u kunt met ons alle kanten op. Zo slepen wij u mee in verhalen over storm en bijlen, een andere keer verhalen wij van parfum of aardolie. Gisteren brachten wij u aan het huilen, zo bleek. Op 3vandaag@live.nl ontvingen wij zakken vol post hierover. Soms Boos, soms oprecht verdrietig, soms zelfs in regelrechte staat van paniek schreef u ons.

Folks tend to flock towards the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, The Zombies' Odyssey and Oracle, Love's Forever Changes and the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society due to history anointing them as the touchstones of late 60s psych-pop. However, this era was rife with albums that fell just short of the brilliance of these classics. This was such a fertile period for the genre and bands like the Hollies, Bee Gees, Sagittarius, Flaming Groovies recorded great works that are somewhat forgotten in the glow of these anointed favorites. One of my favorit also-rans from this period is Billy Nicholls' Would You Believe as it borrows bits and pieces from the big three, but it buries its melancholy sentiments beneath uplifting harmonies, carefully orchestrated arrangement and the occassional bluster of a raucous riff.

Nicholls' songs are great on their own, but much credit must be paid to the influence of Andrew Loog Oldham, producer of the Rolling Stones, manager of the Small Faces and head of the Immediate label. He is responsible for the lush backing of Would You Believe's most memorable songs. In fact, his production works so well because the incessant positivity of these arrangements conflicts with some depressing sentiments. I've always been a sucker for sour notes dolled up in fancy clothing, so I tend to favor the tunes where Billy smiles to hide the tears.What is even more amazing is that much of the album was created while he was 16 years old and that the Small Faces provide backup on some of the tracks. Supposedly, Oldham viewed Nicholls' as a potential cash cow that he could mold into a British Brian Wilson to serve as a bookend to Mick Jagger, but it didn't quite work out that way.

Anyone who can pen such a slice of sunshine like "Life is Short" is ok with me. The entire song revolves around a innocent obsession where the "ba-ba-ba's" mask the desperation of a young man obsessed with a woman who won't give him the day. He gets so caught up in the fact that life is transient and get so worked up about the pursuit that I almost want to chase behind that waggish scamp. His romanticism constantly gets the better of him and the result is a song like "It Brings me Down" which documents his angst in sublime fashion as piano, guitar, harpsichord and drums collide in a fruity manner that celebrates the orchestral excess of the time period. Plus, the instrumental coda at the end of this song is a perfect way to go out as it backwards tracks its way to Beatledom.

Nicholls became disilluisioned with the album's lack of success, broke with Oldham and recorded a couple solo albums that I'd love to hear. It is a shame because the optimistic moments hint at a bright future that was never fulfilled.

Unfortunately I cannot take complete credit for the actual mixing as it includes mashups of several tracks that I have just segued together. It's not as easy as it sounds however but I think it works pretty well.

I could not find a decent image to post of the cover- however if you look closely, there's some tikki type action on right side - Pushead - like drawings on the left.  The album cover was designed by Klaus Voormann. It's a beauty,  and I don't have scanner at home.   Either way- HappyParts posted this tune a while back - I think I used a you-tube clip or somethin'.  But since I went true Mp3 blog a while back - I'm a true believer. Sgt. Pepper's came out the same year, so leave those thoughts behind. The low-fi, yet sweeping arrangements have built careers for others - Some might say.

I was driving home tonight, listening to an interesting new record, and it reminded me of this album - where every song takes a different turn through pop, rock, psychedelic, and R&B - I dig records that tap in and keep me guessing.  This early Bee Gee's tune really strikes a chord with HappyParts - it wanders up a symphonic staircase with a monk choir chaser- never ending really- such as my worries.  The brothers Gibb (+2)  sing "Don't walk so tall, Before you crawl," 'An ominous warning', for this west coast record guy.

So finally I googled it and watched several snappy concert videos of the Bee Gees performing it on YouTube, plus part of a sad, black-and-white, homeless-themed version, plus a happy, enjoyable, long clip from a '70s variety show in which Olivia Newton-John, Andy Gibb and ABBA performed a medley of their music. Quite cool. Then I came home and bought "Nights on Broadway" from iTunes, as well as one of the few songs that might be able to get it out of my head, "Dancin' Queen." (This wonderful "Nights on Broadway" concert performance is my favorite YouTube video so far, even more than LisaNova’s Sarah Palin spoofs.)

I just didn't appreciate ABBA and the Bee Gees as I should have at the time, hung up as I was on the already broken-up Beatles. No one could be as good as the Beatles, whose reunion I was awaiting like Linus in the pumpkin patch. And I was the right age to like these people, too.

Enjoy the tunes, and don't think too much about the fact that a couple of these guys are no longer around. (I Wikipedia'd that, figuring out which Bee Gee had departed (Maurice), in addition to young brother Andy.) Also, disregard the stalkerish lyrics. Now, I'll be generous with you, as they say you can get a song out of your head by sharing it with someone.

P.S. Know what I like about ABBA, besides the music? These girls dance like I do, which is not particularly deftly at all: shift to left leg, shift to right leg, and back to the left leg, and swing the arms a little, and kick -- little kicks -- and kick, and maybe a moment of what Billy Crystal's Harry character termed "the white man's overbite." Better than Elaine's dance, maybe, not by much, though. This makes Agnetha and Frida heroines of the spirit, in a fashion.

Nie wiem. Może to kwestia innej szerokości geograficznej, może wychowania w innej kulturze muzycznej. Albo co innego. Fakt faktem, że wg zachodnich mediów płyta nowojorskiego kwartetu, to ścisła tegoroczna czołówka. Wg rodzimych już tak niekoniecznie.

Artyści tacy jak Donna Summer czy Bee Gees nie są elementem audialnej edukacji przeciętnego Polaka. Pewnie stąd bierze się taka różnica w ocenach HaLA (prawda, że dobry skrót?) między NAMI, a NIMI. Tylko czy „oni" nie mają trochę racji? Przyjrzyjmy się bliżej.

Na swoim długogrającym debiucie Hercules and Love Affair zapraszają nas do królestwa stroboskopów, tęczowych parkietów, dymu i srebrnych kul disco. Muzycy już na początku odkrywają najmocniejsze argumenty na odcinku „Time Will" - „Blind". Opener stanowi mieszankę smacznego bitu, tanecznej nostalgii i wokalnego popisu Antony'ego Hegarty'ego (tak, właśnie TEGO), choć to dopiero w „Blind" wspina się on na wyżyny swoich umiejętności. Skoro już jesteśmy przy tym artyście, to każdy, kto słyszał go ten wie, jak to jest z jego manierą wokalną i barwą głosu. Albo kupujemy, albo zgrzytamy zębami.

Następny w zestawie, czyli „Hercules Theme", to najmocniejszy punkt płyty. Żaden inny numer na tym LP nie ma tak naturalnego feelingu, takiej lekkości i pozytywnej wibracji w stanie czystym od pierwszej do ostatniej sekundy utworu. Te smyki wyjęte żywcem z epoki disco, te przeciągłe zaśpiewy, groove, funkujące trąbki (przede wszystkim funkujące trąbki), detale typu delikatne trącenia talerzy w końcówce, ach och. W „Hercules Theme" spotykam mojego nieistniejącego brata bliźniaka z pokaźnym afro na głowie, świecącej kamizelce i żółtych dzwonach. Polecam, polecam, polecam.

Dużo dobrego dzieje się w „You Belong" i następującej po niej „Athene", ale bardziej w warstwie muzycznej, niż wokalnej. Możemy sobie jedynie wyobrazić, jakim „killerem" byłby ten drugi numer, gdyby tylko podbić go bardziej energetycznym śpiewem (bo bit jest wymarzony). Pod numerem piątym znalazł się pierwszy singiel, rzecz, dla której wielu straciło głowę, czyli „Blind". Z początku nie rozumiałem głosów zachwytu, z czasem jednak doceniłem ekwilibrystykę wokalną Antony'ego, co zaś tyczy się dźwięków, to jest całkiem ok, tylko czemu w wideoklipie (a i pewnie w ogóle na singlu) nie ma tej mocarnej końcówki? Pewnie to przez te 6:18 utworu, na którym mógłby się właściwie skończyć ten album. Ciśnienie spada, ekspres wyhamowuje. Beznamiętnie mijamy kolejne muzyczne krajobrazy („Iris", „Easy"), coś tam zaczyna się dziać na horyzoncie przy „This Is My Love", figlarnym „Raise Me Up", ale tak naprawdę, to dopiero w rozbujanym, rozśpiewanym closerze „True False / Fake Real" wracamy na odpowiednie tory.

Gdyby ograniczyć debiut HaLA do 6 najmocniejszych utworów, znalazłoby się pewnie więcej osób przybijających piątkę DFA Records za ten album, jednak „jaki koń jest każdy widzi". Tymczasem po listopadowych koncertach Hercules and Love Affair w Krakowie i w Warszawie może okazać się, że w żyłach rodaków jednak pulsuje odrobina gorącej, dyskotekowej krwi, ale w tym klasycznym rozumieniu disco i parkietu. Kto wie, nigdy nic nie wiadomo.

I can't say enough for how valuable organized sports is for these girls. She was really nervous before this first game, but as the game progressed, I could see her confidence come back.  The teamwork and comradarie will develop in the next couple of weeks with this first game behind us, and I think these girls are going to be a force to be reckoned with in this league.
Well...you know, that's coming from my personal vantange point...just sayin'.

Later in the day, she was willing to give up her tomboy-ishness but for a while so that she and her friend, Hannah, could do the whole play makeover thing at Libby Lou.  She told the stylist that she wanted to be sporty, so keep the frou-frou to a minimum.  LOL!!!

The girls had so much fun, and I was treated to my first real taste of The Jonas Brothers.  They are no Bee Gees, but I can't help but be a little excited that my girl is into her first teeny-bopper band, and listening to the girls chatting in the back seat of my car was surreal.  Amanda was analyzing the music and Hannah was discussing their style.

I had to try and hide the enormous smile on my face as I was driving the car.

Just in case I haven't mentioned this lately, I love having a girl!

Well, maybe not “on” the show as a guest, but during one particular broadcast of the show when it originated from Cleveland her lovely face made it on the screen for several seconds as the show faded out to a commercial break. She was an audience member. During the early 60’s Mom and other ladies from the neighborhood “coffee clutch” would travel 45 minutes north to Cleveland from Orrville, OH and sit in the audience for the show.

I can vividly recall her going there at least three times and one instance remains etched in my memory because Mom and the other ladies went for a show during the summer and my siblings had to go to my Aunt Lois’ that day. Usually they went when school was in session but that particular week Mike Douglas had a hot new rising superstar of stage and screen on the show as co-host that Mom and her buddies HAD to see.

Who was this diva? Why a very young Barbara Streisand that’s who.

It was 1963.

Mom dropped off my older sister, baby sister and younger brother and myself  (our oldest brother was working that summer) at Aunt Lois’ and off she went. Of course Aunt Lois wanted to watch the show on TV and as we waited for the show to begin later that morning something else significant happened. My baby sister Karen took her first steps! I also recall that day that our older sister Cheryl tried (in vain) to teach my brother and myself how to roller skate on the sidewalk in front of Aunt Lois’ house on East Oak Street. Needless to say that was my first and last lesson in rolling skating and I never attempted that feat again.

Once the show started Aunt Lois hollered for us to come in and watch although we really had no interest in an old guy like Mike Douglas. But when Aunt Lois commanded, you obeyed!

When Douglas would take a commercial break and say “We’ll be right back after this message!” the cameraman would scan across the applauding audience made up of primarily housewives from across northeast Ohio. On one particular break as they scanned the audience the camera settled on Mom for five or more seconds before going to the commercial. Her whole face was splashed across the TV screen and we literally freaked out! Including Aunt Lois! I think she was more shocked and excited than we were.

Mom was excited once she found out she was shown on TV but nearly as excited when she learned Karen took her first steps, although she was a bit disappointed that she missed out on that event.

I have no recollection of who the guests were that day and over the years Mom forgot too, but it was all about this young upcoming star named Streisand that she and her pals were interested in that day.

Douglas came to Cleveland in 1961 to start that show that eventually aired each weekday for 20 years. The show aired on KYW-TV Channel 3 (now known as WKYC) and by August of ’63 had gone into national syndication before moving to Philadelphia in 1965. The show aired live until one time in ’65 when guest Zsa Zsa Gabor uttered an obscenity over the air which resulted in the show being taped from that point on. Douglas’ first show in Philadelphia was August 30, 1965 and I remember when the move was announced Mom was disappointed that she would be unable to attend any more shows.

As a young kid Mike Douglas was considered an old guy and I usually only watched it when I was home sick from school. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how progressive and hip he was in the guests he had on over the years. In addition to the usual bevy of TV and movie stars he wasn’t shy about booking rock 'n roll stars and during the run of the show the highest ratings week he had was the week John & Yoko co-hosted (I skipped school one day that week to catch the Lennon’s and Chuck Berry). I also took a half-day off school to catch KISS on his show.

About 12 years ago VH1 reran the week of John & Yoko shows and I still have them on tape.

During the 60’s and 70’s such rock stars as the Turtles, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Raspberries, Kinks, Supremes, Animals, Bee Gees, James Brown, Blondie, Sam Cooke, Cowsills, Cass Elliott, Peter Frampton, Marvin Gaye, Moby Grape, Chaka Kahn, Elton John, Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Patti Smith, Edgar Winter, Vanilla Fudge and many, many more.

Douglas, born on August 11, 1925, passed away on his birthday in 2006.
