I've never considered any commonalities between Conor "Bright Eyes" Oberst and Christian "Bishop Allen" Rudder, but now, after growns-up Conor has cultivated a striking resemblance to Rudder (in his new video for "Souled Out" (<-- clever spelling!), I may have to re-think things.

Bachelor of Arts play aggressive, minimal, jerky post punk with creative driving beats.I spoke to the super nice Angus from the band about Stanley Kubrick, travelling to Germany and the trials and tribulations being in an independent band.

How did you guys get together?

Bill and I were working on some ideas together and initially, Kevin our bassist and I were planning to start a separate, more intense project. We ended up merging the two ideas and replacing a lot of the keyboards and effects of the first phase of songs with more aggressive sounds. Pretty much BOA Mk1 - which exists now only as a few hundred demos floating around and a pretty amusing VICE interview if you can find it - is a completely different project to what we do now. It's funny also that a label in Spain got onto us and released the demo over there a while back. I'm not sure what they think of how it's all turned out so far.

You guys seem to incorporate a range of influences into your sound rather than having one from a direct era or scene. When it comes to writing do you guys go in with a specific sound in mind?

We write pop songs and that in itself is pretty much timeless in its aesthetics. Most of our songs these days are written together in the rehearsal studio but when it comes to more worked out individual ideas, we often record with very specific influences in mind, email them to each other then finally work them out and adapt them back in the studio. I wouldn't say that we're exclusive about maintaining a sound, especially considering our rebirth, however we are very keen to make sure that the songs we write best represent the group as we see it at the time. It happens quite a bit that we'll agree a song is good but it's just not right for BOA.

When you write do you go for the more traditional singer/songwriter feel starting with a guitar or are you more beat influenced

Definitely beat influenced; either that or repetitive patterns within the guitar or bass. Often we don't really play particularly complex passages compared to some of the stuff we scheme about and it's definitely a priority to streamline and refine but always have the parts working so that we can really go for it when we play live. There's a few tracks on the album that fit into the whole noise movement too. We've always been pretty keen on that stuff; it's a nice stab into the otherwise pop direction we've been going along. It's funny calling what we do pop - it's definitely within the loosest constraints of what you might otherwise associate with that word.

What movie do you think your music would best accompany and why?

2001: A Space Odyssey. The future, the past and some neat cryptic stuff that no-one truly can understand. Hmm, maybe it works in theory but probably not in reality. I've been checking out some Guy Sherwin shorts recently and it'd be exciting to work with a filmmaker of that direction; someone who is working intricately with light-space and visual rhythms.

Are film and books direct influences on your sound?

Yes; I tend to think that a group can't help but be influenced by everything. I mean, we don't exist in a vacuum. I live with two visual artists so there's always a steady stream of stuff to get inspired by but I guess that overall, I tend to get influenced by the conceptualism of folks like John Cage or Kasimir Malevich more than anything else. It can be a bit hazardous. On the flip-side, Bill is very well read and tends to draw from some really interesting works. Our album Infinite Jest has a literary namesake if you hunt it down.

Where do you guys feel more comfortable, studio or on stage?

Ah, of course; the age old debate. Both have their merits. We began in the studio so it will always feel natural and we are lucky to be able to move so quickly in that environment. But really, right now, we're about playing live. There's a certain characteristic that music takes on when you have the luxury of it surrounding you.

What are some of the difficulties facing a young indie band?

I think mostly the attitude that by being in a band, you're the most important person in the world. Sure, everyone is important but c'mon, really? My favourite groups are without fail, genuinely nice people who do what they do because they love it. The ones that succeed, if that's something that matters to you, aren't generally the ones that intend to from the outset. In fact most bands i really love come to exist by a series of chance accidents. It's really easy to make art, it just seriously matters whether or not you're doing it for the right reason for you.

Plans for the immediate future for Bachelor of Arts

At the moment, we're really excited to be releasing our debut record Infinite Jest in Australia. Early next year we're putting a split 7" out with NYC band Dinowalrus in the US and also are doing another vinyl release with some more good friends from Brooklyn a few months later.

Are their any plans to take your music overseas?

Yes actually. After the album release and tour, we're taking a few months off to work on stuff before heading overseas to play some shows and release the album elsewhere. At the moment we're scheduled to be in Germany around February then off to a few more places after that. I can kind of see relocation working for the band at some stage along the line. Maybe, maybe not. We feel pretty embedded within Melbourne at the moment.

Now can you give me your best over the top NME style description of the band?

I believe a magazine writer once called us "Brash-In-Your-Face-Jerky-Post-Rock that makes you want to slam your face into a wall" - or something of that effect. I don't really know what the NME would think of that. I mean, I don't even know what I think of that really! We're just making music; other people can work on the slogans.

Tour dates below chump-a-trons!

They mix the usual influences of post punk, but they put a new twist of things on the genre, mainly because of the singer's barritone (not in the done to death Ian Curtis way), yet still, powerfully emotional voice. They sound like The Birthday Party if they had more of a pop sensibility and high rotation. For me, at the moment, their killer tune is "The Void".

They are touring all around Oz with another promising indie band Mercy Arms,. So get off the internet and check these bands out!

Next up is Bachelor Of Arts.

These guys mix aggressive punk with some relentless drumming and extremely raw angular post punk guitar. The song "Apathy" is a perfect example of the mad rhythms and pulsating bass that these guys create. While the singer almost cries out cryptic lyrics that no one understands. No one, that is, other than those people who study math rock.

A must listen are tracks "AMPM" & "Teresa." Gee, these guys are really, really good and it's illegal if you like your indie rock and you haven’t listen to these guys yet, so get on it!

So today Jerry and I went to the Monash Uni open day. We went and got info on Psych courses and such

So today Jerry and I went to the Monash Uni open day. We went and got info on Psych courses and such~ it was fun... We sat in on the lecture at 2:30 which was pretty good, but it's still really confusing. I think I'll still do the Bachelor of Psychology though... but I didn't realise, that the electives you chose have to be in a certain group (like, Bio, Sociology, etc..) and you can't do languages ! (That's the advantage of doing a Bachelor of Arts). It's pretty exciting to be thinking about everything~~
The thing that sucks though, is to get into the honors year, you have to get an average of 80% over all your Psych-major 3rd year subjects (T_T). I'll be really stressing then... because with the BoP you're a bit screwed if you don't continue with Psych related courses...

I went and got information about Jap & French as well, I think I'll do a Diploma of Languages with those two, as well. It'd should be fun~ I can't wait to do Jap ! The lady at the stand was telling me about it, she asked me if liked Manga, lol. (Jerry thinks that all teachers would assume people starting Jap would be doing it because they're interested in Manga). She said there as a Manga translation group LOL. (Losers). I'm doing it because I love Jpop, of course~~~~~~~~~~~ m(^_^)m

French was kinda conusing though. If you do yr12 french and get 30 you should do French 6/7, but if you get higher than that and stayed there on exchange you should do 8/9, so I'm confused as to which I should do~ I don't want it to be too easy or too hard !!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel a bit sad otherwise... I don't know what's wrong. My eye's not that bad, it hasn't hurt since friday, but like, I just feel bored ('_')
Like there's not much to do ('_')
School work is boring. I feel behind with Methods, and even though it's stuff I did last year, I still should do the work~~ I'm afraid of failing and not getting into Psych next year =[ But I can't be bothered studying !!!! French is boring too. Flute, however, I've actually been managing to get practice done everyday... so yay for that ! But bleh. I felt constantly tired today,,, boo.... I wanna cry～～～ 泣きたい！！！

I am always jealous of people who are bilingual. Or trilingual. Or multilingual.
And you should be

I am always jealous of people who are bilingual. Or trilingual. Or multilingual.

And you should be jealous of them, too. Here are the top five reasons why.

Number one, they are smarter than people who don’t speak a second language. Well, at least, they use more of their brains in a more synthesized manner than mere “monolinguals”.

Number two, they are actually in the MAJORITY worldwide. So anyone who doesn’t speak more than one language? Not keeping up with the rest of the world, I’m afraid, most of whom who can switch back and forth between languages without blinking an eye.

Number three, when they don’t want you to know what they are talking about, they just switch off to rapidly speaking in a different language and you are left without a clue. Are they saying things that are nice? Mean? Indifferent? Making fun of you because you have black ink smudged all over your face? Who can say?

Number four, they look much more cosmopolitan than you do when they break out a book written in another language while travelling by plane, train, or automobile.

Number five, they have a world of opportunities available to them, and some of these are pretty glamorous, like being translators or foreign diplomats. Or spies.

So. Bottom line. Declaring a major in French/Spanish (or any other language, for that matter, except maybe Latin – NO OFFENCE TO MY LATIN PROF, WHO ROCKED) is a very good decision because it is very useful to know another language.

If you want to declare a major in French or Spanish, you are in for more than just grammar and pronunciation classes. You may take classes in literature, film, culture and other topics related to the language you are learning. Perhaps you will take a French class in university on Women Writers from the French-Colonized Islands, or French Canadian Language, Literature, and Film. You might take a Spanish class like Contemporary Hispanic Cultures or Hispanic Cinema or even Spanish Literature and Culture from the 18th Century to the Spanish Civil War.

And don’t forget about classes that teach you how to do translations. Way beyond conjugating “faire” and “avoir” or “ser” and “estar”.

For more information on a French/Spanish major and how to get started on one at Red Deer College, visit www.rdc.ab.ca/humss or call (403) 342.3304 or email ba@rdc.ab.ca

So tonight I cooked dinner. I made stirfy! It was really nice surprisingly~ I put three eggs in it, plus carrots, onion, garlic (yum), some caulliflower (what little was left...), and the meat... and noodles. The meat was pretty tender because I cooked it quickly first and took it out. Most of the time it's always tough as old boots when you leave it in for the whole time...
I used this Honey & Garlic sauce in it too which made it taste OISHII~~~~~

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="719" caption="Meat and Eggs, Noodles, Final Product"][/caption]

It's 10:30PM on Monday and I have to go to school tomorrow! Not fair! It's been over 3 weeks since term 2 ended. I've got 9 weeks to go and really that's it... it's quite scary when you think about it...

I'm a bit afraid of what's after school, to be honest. I mean, it's like, a giant void. You grow up with school, something you have to do every day no matter what (well, unless you wag *cough*), and it's just always been there.. for as long as I can remember... SCHOOL....
And then in 4 months it's all over. No more tests or exams, no more Catholic "lets go to Mass and pray to JESUS!" and stupid uniform, no more immaturity and no more homophobes, jocks, wogs, aimless groups and stupid idiots~~
Though I will be sad to leave Xavier, I must admit. Even though it's a shit school, I love my teachers. Especially Mme Vanderstichelle and Ms. Black (well her name's Mrs McGann, but I first had her in yr10 before she got married...). They're amazing <3 Mme V always makes French fun and exciting, and she's a great woman to talk to. Ms Black is so cool too. She's only like, 26ish, but she's so hilarious! I reckon she'd make a good blonde, because sometimes she's just SO ditzy. Though she's really smart. (I mean, she got like 97 or 98 or something incredibly high for her VCE score, and she did Physics and Maths at university >.> )

So next year... I'm going to try and get into a Bachelor of Psychology at Monash University... either that or a Bachelor of Arts. I really want to do Psychology, I made up my mind on that about two years ago... but I also really want to continue learning French, and also pick up Japanese. I can do both of those in an Arts degree, but I'm not sure about the Psychology. (If I did an Arts of course, I'dhave to do a double major in Psych). ~_~ it's all so confusing.

My head feels like it's going to explode.....

Nathalie Zydek, Mitarbeiterin Alnatura Mitarbeiterservice & Entwicklung:
Wie verlief Ihre Praxisphase in der Filiale? Wie ist die Stimmung?

Mona Thraen, Studentin:

Joachim Schledt, Leiter Alnatura Mitarbeiterservice & Entwicklung:

Jacqueline Seyfert, Filialleiterin Alnatura Super Natur Markt in Mannheim:

Malve-Marie Freischem:

Nathalie Zydek:
Was glaubt ihr, warum kombiniert man BWL mit Kunstinhalten?

Hannah Jäkel:
Um Ausgleich zu schaffen?

Mona Thraen:

In meinem Fall bin ich dann Bachelor of Arts in International Marketing.

It was during my third year in graduation from Delhi University that I got a chance to read Bachelor of Arts by R.K.Narayan. And from that time onwards, it has become one of my favourites.

Bachelor of Arts is a story about a young guy named Chandran, who has just passed college and is preparing to go to London for higher studies. During this period, he comes across a girl named Malti. It is love at first sight. From day one, the hero develops a liking for this girl, but cannot get the guts to propose to her directly.

But he sure has guts to talk marriage to his parents. Being the eldest son, even his father (who is a staunch Hindu and believes that the girl’s side must take initiative) accedes to his wishes. But god had different plans. The marriage never happens. The stars don’t match the bride and the groom and Malti is married to another person.

The story doesn’t end here. The hero flees from home to become a sanyasi or one who has given up the worldly life. Grows beard, eats less, and lives like a sanyasi. But his mind is not calm, the number one prerequisite to become a sanyasi. One day he thinks the futility of all these. Why has he left his parents, who catered to every desire of his for twenty years; only for a girl whom he had met just a month ago? As soon as the thinking dawns upon him, the desire to return home becomes strong in his mind.

And he does return. Though the return is painful, he slowly gets accustomed to life. And he does fall in love once again. This time with a girl who his parents have suggested for marriage.

I loved this book and until I gave this book to a friend would read it often. What about you all. Have you had a chance to go thru this book? If not, I will strongly recommend Bachelor of Arts by R.K. Narayan.
