Masa Depan Haiku

1. Karena mewarisi tradisi Beos yang berbasis Multi media, Haiku punya peluang untuk bersaing di kelas Desktop rumahan sebagai tools yang hebat (khususnya untuk programmer Multimedia), kelihatannya Haiku  akan kesulitan di kelas Desktop Umum sebagai OS primer

The woman, Aditi Sharma, was accused of killing her former fiancé, Udit Bharati. They were living in Pune when Sharma met another man and eloped with him to Delhi. Later Sharma returned to Pune and, according to prosecutors, asked Bharati to meet her at a McDonald's. She was accused of poisoning him with arsenic-laced food.

Sharma, 24, agreed to take a [Brain Electrical Oscillations Signature test, or] BEOS test in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. (Suspects may be tested only with their consent, but forensic investigators say many agree because they assume it will spare them an aggressive police interrogation.)

Unlike Halperin's fictional device, the jury is out (pardon the pun) regarding whether the BEOS test is infallible. Still, we're entering a realm that is filled with moral and ethical dilemmas.

VICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator) ist ein Quelloffener Emulator für Commodore Computer und basiert auf X64, einem früheren C64 Emulator unter dem "X Windows System". Zur Zeit arbeitet ein australischer Entwickler daran, VICE zu iC64 zu konvertieren. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Version des Emulators für das iPhone. Mitte Juli hatte er sich bei dem Entwicklerprogramm von Apple angemeldet, das bedeutet, die Software wird mit dem offiziellen SDK für das iPhone geschrieben. Falls Apple die Software für das iPhone frei geben wird, könnte der iPhone Nutzer unzählige Spiele kostenlos und legal aus dem internet herunter laden und Apple selbst würde daran keinen Cent verdienen. So würde der Retro-Spielespaß auf dem iPhone einzug erhalten. Die Reakion von Apple ist also fragwürdig.

Im Rahmen eines Sale and Leaseback Geschäfts erwirbt die BEOS GmbH das Firmengelände der Mahle GmbH in Alzenau, Kreis Aschaffenburg für eine internationale Investorengruppe. Die Vermittlung erfolgte durch die FIBG Frankfurter Immobilienberatungsgesellschaft mbH. Finanziert wird das Investment von der Hessischen Landesbank.

Das 117.000 Quadratmeter große Grundstück in Alzenau Nord verfügt über 40.000 Quadratmeter vermietbare Bestandsgebäude für Produktion-, Lager- und Büronutzungen. Das Gebäudeensemble ist seit den 50er Jahren gewachsen und verfügt noch über umfangreiche Reserveflächen für Neubebauungen. Der internationale Motorenzulieferer und ehemalige Eigentümer, die Mahle GmbH, hat mit einem 10 Jahres Mietvertrag und mehrfachen Verlängerungsoptionen ihr langfristiges Interesse an diesem Standort zum Ausdruck gebracht und dokumentiert.

BEOS wird zunächst in die Sanierung und Modernisierung einer Multifunktionshalle mit 16.000 Quadratmeter Mietfläche umfangreich investieren, die ab Frühjahr 2009 für Lager-, Logistik- oder Produktionsnutzungen zur Verfügung stehen wird.

Darüber hinaus beabsichtigt BEOS, an diesem infrastrukturell etablierten und nachfragestarken High-Tech Gewerbestandort mit ihren über 50.000 Quadratmeter großen Reservefreiflächen weitere mittelgroße Nutzer langfristig zu binden.

Zwei parallele Akquisitionen der BEOS GmbH im Rhein-Main Gebiet befinden sich in der Endverhandlungsphase.

It is no secret that us OSNews editors - Eugenia and I, mostly - have fond memories of the BeOS. So, whenever a handy BeOS feature makes its way into other operating systems, I zealously point it out in the articles or comments I write about them. Call it a harmless little compulsion. Anyway, a few days ago, while hanging around in Haiku's irc channel, a link to a screenshot showed an interesting little piece of BeOS legacy which had found its way to Windows.

A very popular BeOS application - or, more correctly, replicant - was ProcessController, a little tool written by Georges-Edouard Berenger. ProcessController lived inside your taskbar or any other replicant-friendly application, and showed memory and processor usage live, in real-time. That wasn't all, though, as it allowed you to perform all sorts of neat little tricks:

Quit any application that is running (both background and non-background BApplications),Screen the Memory usage of the different teams/applications,Screen the activity of each individual team & thread graphically and "Live",Kill any team,Change the priority of any thread,Kill any thread,Start the debugger on a thread, with an intelligent semaphore releasing mecanism,Turn on & off processors,Launch a terminal,Re-launch the Tracker (available if it is not running anymore),Re-launch the Deskbar (available if it is not running anymore),Access the documentation, adopt Pulse's colors, install/remove in/from the Deskbar.

ProcessController came in very handy when playing around with beta or alpha software, as it allowed you to easily kill threads and applications without having to resort to task managers or cli commands. In addition, if you experienced sluggish performance, you could easily check via ProcessController which application or process was the culprit.

As it turns out, ProcessController has found its way to Windows, thanks to k23 productions. The tool works on Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003, but I'm using it on Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, and it seems to work just fine. Especially the ability to show every process' memory and CPU usage in a separate window can be really useful in determining when a certain application chokes. The tool shows an awful lot of information, all of which might be useful in a troubleshooting scenario.

The tool even uses BeOS icons and graphics, which only add to the authenticity of the experience. If you spend a lot of time in Windows, this GPL-licensed tool can be a real time-saver.

El libro se llama "En el principio... fue la línea de comandos", lo ha escrito Neal Stephenson y trata, fundamentalmente de las diferencias filosóficas y funcionales sobre distintos sistemas operativos y modelos de negocio con respecto a éstos desde sus inicios hasta casi la actualidad.

Da una perspectiva interesante de los sistemas operativos, ayuda a entender todo lo relacionado con ellos, con Microsoft, Apple, BeOS y la filosofía GNU/Linux.

Una lectura imprescindible para los informáticos e interesante para los ignorantes de la materia

Optimizat pentru multimedia, BeOS a profitat pe deplin de sistemele multiprocesor folosind latime de banda modulara pentru I/O, pervasive multithreading, multitasking preemptiv si un sistem de fisiere jurnalizat pe 64 de biti numit BFS. Interfata BeOS a fost dezvoltata pe principiile claritatii si al unui design curat si aerisit. Sistemul a fost scris in C++ pentru usurinta programarii, este compatibil POSIX si are o interfata linie de comanda prin bash, desi intern nu este o clona de Unix. (sursa: Wikipedia)

Din experienta mea cu BeOS pot sa va spun ca este un sistem de operare deosebit de rapid si de bine proiectat. Nu este multi-user (adica e ca si cele mai multe sisteme Windows 9x). Spre deosebire de Windows, este mult mai rapid. Pe un K6-2 la 333MHz si 256MB, in 15 secunde de la pornire puteam sa dau click pe desktop si sa pornesc programe. Pe acelasi computer, Windows 98 necesita 63 de secunde.

M-am straduit sa il fac sa il fac sa raspunda mai greu la comenzi, sa il incarca pana il incetinesc. Degeaba! Am pornit toate programele instalate, de doua ori fiecare, am pornit 4 programe care faceau 3D rendering, dar fara rezultat.

Firma producatoare a dat faliment si toate drepturile asupa BeOS au fost cumparate de Palm. Acum BeOS este dezvoltat de voluntari si poate fi descarcat de la BeBits.

OpenBSD - SO pentru servere, cu accent pe securitate; de fapt, cel mai sigur sistem de operare (in instalarea implicita)

NetBSD - daca ai un computer pentru care nu gasesti sistem de operare, ai mari sanse ca NetBSD sa ruleze pe el

QNX - SO real-time

P.S. Am uitat sa mentionez MacOS - sistemul de operare al computerelor Macintosh (Mac). Este bazat pe FreeBSD, dar dezvoltat de Apple si interfata folosita (numita Aqua) este unica. Este cea mai usor de folosit interfata grafica; prin "cea mai usor de folosit" inteleg ca un utilizator care nu a mai folosit niciodata un Mac are nevoie de mai putin timp pentru a indeplini sarcinile pe care le are decat un alt utilizator care foloseste un alt sistem de operare.

A día de hoy no es más que una versión de Ubuntu arregalada para paracerse a BeOS pero que con el tiempo en teoría debería tener una capa que de soporte a las aplicaciones nativas para BeOS y Haiku.

Haiku:

El haiku tradicional consta de 17 moras (unidad lingüística de menor rango que la sílaba) dispuestas en tres versos de 5, 7 y 5 moras, sin rima. Suele contener una palabra clave denominada kigo que indica la estación del año a la que se refiere.

Tradicionalmente el haiku, buscaba describir los fenómenos naturales o el cambio de las estaciones. Muy influido por la filosofía y la estética del zen, su estilo se caracteriza por la naturalidad, la sencillez (no el simplismo), la sutileza, la austeridad, la aparente asimetría que sugiere a la libertad y con ésta a la eternidad.

Haiku OS

Senryū:

Senryū es una forma corta de poesía Japonesa similar al haiku en su construcción: 17 moras dispuestas en tres versos de 5, 7 y 5 moras. Pero el Senryū no contiene kigo (referencia a la estación del año para la que está escrito), ni trata sobre temas de la naturaleza o las estaciones, sino que se centra en la existencia humana, incluyendo a menudo humor negro y cinismo sobre las miserias mundanas, este toque de humos tampoco está presente en el haiku.

Sí, se que me he puesto un poco pesado pero al que no le guste que no lo lea. Hay otra versión más a tener en cuenta entre los herederos de BeOS, además de los que ya mencioné.

En realidad este heredero ha sido forzado. La historia es que la web haikuware.com preparaba semanalmente una copia de pruebas de HaikuOS con una serie de extras. Resulta que esa versión no cumplía una serie de cláusulas de la licencia de Haiku (en OSNews lo explican más extensamente aunque en inglés), y aprovechando que es software libre han decidido hacer su propia versión a la que han denominado Haicoo, y a la que han vuelto ha cambiarle el nombre a Senryu, supongo que también por problemas de licencia .

De la denominada Haicoo solo lanzaron la centrada en el desarrollo de software, pero dejaron sin lanzar otra centrada en usuarios normales.

Como ya he dicho, llego tarde, ya que le han cambiado de nuevo el nombre ¿más problemas de licencia? Y ahora resulta que se llama Senryu, además ya están disponibles las versiones personal y de desarrollo.

No sé si finalmente llegarán a algún lado con tantos cambios de dirección, y si la cosa solo queda en una copia estética de BeOS, me parece una meta muy pobre para un proyecto, y es que para distribuciones de Linux ya hay más que de sobra.

En primer lugar no voy a entrar en detalles, pero resumiendo mucho, BeOS es otro sistema operativo, como Windows, Linux o MacOSX, que se dejó de comercializar allá por el año 2001 [BeOS en wikipedia]. Si alguien quiere probarlo en un PC antiguo (sobretodo por que no tiene drivers para los nuevos), lo puede descargar ya que es gratuito de BeBits.

A pesar de haber fracasado, el sistema había gustado a unos cuantos entusiastas y surgieron varios proyectos para tratar de mantenerlo vivo, como: OpenBeOS, YellowTab y Zeta.

De estos, a día de hoy en 2008 los que más prometen como continuación son HaikuOS, que es el nuevo nombre de OpenBeOS. Es un sustituto real y completo de BeOS, nada de emulación ni capas de compatibilidad, ni nada de eso. Ha entrado en fase pre-alfa 1, o sea, que ya mismo hay un CD para probarlo de verdad. Si quieres saber que tal va lo que se puede probar por ahora, puedes leer la revisión que hicieron en arstechnica en inglés o su traducción parcial en the Inquirer. En Tod-OS puedes seguir las noticias que publican sobre HaikuOS.

El otro hijo en discordia de BeOS es el bastardo, Zebuntu [la web está en alemán] una versión de Ubuntu (si, otra versión) con XFCE y look a lo BeOS, pero que no es compatible con éste, y que en caso de serlo en breve, será usando una capa de emulación denominada B.E.O.S.(BlueEyedOS). El padre de este engendro es Bern Korz, que estaba en otros intentos anteriores de resucitar BeOS [noticia en inglés y en español] ya mencionados (YellowTab, Zeta y B.E.O.S. que va a volver a usar). En teoría, quieren tener un sistema que funcione con base en Linux y después de hacerlo andar, añadirle la compatibilidad con BeOS, para en un futuro migrar o colaborar con su trabajo al auténtico sucesor de BeOS, o sea, HaikuOS. En Tod-OS también puedes seguir las noticias que publican sobre Zeta | Zebuntu.

Esperemos que de todo esto, salga algo interesante, ya que si bien tres son multitud (Windows, Linux y MacOSX), siempre viene bien tener una alternativa para casos especiales, sobretodo si nos permite aprovechar un equipo antiguo o con recursos limitados, y como bien apuntan en el artículo de arstechnica ¿No sería ideal un sistema operativo como HaikuOS para el Asus EeePC?

We take the BS out of BeOS :D

The first I encountered was gmail's new "custom time" feature; unfortunately, this one was broken in text browser (lynx) when I first looked (tip of the day if you think gmail loads too slowly in your browser: enable imap and use your email client or use a text browser like elinks or lynx). This feature means never having to offer belated wishes for a happy birthday, anniversary, or anything else. Could come in really handy on deadline projects, too.

The second was before I fired up Firefox so I'm going to have to go watch Shawn Powers' announcement that Linux Journal is going to include a lot more BeOS coverage and the Pentium Pro technology that makes BeOS shine.

I just looked at the LJ site in Firefox and the graphics are worth the visit today.

The "apple sucks" category is because Apple chose NeXT over BeOS for what became OSX. I'm not saying BeOS was inherently better, but rather Apple has given Unix a bad name.

Txarly acertó que era una broma mía del April fool's ese, no es que me gusten mucho las modas americanas tipo Halloween y eso, pero es que esta me tocaba mi corazoncito BeOS.
