Dhanvantari Jayanthi (Dhanvantari Jayanti or Dhanvantari Jayanti) is the third day of Diwali festiva

Dhanvantari Jayanthi (Dhanvantari Jayanti or Dhanvantari Jayanti) is the third day of Diwali festival. Dhanvantari Jayanthi is also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Triodasi or Dhan Teras. As you know, on the day of Dhan Teras people worship Sri Mahalaxmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. People also worship Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda on this day.

Who is Lord Dhanvantari?
According to the Hindu scriptures and traditions, Dhanvantari is an incarnation of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu, who appeared from the churning of the Ocean of Milk and then delivered to the demigods the nectar of immortality. He is the first teacher of the Ayur-veda, the Vedic medical science. As per the Vedas and Puranas, Dhanvantari is considered as the Physician of the Gods (Deva Vaidya). Hindus believe that worshiping and praying to him can improve their health. Dhanvantari is also considered as the earliest practitioner.

Myth Behind the Birth of Lord Dhanvantari:
During the time of churning the ocean of milk by Gods and demons for ‘Amrit’ (nectar), Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean with a pot of Amrit. On the same day Goddess Mahalaxmi also born. Hence people celebrate the birthdays of Goddess Laxmi and Lord Dhanvantari on the same day.

When is Dhanvantari Jayanti?
Dhanvantari Jayanti is celebrated on the 13th lunar day before Amavasya in the month of Aswayuja or Ashwin. It generally falls in October or November.

In 2008, Dhanvantari Jayanthi falls on 26th October, Sunday.
In 2009, Dhanvantari Jayanthi falls on 15th October, Thursday.

Appearance of Lord Dhanvantari:
Lord Dhanvantari appears - holding Amrit pot (nectar pot), Shankh (conch), Chakra and Jalauka in his four hands.

Dhanvantari Jayanti – Birthday Celebrations:
On the day of Dhan Teras, birthday celebrations of Dhanvantari, the God of health, take place in an enthusiastic and delightful atmosphere. Dhanvantari Jayanti is celebrated throughout India by the practitioners of Ayurveda, the Indian traditional medicine.

In South India, mainly in Tamilnadu and Kerala some temples are dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari. In these temples, Dhanvantari Jayanthi is celebrated with utmost devotion. In Ayurveda Maha Sammelan office, Dhanvantari Bhavan in Delhi, the Ayurvedic practitioners worship the big statue of Lord Dhanvantari.

Worship Lord Dhanvantari For A Better Health.

Change is everywhere. On one hand, we can see innovations in the field of science and technology; while on the other hand we observe a return to the ancient tradition. People all over the world are waking up to the need for Ayurvedic medicines and the stressing the importance of herbal medicines in curing or managing certain serious ailments. And India is the last country to realize the potential of this phenomenon, although it is here that the medicine was born.

However, better late than never, they say! And purists are now considering the importance of universal recognition for international promotion of herbal medicines. In a recent incident, almost 200 samples of herbal medicines bought from the Internet were tested by researchers of an American University and found to contain rich deposits of minerals and metals. This has come as a punch in the face of the herbal medicine market in India. For the first time, the Government is launching a quality checking program, a vigilance program unparalleled in the history of ancient Ayurveda. The Health Ministry has announced that all Ayurvedic doctors as well as patients can report any adverse effects of Ayurveda to a regulatory body that will investigate the matter and take legal actions against the company to ensure a ‘clean’ reputation for the Ayurvedic drugs.

The national research centre selected for this program is the Post Graduate Institute of Ayurveda at the Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar. There will be eight regional centres under this apex body that will report individual cases to the committee. The committee will cross check the cases before taking any decision. The committee will also report the case to the World Health Organization if the violation of norms is of serious nature. Such a pharmacovigilance initiative has also been taken in the past for preventing the corruption in the manufacturing and selling of modern allopathic medicines, but it yielded no result, thanks to corrupt doctors and irresponsible pharma companies.

For a $300 million market in India alone, and almost $1 billion world over, this was a move that had to come sooner or later. They say, “Health is wealth”. Better if India understands the potential of its traditional medicines promising heath to the individual and wealth to the economy!

I attended an Ayurvedic Cookery Course a few months ago. The course is offered periodically by the Art of Living Foundation and you can read more about at www.artofliving.org. The course was not just about cooking and recipes. Rather I learned the principles of Ayurveda, the science of life, and how they can help me live a healthy life by being aware of the composition of different body types, of vegetables and food types that work for the various body types , the six tastes and of the environment etc. I know I have not even begun to scratch the surface in learning Ayurveda, but I woud recommend this course to you because I learned a lot and it made me very aware of how what I eat and my daily routine affects how I feel. For locals in the SF Bay Area, the next course starts on November 6th- you can click here to review and register.

Anyway , since the course, I try to adopt as many of the principles as I can to my recipes. For example, I use turmeric and asafoetida in most dals I make. When I can, I soak the dals overnight so their sprouting process begins and enhances their nutrition. On a hot day, I use fennel seeds and coriander powder in my vegetable stir fry for their cooling qualities. This soup recipe incorporates some if the ayurvedic principles.

WHAT YOU NEED

- 1 Cup of Whole Masoor sal
- 1/2 a Cup of Rajma or kidney beans
- 1/2 a Cup of Pearl Barley
- 1 Carrot, diced
- 1 Cup of chopped green beans
- 1/2 a Tsp of turmeric
- 1 Tsp of coriander powder
- 1/2 a Tsp of asafoetida
- 1 1/2 Tsp of olive oil
- A 1/2 inch piece of Ginger
- salt to taste
- 4 Cups of water

HOW ITS DONE
1. Soak the Dal, rajma and barley with twice the water, overnight.
2. Heat the oil in a soup pot and add the spice powders. Then add the Ginger, minced.
3. Drain the dal, rajma and barley, and add it to the pot with the water. Let this cook for about 30 minutes, till they are almost done.
4. Add the diced carrots and salt to taste and cook foe another 10 minutes. The carrots should be almost done.
5. Finally, add the chopped beans and cook till they're done. The vegetables should still be crunchy. Turn off the heat.

Served with fresh arugula or spinach on top, this soup is a hearty, filling , yet light one pot meal that energizes you!

According to centuries-old Indian Ayurvedic philosophy, beauty is achieved through lifestyle choices

According to centuries-old Indian Ayurvedic philosophy, beauty is achieved through lifestyle choices that nourish the body and fulfill the mind. This healing system addresses all factors that influence the quality of life, such as maintaining a consistent daily routine, engaging in meditation and regular exercise, and sustaining a healthy diet.

The innovative formulations of the DoshaCare skincare line combine this Ayurvedic philosophy with the best of Western technology to produce an effective, powerful hybrid that reveals healthy, nourished skin. This truly customizable skincare line caters to the three Ayurvedic constitutions: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Based on the results of a brief DoshaCare skincare survey, you’ll discover how your specific mental and physical characteristics determine your constitution, or Dosha.

The DoshaCare line addresses more than your skin type; its formulators take into account your diet, exercise routine and personality traits to select the most appropriate skincare system.

The same care and dedication applied to formulating these products was also given to the sourcing, production and packaging of the entire DoshaCare line. Each DoshaCare product, made up of 98 percent botanical ingredients, comes from socially and environmentally sustainable sources and meets fair trade and vegan standards. The packaging yields to the highest standards of environmental responsibility, with tubes made of 70 percent recycled materials, bottles made of 100 percent recyclable materials and labels printed with environmentally-conscious soy ink. When producing its product boxes, DoshaCare uses recycled paper to construct the inner packaging and virgin paper sourced from managed forests for its outer packaging.

Dosha Profiles

Your Dosha not only reflects the characteristics of your skin, but also reflects your personality and general nature. Through a series of questions, the Dosha survey determines your primary and secondary Doshas. As people often discover their secondary Dosha differs greatly from their primary—DoshaCare’s customizable skincare line allots for these differences and allows you to create a skincare regimen to address all of your skin’s characteristics.

Dry skin generally characterizes people with a predominance of Vata in their nature. Also, as we age, our skin tends to become more Vata in terms of its condition. While an out-of-balance Vata can be characterized as easily excitable and anxious, they are also known for their adaptable and flexible nature when balanced. An irregular, inconsistent appetite generally accompanies the small, slender Vata frame.

When out of balance, inflamed and acne-prone skin accompanies the irritable and critical nature of Pittas. On the contrary, balanced Pittas are known for their strong, determined, goal-oriented mindsets.

People with a predominance of Kapha in their nature commonly experience congested, oily skin. Kaphas, generally known for their easy going, steady nature, can become withdrawn when out of balance.

The DoshaCare system offers a comprehensive skincare regimen of mix-and-match products to be tailored to your primary and secondary Doshas, including: cleansers, exfoliants, masques, moisturizers and elixirs.

The DoshaCare Sakala line presents an array of products appropriate for all Doshas, including: an exfoliant, refining tonic, eye and neck balm, environmental shield and a sunscreen.

The heart of Ayurvedic philosophy is based on the belief that all aspects of wellness, both internal and external, greatly affect our inner being. To this point, DoshaCare assembled an advisory board to provide a valuable resource for consumers: The Holistic Lifestyle Report. Ideas and information from experts in fields such as holistic dentistry, aromatherapy, nutrition, herbology and social and environmental responsibility convene on the pages of this bi-annual report to encourage consumers to apply Ayurvedic principals to all aspects of their lives.

Even in the decade of seventies Diabetes was a rare disease of the rare rich class in India, Only 1 out of 10,000 were diabetic as time progressed and another decade passed the number of diabetic patients also progress to 1 out of 5000 internationally .On foreseeing the rapid growth of disease globally WHO started comprehensive research project in this hetro-complication disease. In India Dr.MMS Ahuja started a clinic in 1959 at AIIMS Delhi to treat & collect a national data of Diabetes for the first time. By 1980 researchers assumed that excessive use of Tea, Refined Oil, Fertilizers, Chemical exposure, and some Drugs are responsible for the growth of the diabetes, but so many researchers didn’t agree with this because of unavailability of scientific data.Dr. Alka Singhal

In early 90’s the shooting number of diabetics compelled Indian researchers to start comprehensive research projects for the same, and found that costal region people were more prone to Diabetes than rest of Indians and with a view to treat patients and collect more data about the disease many government and non government organizations came ahead. In which “MV Diabetic Specialties Centre” was the first private clinic started in Chennai, Now it is well known centre for diabetes research and patient care under one roof in India.Dr. M.S.Singhal

At present the global scenario of diabetes is very challenging because the growth of the disease is rapid along with the complications. In India due to lack of awareness, life style and diet ,irregular and self medication with “take it easy policy” giving rise to DRC patients (like amputation, Kidney failure, visual disturbances leading to blindness, cardiac disorders, Nervous weakness, Impotency, Infertility etc.) resulting poor quality of life. So we thought to provide latest facilties in Haridwar by which maximum diabetics of North India can avail the advantage of technology to make their future safe & stress free .Diabetic Solutions

According to the study published recently in JAMA (Aug 27.2008), many Ayurvedic preparations sold through internet contains heavy metals above the normal limits. ("Lead, Mercury, and Arsenic in US- and Indian- manufactured Ayurvedic medicines sold via the Internet")

The study was done by expert doctors from western medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. The findings shows the actual alarming situation. This stuidy is very important atleast to take some steps against the illegal unauthentic sales of Ayurvedic preparations (vata, pitta, kapha teas, etc).

These preparations are not manufactured by standard pharmacies. Standard Pharmacies will not promote internet purchase because they are struggling to cope with the production need in India. The pharmacies which are not well known, promote this to sell their products. Some of these pharmacies collect the preparations from locals and pack it for trade.

As specified in the article “ Metals may be present due to the practice of rasa shastra“ Rasa shastra is the Ayurvedic section which deals with metallic preparations and its purification. These kinds of preparations are mostly used in North of India. This has developed in north India due to the influence of unani medicine because of the muslim invation in olden times.

In south, especially in Kerala the system of practice is different. They stick to classical herbal preparations even though some metalic preparations are told in classical texts.

Ayurvedic medicine should be taken by the advice of doctor. This is not a self healing medical system. If it is like that then there is no need to study around 5500 plus hours in the medical university to become an ayurvedic doctor.

Most of the herbs used in ayurveda got its own good and bad effect depending on its use. The preparations are introduced to a patient depending up on the nature of his body and mind, the disease, condition of the disease and stages of the disease. This is known only if you study the pharmacology, pathology, internal medicine, etc.

Ayurvedic preparations are not health supplements. Some of them we could tell, but most of them are not in this kind, it is having after effect if administered to a normal individual and in improper condition. Through the internet the preparations are obtained as supplements or teas. Is it possible to get antibiotics or other major drugs through internet?, even to get a deworming tablet in EU we need the receipt from doctor.

When any negative study report comes, the authorities try to escape mentioning “move to destroy ayurvedic system” rather than looking into it, finding the truth and to rectify the defects.

Why Chinese medicine is very famous among doctors and hospital and Indian medicine got stuck with esoteric and masseur groups? Chinese authorities worked for their system and were successful in convincing the medical society through out the world.

Indian authorities are having a major role for this pathetic situation. First they should regulate Indian system of medicine in the world because it is originated from Indian and the real medical study is happening there. Regulation should come for the practitioners, paramedical staffs and for the medicine and pharmacies.

The study is also a healthy one for Ayurvedic medicine because among the 193 products analysed only 20.7% of products having abnormal level of metals. This also reflects that if product manufactures stick on to the standard of manufacturing then 20.7 % can be reduced to zero.

Will this open the eyes of Authorities ?

Segue a receita:

http://highbloodpressure.about.com/od/associatedproblems/a/impotence.htm

Nobody knows exactly how high blood pressure causes erectile dysfunction and impotence. One leading theory is that the excess pressure in the blood vessels actually causes damage to small arteries in the penis. Normally, these arteries dilate in response to sexual stimulation, allowing more blood to flow into the spongy tissue of the penis to produce an erection. It is thought that excessive pressure on these arteries may cause tiny tears, which the body then repairs. In response to these tears, the healed arteries become thicker, allowing them to better resist further damage. These thicker arteries, though, aren’t able to respond as fast, or as completely, to demands for extra blood, so they become a sort of dam in the flow of blood to the erectile tissues of the penis.

One problem with this theory is that some studies seem to show that how long a patient has had high blood pressure is not as important for predicting the risk of erectile dysfunction as is the actual severity of the high blood pressure. In other words, someone who has had moderate hypertension for twenty years sometimes appears to be at lower risk for erectile dysfunction than a young man who has had very serious hypertension for only a few months. In light of this, other theories of how high blood pressure contributes to erectile dysfunction have been proposed.

Low male libido

http://www.thesite.org/sexandrelationships/couples/relationshipissues/lowmalelibido

Low male libido
If he's not up for some action it doesn't necessarily mean he's gone off you. TheSite looks at the other possible causes.

He's exhausted
If a man's physically knackered it can quickly sap his sex potential. Being out of shape won't help either. Even if he's just overworked, the only thing he'll want to do in bed is sleep.

He's depressed
Loss of libido is a symptom in almost three quarters of all depression cases, so if he's got the blues then sex is the one thing he won't have on his mind. Depression is a treatable condition, however, and talking about the issue plays a central role in recovery. A man who seems depressed should be encouraged to see his doctor, who can recommend an appropriate therapy.

He's medicated
Certain antidepressants and recreational drugs like cannabis are known to reduce sex drive. Excessive amounts of alcohol, heroin and cocaine will also have a marked effect on his libido.

He's low on testosterone
Low levels of this male hormone can decrease his passion potential. Hormone replacement therapy will help, but only his GP can diagnose if there's a problem.

He's unwell
The slightest sniffle can leave some people switched off sex, and everyone knows what bad patients men often make. Everyone copes with illness differently, of course, just be aware that in some cases a loss of libido can be symptomatic of a more serious condition, from thyroid disease to pituitary gland problems.

He has 'issues'
If his head's full of hassles, then sex can easily be squeezed. It's not just everyday stresses and strains that can take the wind from his sails. Problems stemming from his formative years may still be troubling him, especially if they're sex related. He may not want to talk about it on request, but if he's aware that his partner is concerned and keen to help, he'll know who to turn to when he's ready.

He's complacent
Sex-wise, the early stages of a relationship are often highly charged. The physical attraction, combined with the excitement of being intimate with someone new, can be a potent combination. Over time, however, as the emotional bond begins to strengthen, and lives return to normality, the instinct to get jiggy at every opportunity may well diminish. Still, there's a fine line between being comfortable with your other half and being complacent, and if a partner is feeling neglected then they should let him know!

A note for partners:
If your boyfriend's off sex and you're worried then you have to talk to him about it. Just avoid raising the subject when he's rolled away in a bid to get some shut-eye, and keep an open mind!

We had written on many occasions about the need for the involvement of Government of India in long term clinical studies of effectiveness of Ayurveda and traditional medicines. Such a study would enhance and rejuvenate Ayurveda medicine's stand all over the world. It has to be a big and credible effort from the government's side as there is a tendency to rubbish small studies as snake oil science.

A recent article in New York Times summarizes a few such efforts undertaken by various Universities, research institutions and academic centers across America. The article talks about opportunities and efforts on conducting studies on effectiveness of alternative medicine.

That kind of fog is what Dr. Briggs and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, with a budget of $122 million this year, are trying to eliminate. Their trials tend to be longer and larger. And if a treatment shows promise, the center extends the trials to many centers, further lowering the odds of false positives and investigator bias.

For instance, the center is conducting a large study to see if extracts from the ginkgo biloba tree can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The clinical trials involve centers in California, Maryland, North Carolina and Pennsylvania and recruited more than 3,000 patients, all of them over 75. The study is to end next year.[Using science to sort claims of alternative medicine]

I just love it and it is the best sweet I have tested. Mostly natural, if not completely. Eating it at anytime of the day is quite refreshing. I generally eat it after dinner, a couple of spoons and I just end up smiling to myself about how good it is.

English nomenclature (Rose Petal Jam): Many-a-times while writing in English, I feel i just cannot bear with the english translation of this word. "Gulkand" is one such word. Calling it "Rose Petal Jam" is worst. Jam?? Well, thats what it is and I will follow what it has been called.

This is small blurb about Gulkand, from www.ayurveda-foryou.com (A very good site).
Gulkand is undoubtedly the most delicious Ayurvedic preparation known to mankind. It is made primarily of rose petal which are collected at their peak condition. It also contains other rejuvenating herbs blended in just the right proportion. Gulkand has been traditionally used as a cooling tonic to combat fatigue, lethargy, muscular aches, biliousness, itching, and heat-related conditions. It is also naturally rich in calcium and has antioxidant activity. It can be used year-round by persons of all constitutions, especially Vata and Pitta.

A new study sheds additional light on how erectile dysfunction (ED) interacts with diabetes. The study is another step in uncovering the link between the two disorders, and may lead to improved efficacy in treatments.

Sexual dysfunction is a well-recognized consequence of diabetes mellitus in men. Erectile dysfunction, retrograde ejaculation and the loss of seminal emission have all been described by such patients. This study examined induced penile erection, yawning and stretch in diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats treated with streptozotocin (STZ) to induce diabetes were used as they exhibit sexual and behavioral symptoms similar to those found in diabetic men with sexual dysfunction.

Calling all men who want to become fathers! Soy products may reduce a man's sperm count. Based on a recent study, men who consume soy products may have lower sperm counts than those who don't. The study was based on a small group of men who visited the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center from 2000 to 2006.

Even though the study found that some of the men who ate soy products on a regular basis had lower sperm counts, the researchers conducting the study are not saying that soy products were the cause of the lower sperm concentrations. The men who had soy products in their diets recorded lower sperm counts than those that didn't, but their counts were still within the normal range.

Researchers don't deny that during the study men who consumed soy products had lower sperm counts, but they want people to realize there are other factors other than soy products that may have played a role in the lower sperm counts, such as being overweight or obese. Also, some researchers say the 99 men that were involved in the study may not be a good representation of the average population.

During the study, semen samples were taken from the men and they completed a questionnaire, asking how often they consumed specific soy products and the amounts of the products containing soy they ate. Based on the questionnaire, where the men presented their eating habits over the past three months, almost 40 of the men had no soy products in their diets, 18 had eaten soy products less than a couple times, 22 said they ate soy products between a couple times a month and a couple times a week, and 20 ate soy products at least a couple times a week.

The study, led by Jorge Chavarro with The Harvard School of Public Health, can be seen in the journal Human Reproduction. The researchers state that the clinical significance of their findings still need to be determined, but Chavarro said isoflavones in the soy—hormones that have similar effects to estrogen—could be affecting the sperm counts. The study didn't find that those who ate soy products were outside of the normal range, but they were lower than those men who didn't eat soy products at all and were especially lower in those men who were overweight or obese and ate soy products.

More research seems to be needed to draw more certain conclusions, in regards to sperm count and soy products, but if you already have a lower sperm count you may want to consider removing soy products from your diet just in case.

A landmark study, the first of its kind in the world, finds links between Prakriti, a fundamental principle of personalized medicine of Ayurveda, and modern genomics for development of predictive and personalized medicine. The study reveals that it is possible to identify groups within normal individuals of the populations, which could be predisposed to certain kind of diseases, and also might respond differently to drugs. Such integration of the principles of Ayurveda with genomics, appropriately termed as Ayurgenomics by the authors, holds great potential and promise for future predictive and personalized medicine at an affordable cost. For the first time it has been demonstrated that normal individuals within the same ethnic population, clustered on the basis of clinical criteria described in Ayurveda, show variations in the basal levels of blood parameters used in routine for diagnostic purposes, as well as in basal levels of expression of genes.

Human genome sequencing and subsequent mapping of genetic variability has allowed us to identify genetic variations and patterns of variability across diverse global populations. India has also put systematic and concerted efforts to identify relatedness amongst the diverse Indian populations at genetic level. The first step in this regard was the CSIR led Indian Genome Variation Consortium project which provided the first genetic landscape of India. In this project, 55 distinct populations of India, classified on the basis of linguistic lineage and ethnicity from different geographical zones of the country, were found to cluster into five major groups of relatedness.

However, despite greater genetic similarity there was high inter-individual variability within each cluster. This inter-individual variability confers differential susceptibility to common diseases like diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease and differential drug responsiveness. Therefore, the next logical step was to identify groups within these related populations that are likely to be similarly predisposed or protected from the disease. According to Ayurveda, an individual’s basic constitution, Prakriti, to a large extent, determines predisposition and prognosis to diseases as well as suitability of preventive and curative regimen for the same. This study explored whether this ancient and documented system of Prakriti analysis could be correlated in modern biology terms.

For this purpose, more than 1000 individuals were screened, out of which 120 individuals of predominant prakriti were identified, and subsequently 96 unrelated ethnically matched healthy individuals with predominance of either Vata (39 individuals), Pitta (29) or Kapha (28) prakriti, belonging to an age group of 18 – 40 years with equal numbers of both genders (n=48 in each case) were recruited for further analysis. Blood sampling was carried out from these individuals following all ethical guidelines. DNA, RNA and serum were isolated and whole genome expression profiling, using H19Kv8 cDNA microarray as well as biochemical testing for 33 parameters used in routine testing was carried out to study whether these groups exhibit any differences. These subjects were all from North India and of Indo-European origin. The genetic background of the subjects was reconfirmed through analysis of genetic similarity with this group and populations of the Indian genome variation project. The subjects shared genetic affinity with the Indo-European populations of North India.

In this study, normal individuals of the three most contrasting Prakriti types, namely, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, were identified following clinical criteria described in Ayurveda in Indian population of Indo-European origin. It was observed that these Prakriti types exhibited differences at biochemical profiles like liver function tests and lipid profiles and hematological parameters like haemoglobin level etc. Differential gene expression was found in significant number of housekeeping and disease related genes. A significant variation in expression of genes related to metabolism, transport, immune response and regulation of blood coagulation etc. was also observed.

The results of the study conceptualized by Prof Samir Brahmachari, Director General, CSIR and led by Dr. Mitali Mukerji at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology have been reported in the Journal of Translational Medicine recently (September 2008). There was intense involvement of Dr. Bhavana Prasher an Ayurveda expert and Dr. Sapna Negi a senior molecular biologist (senior authors of paper) along with a team of trans-disciplinary people that included Ayurveda doctors, molecular biologists, biochemists, bioinformaticians and statisticians.

Avoid Fake Herbal Medicine Companies

Herbal medicines are consumed by almost 80% of the world’s population. In India alone, the ind

Herbal medicines are consumed by almost 80% of the world's population. In India alone, the industry stands at a huge $1 billion. The demand comes from the people's faith in the 5000 year old science of life. Despite many allegations, people never lose their faith in Ayurvedic medicines. This leads to an increase in demand over the years. This is primarily because of the distrust associated to anything chemical, and modern drugs are composed of chemicals and nothing else. Herbal medicines stand for anything natural, and provide us a chance to establish an association with nature. This explains the consumer attitudes behind the purchase decisions.

But, the fly-by-night quack Ayurvedic companies are taking advantage of this faith. According to a recent finding, a whopping twenty percent of Ayurvedic medicines sold over the Internet contains over permissible limits of lead, mercury, or arsenic. The conclusion was arrived at after the researchers of a university purchased 193 samples of medicines available over the Internet and analyzed them for possible toxicity. And their doubts came to be true.

This is shocking since the herbal medicine market is mainly a export oriented market and the main demand comes from the foreigners, affected by health tourism and looking towards the east to fix their physiological problems. These guys are an easily decieved lot, and seldom cross check the products or even the profile of the company. The decision is influenced by an eye catching design of the website and a compelling copy that enthralls the readers. Some aggressive and often misguided SEO efforts lead to high Page Rank which makes the company listed among the first few pages of any search engine. Most of these products flaunt a GMP certification and there is no means by which you can verify this certification.

So, if you are living abroad and looking for herbal remedies to relieve you of asthma or other chronic illnesses, then don't go for any Tom-Dick-or Harry manufacturer. Take time to know more about the disease, its chances of recovery and the available medications. If you are purchasing something over the Internet, do a Google search for the company to look for any media mention or press release that has come out in a national daily. Also, look for the research and development work of the company. Remember, Ayurveda is not just a quack medication. You can't just mix some herbs, boil them and say, "Here is a miracle cure for Asthma!" It requires careful clinical experimentation and a proper lab-oriented approach to churn out the right medicine. Thankfully, the research work of Asoka Lifescience Limited is undertaken by Jadavpur University, one of the largest universities in Asia. Just the right approach needed to rub off the blemishes that fake companies put on Ayurveda.
