By Amy Sondova “Beating My Heart” the first single from Jon McLaughlin’s sophomore album OK, N

By Amy Sondova “Beating My Heart” the first single from Jon McLaughlin’s sophomore album OK, Now (Island/Def Jam) has been making waves on the radio (both figuratively and literally) for weeks. Produced by Jon Fields (Switchfoot, Jonas Brothers), the album has a soulful, bluesy pop-rock inspired by the likes of Billy Joel, Elton John, and perhaps even John Mayer (though Jon is resistant to compare himself to his peers). Jon was kind enough to “Take 5 + 2” with Backseat Writer on the precipice of his album release, which was this Tuesday, Oct. 7.

You're a Christian who's also a musician, but you find the whole division between secular and Christian music a bit nonsensical. Why do you think it's not always beneficial to listeners to throw music into these categories?

I think the categories prevent people from listening to good music. There's a lot of good music out there and there's some bad music, too (I have written my share) - the problem is that when I get put into a category of "Christian" music or "secular" music, or whatever, my music takes on all the stereotypes that that genre brings with it. So whatever a particular person feels about "Christian" music, good or bad, they're going to put some of that on my music before even hearing it. And there are people out there who won't listen to "Christian" music simply because it's in that genre, and there are those who won't listen to "secular" music for the same reason.

So, you're that cute singer who belts out "So Close" in the movie Enchanted. Being a fan of Disney ballads, what was it like to perform one written by Academy Award winnining composer Alan Menken, who wrote songs for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast? (Psst! Tell us a little bit about being on the set with Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams, and the rest of the cast!)

I can't even tell you what an honor it is to be associated with names like Disney, Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz... it's ridiculous! Being on the set of the movie was really fun - I felt a bit out of my league working with Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel. They were all the nicest people and it was cool to get a glimpse of what their lives are like working late nights on the set and putting in such long hours.

After your appearance in Enchanted, sales of your first album on Island/Def Jam soared, causing many people to cling to your heart-wrenching song, "Beautiful Disaster." What inspired the writing of this song?

The great thing about “Beautiful Disaster” is that it's relatable. That's also the unfortunate thing about the song. Everyone has a weird, warped image of themselves on some level and this song doesn't really offer a solution to the problem (although I wish it did) but it at least lets people know that everyone's in the same boat.

Similarly, on your new album (which is amazing) you composed the lyrically-driven song "4 Years" which encourages kids to just be themselves. Why did you write this song?

"4 Years" is a song I've been wanting to write for a long time. Ever since I graduated from high school. I just wanted to write a song that would remind high school kids that high school is not the rest of your life...and that every decision in high school is NOT life or death. When you're 15 it's hard to see past graduation day and part of you feels like the world you're in while you're in high school will be for the rest of your life - but it's not true....it's just 4 years.

Ok, Now's first song "Beating My Heart" was actually written "on the spot." Can you regale me with the story?

Well, it had been over a year since I finished Indiana and I was experiencing a little writer's block but it was beyond time for me to start writing songs for the new record. So I was wracking my brain but nothing was coming. So one day, the band and I were at a sound check and Chad, my drummer, asked me to play some of the new material I had been working on. I didn't have anything written but I didn't want to admit to the band that I was having writer's block so I said I had this new song, it's not quite finished, but here it is...and that's what came out.

I'm gonna make this a "Take 5" +2 because I have to ask a Billy Joel question because you're such a big admirer of his work. If you were asked to perform a song on a Billy Joel tribute album, what song would you pick and why?

I would do ANY Billy Joel song because they're all awesome...but if I had to pick one I would probably pick "New York State of Mind" - I just love that song. Everything about it.

Since you're "the movie song guy," which song from Ok, Now is predicted to be the next "movie song"? I'm thinking “We All Need Saving," but what's your take?

I think you're right. There's just something about "We All Need Saving" that feels like film. It just feels like it should be synced up to that one scene in that one movie.

Slow down, you crazy child
you're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, tell me
Why are you still so afraid?

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do and
Only so many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told..
That you can get what you want or you get old
You're gonna kick off before you even
Get halfway through
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

Slow down, you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight
Tonight,...
Too bad but it's the life you lead
you're so ahead of yourself that you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong, you know
You can't always see when you're right. you're right

You've got your passion, you've got your pride
but don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

Slow down, you crazy child
and take the phone off the hook and disappear for awhile
it's all right, you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize,..Vienna waits for you?
And you know that when the truth is told
that you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get half through
Why don't you realize,. Vienna waits for you
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you?

As I was driving home the other night from Vermont, I was listening to some Billy Joel. The song Allentown came on, and I could not help but to think how disappointingly appropriate the song is for the current times. Today was a mess.

Well we're living here in...the United States...

Well we're living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they're killing time
Filling out forms
Standing in line.

Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers at the USO
Asked them to dance
Danced with them slow
And we're living here in Allentown.

But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
aaaaaaah aaahhhhh ooooooooh ooooooh ohhhhhhh.

Well we're waiting here in Allentown
For the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave
If we worked hard
If we behaved.

So the graduations hang on the wall
But they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
Iron and coke,
Chromium steel.

And we're waiting here in Allentown.
But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaah.

Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got.
If something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our faaaaaaaace, oh oh oh.

Well I'm living here in Allentown
And it's hard to keep a good man down.
But I won't be getting up todaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy
aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaaaah aaaaaaaaah.

GUITAR SOLO

aaaaaaah aaaaaaah aaaaaaah oh oh oh.

And it's getting very hard to staaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

And we're living here in Allentown.

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently

The celebrities listed below this introduction were chosen because they have either been recently in the news or were run across in my non-scientific Internet search. A short explanation is given about some of their comments or actions in favor of Obama but please take it with a large grain of salt as it is in no way complete. In case someone asks, of course there are a small number of stars that support the John McCain / Sarah Palin ticket like Sylvester Stallone, John Voight, Ted Nugent and Charlie Daniels.

It is no secret that most Hollywood and music stars are liberals and have become a reliable source of campaign cash for Democratic candidates. So far the music and entertainment industry has given around $ 15 million to the Obama presidential effort and donated $ 3.4 million to the Hillary Clinton campaign. How did John McCain fare you ask? His campaign has received around $1 million.

Not included are many rap and hip-hop stars like 50 Cent, Chamillionare, Scarface, etc., because around 95% of their community supports Obama’s candidacy. To list them all would take forever. They support Obama by using clothes with Obama’s image on them on stage, by putting up Obama or Obama/Biden banners at their concerts, etc. Almost all speak favorably of the candidate and hope the more outspoken members of their community tone down their support for fear of alienating voters that do not understand what their music is about. Some artists have said they support and will vote for Obama because he is one of them. Others say he is the most qualified for the job with race having nothing to do with their decision. To say that they are excited about this election is an understatement!

Below the stars, more or less in alphabetical order, listed by their last name. Looking for Oprah? She’s under W for Winfrey. How about Jay-Z? He’s under C for Shawn Carter. Homer Simpson? Try S for Homer Simpson. Yes, even Homer tries to vote for Obama.

Enjoy. Or not.

In July 2008 the Obama campaign has distanced themselves from Ludacris because of his song “Politics: Obama is Here” that contains some controversial material the campaign said was outrageously offensive, something akin to: President Bush is mentally handicapped, Vice President Cheney belongs in a wheel chair paralyzed, an Obama presidency is destiny, criticized Reverend Jessie Jackson, and called Hillary Clinton a b***h.

The ad poked fun at Obama because of his comments to tune up cars and inflate their tires to make the US independent of foreign oil. Browne has been a liberal all his life and thought that if his music was used in Republican ads the public might think he endorses McCain. Since 2004 he has contributed at least $ 4,300 to Obama’s coffers. After the lawsuit was filed the ORp pulled the ad. Browne is asking for around $75,000 in damages. September 22, 2008 his song "Looking East" forms part of the album "Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement" the Obama/Biden campaign is selling over the Internet for $ 24.99.

Shawn Carter (Jay-Z): March 3, 2008 an audio only voice recording made by the rapper is put out asking voters to vote for Obama on the Mar 4 Ohio Democratic primaries. The rapper has said he supports Obama for president. April 2008 after the ABC debate with Hillary Clinton, in a speech a few days later, Obama used the the motion of brushing dirt off his shoulder to make a point. Most people outside of the hip-hop community missed the significance of the gesture but it quickly became controversial. In a mater of days after the controversy that a presidential candidate for the first time ever used hip-hop inspired gestures during a speech had reached a crescendo, it was learned that the gesture could be related to a song by Jay-Z called “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”. The gesture meant shaking those that hate you off or getting rid of negative energy. Obama and his campaign have said that in his iPod Obama has songs by Jay-Z….
Oprah Winfrey: On September 5, 2008 the Drudge Report said that the show is receiving a lot of emails asking that Sarah Palin be on. Half of the staff really wants Palin to appear but that Oprah and a couple of her people do not because it might hurt Obama. In 2007 continues the Drudge Report, conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was not allowed to go on when he was promoting his book. Later on September 5, 2008 Oprah stated to TMZ that she would love to have Palin on, after the election, as the staff had not discussed the Palin appearance and she had made the decision not have her show become a platform for candidates. Oprah has said about Obama: That would be my favorite guy, ….I know him well enough to believe in his moral authority. And that is the number one reason why I am supporting him, ..my Senator, my favorite Senator, and my choice. He appeared twice on Oprah, in January 2005 and October 2006, before she gave him her formal endorsement. On September 25, 2006 Oprah, on Larry King Live, said she hoped Obama ran for President. May 2007 Oprah formally endorses Obama for President. September 8, 2007 Oprah hosted an Obama fundraiser for 1,500 guests, each one donating $ 2,300 to his campaign. From November 2007 to February 2008 Oprah campaigned with Obama in Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire and in California. Many opine it was Oprah that introduced Obama to white American women and because of her active support suffered a huge backlash that continues to these days. August 2008 she was at the DNC in Denver praising Obama’s acceptance speech. September 2008 two University of Maryland economists say Oprah’s endorsement has given Obama approximately 1 million votes he would not have gotten otherwise. September 2008 she asked her viewers to support Senate bill 1738 proposed by Senator Joe Biden and endorsed by Senator Barack Obama. September 2008 Oprah again said her staff had not brought up having Sarah Palin on her show but would like to have her on after the election. She has donated at least $ 2,300 to the Obama campaign.

"Vienna" by Billy Joel

Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
Are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right(you're right)

You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize
Vienna waits for you

Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while
It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you.

And you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through

Why don't you realize...Vienna waits for you
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

If you search for tenderness
it isn't hard to find.
You can have the love you need to live.
But if you search for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind.
It always seems to be so hard to give.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.

I can always find someone
to say they sympathize.
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve.
But I don't want some pretty face
to tell me pretty lies.
All I want is someone to believe.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.

I can find a lover.
I can find a friend.
I can have security until the bitter end.
Anyone can comfort me
with promises again.
I know, I know.

When I'm deep inside of me
don't be too concerned.
I won't asｋ for nothin' while I'm gone.
But when I want sincerity
tell me where else can I turn.
Because you're the one that I depend upon.

Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be

He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Came across an interesting piece in the New York Times today. I was going to blog about the Palin-

Came across an interesting piece in the New York Times today. I was going to blog about the Palin-Biden debate but I decided not to after perusing this article, entitled "If Only the Cool Kids Could See Him Now" by Bruce Weber. The tagline on the NYT homepage was this: "Adolescent anxiety is the subject of Jason Robert Brown’s new musical." This line piqued my interest because cultural adolescence is a current field of personal interest.

Think about these sections from the article in light of our culture's obsession with adolescence: "Mr. Brown wrote the music and lyrics for “13,” working with Dan Elish and Robert Horn, who wrote the book. His score is full of hormonally fueled rock songs and melodic, Billy Joel-esque ballads about early-teenage concerns like the meaning of friendship, the cliquish strata of junior high school and the terrors of French kissing, but it is especially notable for its focus on the burning earnestness of youthful feelings.

“It’s the same angst that comes out in all my stuff,” Mr. Brown said. “I’ve never been particularly good at explaining or even understanding what this sort of rage is that is so accessible to me. I’m not an out-of-control person, but I can access in my work very easily a feeling of real fury. Thank goodness I’ve channeled it into my work, I guess.”

This piece might not seem all that interesting or important from the outset. If you look deeper, though, it's pretty telling. Here's a 38-year-old man, twice married, who despite being almost 40 years of age is still exploring the themes of what are typically called the teenage years. This is culturally significant. It's also quite pervasive in the current day. It's quite common for men and women in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s to think and live in the patterns and rhythms of adolescence. Despite being decades removed from prom and physics class, many adults today devote great amounts of attention and interest to the things of youth. Jason Robert Brown is one such example from the artistic community, a 38-year-old man who devotes considerable time, energy and money to the parsing of the teenage years.

Can we say that it's fine to reminisce once in a while about the last year or the first crush, the big game or the little insecurities? I think we can. It's all part of being human, this work to remember and even savor the past. But should we live in the world of teens while still adults? Is that a healthy thing? Should we obsess over high school football or basketball, or watch typically teenage-themed shows, or dress in teen fashions as adults? These things I'm less sure about. There's always some cultural overlap between the generations, but I wonder if things haven't gone overboard for many adults.

It seems to me that one decides which world to focus on: the world of adults or the world of teens. If one focuses on maturity, and personal growth, and fighting weaknesses, and conforming in healthy ways to a responsible adult lifestyle, then one will look and talk and act like an adult. If, however, an adult focuses on personal fulfillment, and self-interest, and the unfettered expression of one's thoughts and inclinations, such that one acts much like a grown-up child, then--surprise!--one will look the same.

It seems a unique part of Christian discipleship today that we need not only to clarify for adults how to live as a Christian, but how to live as an adult, and more than this, a Christian adult. We can't let social concerns overwhelm theological ones, of course, but neither can we ignore fundamental matters of maturity. While the world around is entranced with adolescence and shrugging off age-old norms of adulthood, namely, the cultivation of character, the assumption of serious responsibility, and the development of social maturity such that one behaves with dignity and propriety, we should teach these things. Though it lives in all of us in some form, immaturity gets old and tiring. Just think of how long it's taking Jim and Pam to marry on "The Office." Honestly, how much longer can that relationship stretch out? Time for art to learn from life, Christian life at that, and not vice versa, as seems to happen all too often in our churches and homes. Time for the gospel to transform not simply theology, but behavior.

For some strange reason, I always end up asking that question when playing The Question Game. It a.l.w.a.y.s. happens. I do not know why.

So, on to bigger and better things...

In the tradition of things: how was my day?

Great. I think I finally have a favorite song, which is also great. People always ask me what my favorite song is, and I never have an answer. Then I say I like pretty much all music, which is a lie except I do not know how to describe the music I like, and then... a whole great big mess, basically. So, it is very good that I have a favorite song now. It is Happy Jack by The Who, in case you were wondering. I really, really like it, even though I have probably heard it less than a dozen times. And even though I could never understand what they were saying until just now, when I looked up the lyrics. Still, I love it very much, better than all other songs, therefore it is of course my favorite.

Now that that is settled...

I am starting a sort of project. It is so research/ learn a bit about each of the people/places/things/whatever mentioned in Billy Joel's We Didn't Start The Fire. I love that song. It is very nearly a close second in my favorite songs of all time.

Additionally, though separate, I am going to use Wikipedia's Random Article feature at least a half dozen times each day. Even though teachers always say it is not accurate, I will always believe in it.

That is all I have to say. I might post again later, depending, naturally, on whether I have something more to say.

Goodbye, fellow humans.

Good day.

So much for grassroots, average people. I realize both campaigns have to get their loads of money from the money bags who must buy whichever guy wins the White House -- hey, that's how the system works -- but really: I thought Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, despite their big bucks, were for the working class, the underdog, the common, average working Joe, Joeanne, Julio, Juanita, and Jones. Alas! Their joint concert benefiting Barack Obama will cost between $500 and $10,000 per ticket.
Ah, well: Barack was, after all, "Born to Run" -- and if he wins, it'll be fun to corner Sarah "I See Russian People" Palin and "Tell Her About It." If we just continue "Keeping the Faith" we might avoid getting too "Close to the Borderline". Just throw away any idea you had, however, of owning a "Pink Cadillac".
Hmmm, I could really have fun with this; but I have to go get ready for my job that doesn't pay enough to buy the next President and make him do my personal and financial bidding. Who knew that BS and a BJ cost so much these days?
