Artist Jim Lee's version of the X-Men is a treasured part of my adolescence. I have to admit that I looked forward to every issue of X-Men he drew and loved his creator owned creation WildC.A.T.S comic as well. It's interesting to note how long his costume redesigns lasted. And whether you like it or not, Psylocke's ninja bikini is now her most classic costume. I'm not sure what that says about the character. Anyway, I thought it might be fun to revisit the time the X-Men were stationed in the Australian outback. I really loved the original outback lineup of Havok, Wolverine, Longshot, Colossus, Rogue, Storm, Dazzler and Psylocke. The balance of male and female teammates appealed to me. Of course, we also had Gateway, Jubilee and Madelyn Pryor. Then a reformed Polaris joined after a very strange power switch (that's why she's so American Gladiator-ish in the pic below) and Banshee and Forge returned as trainers. A lot of stuff was going on on Muir Isle around then. Things were getting crowded again with lots and lots of characters.

Above, Psylocke and Storm look menacing with their energy powers and diva stances. I love this version of Storm's costume sooooo much! I wish she had actually used it in the books. The choker rocks and is reminiscent of her punk era. The side cut looks visually appealing, and her ruby takes center stage to give us some sex appeal (by that I mean some skin). The shoulder pads are a bit 90s but I like them here with the baggy sleeves and cape. It's regal, but superheroic and pin up girl at the same time.

Storm, Forge & Polaris. Storm looks amazing here. Totally gorgeous, regal, and commanding. I've never understood why Forge doesn't cover up his cybernetic leg. Like, what? Does he cut of one of the pants legs every time he get a costume? Hey guys, look! I have an artificial leg! Or maybe he needs access to the materials in his leg to make stuff? I dunno. And Polaris, love that hair, girl! And the muscles! It was nice to see a girl with super strength actually look like she had it.

Jubilee, Havok, Psylocke & Wolverine (in the foreground). Jubilee was great under Jim Lee's pencils. Loved her smart mouth and her bubble gum. She was a great character foil for Wolvie and the ultra cool (as in chilly) Psylocke.

Rogue, Banshee, Gateway (in the background) & Colossus. This is my favorite costume of Rogue's. Actually, I like the one in the 80's where she's wearing the black bodysuit, a green thong and a green tank top with double belts, but this one is close enough. And no one, and I mean, no one draws Banshee's costume with as much flair as Jim Lee. He really knew how to get those stripes to look amazing!
Storm with short hair and in the blue and gold uniform. This haircut didn't last long, but I think it's pretty cool. I'm not, however, a fan of Storm in this outfit. I like the X-Men when they're in the their own individual costumes. Leave the uniforms for the younger kids who haven't reached X-Men status yet.

Did I say that earplugs were working really well - terrific, in fact? Yes. I wasn't expecting a banshee outside my window at 2:15am. That woke me with a start! She, a long-haired brunette trying to wear a shirt-dress of sorts without losing her boobs or her modesty, was outside yelling at two out of three of her companions. One of them was named Brett. I could hear someone yelling up from the intersection of Frimley Park Road and the A30 for Brett. No one answered but they were too interested in surviving the onslaught of the banshee. Her companions were opposites. One was dark haired, very tall, a bean pole, wearing a jumper, a t-shirt and jeans. The second was stockier, shorter, blonde and buzz cut, dressed in white. I didn't see the one yelling up the road at them.

Unfortunately, she woke my husband up and I heard him open the window and tell her to p*** off. As there is no reasoning with a drunk and she was too full of bravado and no common sense, I thought it best to add my voice to the chorus and told her the same. It took telling her I would phone the police if she didn't go for her to wander off after her companions. My hope is she is too hung over or too well used to be back tonight.

Other than the banshee, the earplugs are fantastic! They really help me sleep!

Wish us well, wish us peace, wish us relaxation and wish us a good night's sleep.

Today, inspired by a bit of free time while the washing machine does it's thing I poked at rawhide. Specifically I was interested in why.. once again.. my iPod had stopped working in Banshee. The component responsible for this is Podsleuth, a neat little C# ditty which does all the magic for us.

First roadblock, the new rpm version is stricter with the fuzz so rebasing one patch was required. Then Podseluth needed to be adapted to the new sg3_utils, a simple little patch later and we now compile (many thanks to Dan Horak for pointing out my typo).

Now it still doesn't actually run but the original 2 issues being fixed it now exposes another bug wherein it seems we cannot find HAL on dbus. This I am still trying to figure out but not at all bad for idle poking while I wait for the laundry to finish.

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

sudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main

7. ¡Disfrútalo!

Banshee 1.2 fails.

Why?

Because it can't import my MySQL database for Amarok. I was thinking of going back to it because I wanted a GNOME music player instead of a KDE one. :-/ Plus, it seems to be lighter than Amarok.

Well, it seems to be a bit slower now than it was pre-version 1. Must be the new features and the plugins. :-/

In any case, here's a fantastic MoveOn ad:

$ sudo mtpfs /home/alberto/zen -o allow_other

$ sudo umount /home/alberto/zen

and it's many worn-through holes located in both
the obvious and not-so-obvious locations.

In a noncommittal way I asked through the din,

What's the going rate for this worn-out soul here?

The vendor, busy as he was, for souls were scarce
those days--and he was well-stocked--
wiped his bloody hands across his bloody apron,
gave me a little wink, and said,

A fine soul indeed! For you I'll make a deal.

He made his way to me
through the desperate crowd of customers,
leaned into my ear,
and in a conspiratorial whisper explained,

Unlike most customers these days,
you seem to be one who knows the value of a good soul.
I only sell to those who understand the value of the goods
that they are wanting to buy.
Make me an offer my friend!

I wiped at the desperation on my forehead
and in a nonchalant, divergent tone
asked the busy merchant
how he came to own such a stock
of obviously first rate,
barely used,
souls.

This time he did not wink
and the smile faded when he replied,

Young man, why do you ask such a question?
What are your intentions?
If you were to ask the banshee how she knows
to whom she should express her next mournful keening,
or ask the shaman to lay out before you the path he takes
to the netherworld in quest for the straying and misguided,
would they not be jeopardizing their own industrious ways?
And if I told you the source of my supply
would I, too, not be jeopardizing my own industrious ways?

He grabbed my soul from my hands
and tossed it atop the mussy pile.

Away with you! You shall purchase nothing here!

And nothing could convince the busy merchant
my intentions were pure.

Followed by his flock, he wheeled his business away.

My soul could not be bought.

Empty handed I walked away, returning from
whence I came.

Transferring Songs from iTunes to Banshee

Tutorial Level: Beginner

With the growing popularity of the iPod and iPhone, a large majority of Windows users use Apple's iTunes as their dedicated media player. One of the hard parts of switching from Windows to OpenSUSE is the transfer of data. To solve this problem with music and videos, Gnome's Banshee player has adopted a very functional and useful tool to import music. While many media players can only import a single song at a time, Banshee allows you to transfer folders or even your entire music collection with just a few simple clicks. So now that we know about the feature to transfer songs, let's put it to good use.

Transferring your Music Library

Because iTunes organizes it's library into a single folder, we are able to transfer this entire folder (what we will refer to as the Library) into Banshee with a single import. Most of the time, the iTunes Library can be found in My Music in your Windows Documents, or it may be the My Music folder itself that contains the songs. If you are unsure of where your music for iTunes in located, open iTunes, and go to the Edit tab, and then Preferences. Select the Advanced tab on the top of the new window, and the General section will be selected by default. The first item on this window will be the iTunes Music folder location: this will show you where the current library for your music is located.

Now that we know the location of the folder, we have to import the library. Boot back into OpenSUSE if you are currently in Windows and open your Banshee Media player. Click the Media tab on the top-left of the Banshee player and select Import Media... (or press Ctrl+I). When the prompt appears, click the dropdown menu and select Local Folder. Next, press the Import Media Source button. This will open a window for you to select the location of your media source: in our case, the iTunes Library.

First, we need to get into the Windows folder. To do this, click the File System link in the left column of the locator. Once in the file system, scroll down to the bottom and select: windows. Once in this folder, double-click on the C directory. Now we are in the Windows directory. If you know the specific location of your iTunes Library, navigate to this location; if your iTunes Library is the My Music folder, use the following navigation to get to the folder (replacing Your name with your Windows username)...

Documents and Settings -> Your name -> My Documents

In this folder, you will find the My Music folder. Click this folder, but do not double-click, or it will explore the folder. Once you have clicked the folder once (same goes for those who have their library in a separate location: click the folder once), press the Open button on the bottom-right of the locator window. Now the music files will begin to upload. You can see the progress in the bottom-left of Banshee. Cover art will also be downloaded to match the albums in your library. If some of the cover artwork does not automatically download, press the Tools tab, then mouseover the Cover Art option and then select Download Cover Art.

Now that you have your music imported to Banshee, there's only one thing left to do: listen to it! I hope this helps make the process of switching from Windows to OpenSUSE much easier, and much more fun. Note that some of the music formats may be restricted, and may require a special package to be installed to be able to listen to these restricted formats, for more help on that, refer to the Listening to Restricted Formats tutorial. Feel free to post any comments, concerns or suggestions below, and most importantly: enjoy!

$ Sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Y agregamos al final lo que corresponda.

The Intrepid Ibex (8.10)

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu intrepid main

deb-src http//ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu intrepid main

The Hardy Heron (8.04)

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu hardy main

The Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/banshee-team/ubuntu gutsy main

Luego solo queda actualizar apt-get:

$ sudo apt-get update

E instalar Banshee:

$ sudo apt-get install banshee

This Sunday, I'd like to look at some images drawn by the late Michael Turner, who passed away last month from cancer at the young age of 37. Turner is best know for his work on Witchblade, Fathom and various covers for Marvel and DC Comics (such as Brad Meltzer & Rags Morales' Identity Crisis mini-series). Comic Book Resources has a lovely eulogy here.

Storm fights a clone (Yes, it is every bit as bad as it sounds) of Thor in this Black Panther: Civil War tie-in issue. If this had been the real Thor, Ororo would still have been outmatched. Mutant versus God? Uh, yeah. Besides, Thor can just summon as much lightning and weather as he wants simply by force. Storm has to work with the powers of nature to bend them to her will. She knows that when she alters the climate of one area it affects another just as much. I don't see Thor really concerning himself with that kind of thing. Besides, how's Storm gonna argue with Mjolnir (Thor's hammer)? There's not much one can do to dodge the enchanted uru.

More Civil War crossover madness. From left to right we have Invisible Woman, Captain America, Black Panther, Storm, Falcon, and Tigra.

Storm and Black Panther join the Fantastic Four for a brief time (too brief, methinks) under the pen of writer Dwayne McDuffie.

I have to admit if Turner hadn't passed away, I probably woudn't have blogged about his version of Storm. Sometimes I really like his take on certain characters and other times I'm left cold. His stylistic anatomy is problematic (torsos go on and on) and backgrounds are usually nonexistent. I was really frustrated that Rags Morales didn't get to draw the covers for Identity Crisis since I thought Morales' art conveyed character in ways that Turner's covers never have for me. However, I do think Turner's art has pizazz. There's an electric sexiness that emanates from his work that's hard to quantify, but you can feel it when you look at it. This is most evident in his creator owned work (like Fathom) from Aspen comics. Sadly, what we have now is all we're going to get from Turner. It's time to remember a comics superstar for what he brought to the table and not what we wish he had done differently. Thanks, Michael, for bringing some zing back to comics!

Lately I’ve been thinking about how many of my favorite Marvel characters are deceased. Now I

Lately I've been thinking about how many of my favorite Marvel characters are deceased. Now I'm not talking about A-list characters here, maybe not even B-list. Dunno how you determine that anyway. The point is, I really miss some of these guys and I wish they weren't dead. At least when a character isn't being used you have some hope that someone will dust them off and bring them back into the spotlight again. The worst is when that someone brings them back just to unceremoniously kill them in their storyline to give their story some punch (or prove their new villain is hardcore or just to be shocking or maybe it's pointless).

Anyway, when I was introduced to the All-New Different X-Men, I really thought Banshee (aka Sean Cassidy) was cool. I didn't understand why he used a codename that has always been mythologically associated with a female entity (The word "banshee" is from the Old Irish, baen "woman" + síde: "fairy, otherwordly."), but I liked that he was Irish and he seemed older than the other characters. He was always going on about how he was too old to be superheroing and in spite of his reticence he hung in there and was an asset to the team.
When I learned that the character had been in older X-Men issues as a Factor Three villain (albeit brainwashed) and had been an Interpol agent, I really thought Banshee had some interesting dimensions as a character. And then there's his history with his villainous cousin Black Tom (longtime partner of the Juggernaut) as they fought over women, the inheritance of Cassidy Keep (their ancestral land) and how their powers didn't work on each other (you were always guaranteed some fisticuffs when they encountered each other; Marvel has a funny rule that if you are a mutant, then your powers don't work on your relatives, see Havok and Cyclops for more ). Black Tom kept the existence of Banshee's daughter, Siryn, from him until she was an adult.

Shortly after Banshee joined the X-men with Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, etc, he met Professor Xavier's former love, geneticist Moira MacTaggert and fell in love. Their relationship lasted a long time (especially by comic book standards) and Banshee was there for Moira when she mourned her dead son Kevin, aka Proteus, (this was after Banshee lost his powers for a time after a battle with villain Moses Magnum). I loved Sean and Moira together. They made a lot of sense to me as a couple and I think it created some interesting tension between Professor X and Moira (he was in love with Lilandra at this time).

Banshee served as Headmaster of the Xavier Academy for a while with Emma Frost (see issues of Generation X). The tension between the two was really fun to read about and I liked Banshee's strong father figure tendencies with the students, especially mouthy Jubilee and stuck up M.
After Moira was killed by Mystique, Banshee lost it, got all Tony Stark, er, I mean, alcoholic and then got all Iron Man, er, I mean, paramilitary and started X-Corp (even recruiting super-villains to his cause). Mystique slit his throat for his trouble, but didn't kill him. That would be left to Ed Brubaker in the X-Men: Deadly Genesis mini-series in which Banshee fails to save a plane full of civilians when the plane crashes into him.
I distinctly remember scenes from an Uncanny X-Men story on Muir Isle (Moira's research center) when Banshee (still sans powers) trains Dazzler, Rogue, Psylocke and Longshot. He smokes his pipe (a trademark of the character) and teaches them how to work together as a team. I liked him in the role of teacher. It suited him. I also remember how he and Forge had a tight friendship. Those two were always reliable supporting characters for the X-Men.
I forgot to mention the leprehauns. Yeah, Cassidy Keep is full of 'em. They helped out Nightcrawler once. And now that Banshee is dead, his daughter has inherited the Keep, leprechauns, pipe and all. In X-Factor, scribe Peter David wrote Siryn refusing to believe that her father was dead, citing all the X-Men who have died and returned. She has a point. In Marvel Comics, RIP might as well stand for "Return In Progress," but will that hold true for Banshee? I dinna know, me boyos and lassies, but I hope so.

FYI: The artists of the above images are Jim Lee (the top two), Lee Weeks, (I'm not sure who painted the Ultra Card) & Bryan Hitch.

Okay, lots of the CDs I've tried don't have MusicBrainz entries... fine, I'll try them in SoundJuicer... oh, wait, it is doing some sort of fallback to FreeDB... well, why doesn't Banshee do that?

Oh, and the submission to MusicBrainz in SoundJuicer... that's too hard, I don't understand what to do. I don't really have anything to add, I just want my tags to show up. WTF?

Oh, and BloGTK... eh... it kind of sucks. I need something better.

And what the heck is with SoundJuicer just falling over? It is as if it just gets tired of being second to Banshee and quits in frustration. :(

I had a really good session with Banshee last night. I’ve been trying to rip CDs for this even

I had a really good session with Banshee last night. I've been trying to rip CDs for this eventual portable media player I think I'm going to get. However, I've had a hard time coming to terms with a few things.

I have a machine with 4 cores and 4 optical drives, and I want all of them to work at the same time, so I can rip more discs faster.

I don't want to be tied to Windows or OS X. Actually, I don't mind being tied to OSX, but I can't really afford the hardware to rip the CDs efficiently under OS X. I like the iPod Touch. Rearlly, what I want is a player that will play .ogg files so I can be "free".

Just those two restrictions alone have been enough to make the decision hard. What software do I use? What device am I going to get? What format to I rip to? Being a Freedom Fighter is hard... every device uses .mp3, but the files are bigger, and there's the whold patent issue. Ripping to .mp3 on Linux involves "evil sorcery" that's easy enough, but not really what I want to do if I can avoid it. I thought about ripping to AAC/.m4a and using an iPod Touch, and my recent acquisition of a PowerBook makes this very attractive, but then there's the whole vendor lock-in issue.

I think I'm going to settle with Linux, and just try to find an MTP device I can live with, and I probably won't get an iPod just because of cost. Ripping to .mp3 is probably what I'll end up doing, I'd like to use Vorbis/.ogg, but I'm having a hard time finding a device that I really want that does it.

With all that decided, I had previously done some research on software on Linux for ripping CDs. Banshee recently went 1.0 and it's awesome. I put in 4 CDs and if there's information available, it rips the tracks and ejects the disc. If not, it just sits and waits. Unfortunately, it sat and waited on 2 out of the 10 discs I tried last night.

Sound Juicer works splendidly also, and picked up the discs that didn't automatically get track information in Banshee. Some sort of MusicBrainz interface... strange... since Banshee supposedly has MusicBrainz too... I'd just use SoundJuicer, but it wants me to actually select a single optical drive for ripping... no good for me.

I tried a few other apps, but Banshee was so easy and simple, I think I"m going to stick with it. Now I just need to find an media player that I can use with it. The Computer Geeks Discount Outlet had some old iRiver H10 devices for sale... maybe I can snag one of those. The iPod Touch lingers in my mind, but there's some "clones" that might work for me.

In my first post for some time, I’ve decided to mention simply that I’ve moved from usin

In my first post for some time, I've decided to mention simply that I've moved from using Rhythmbox to Banshee for all my audio needs. It took me a while because Banshee kept crashing until I removed old database files and allowed it to create new ones from scratch (which I only figured out after several aborted attempts to install, multiple 'remove --purge' attempts to no avail, before I searched my home folder for all mentions of banshee to expunge them).

I quite like it. Bits of it are very much polished - the music browser is good, and I particularly like the not-Cover Flow album cover browser. Simple but effective.

One of its (Banshee 1.0) biggest advantages for me is the ability to play back video files, so I can now subscribe to both audio and video podcasts in the same application. While it doesn't seem to handle that many video files, at least it's a start.

It has good Last.fm integration, which I see as a good thing even though I don't really use Last.fm that much - it's just good to have it scrobbling away, even if it doesn't automatically connect on start-up.

So in the past year I've used Rhythmbox, Exaile, Rhythmbox again for quite some time and now I'm on to Banshee. Oh, I used Amarok at some point as well. Spoilt for choice? It's a good thing. The app that does its job the best will win out. The 'market' would work better if all these apps used a common, open database format, so you could simply plug a different front-end on top and not have to re-scan your music collection every time you switch, but hey - it doesn't take long.
