Tara had just been to a Foo Fighters concert the week prior where she braved massive hoards of drunken, insane fans all pushing and shoving to get closer to the stage. She managed to lose her shoes and gain a couple unsightly bruises by the time the curtain fell, so we prepared for much the same treatment the night of the Avril concert; we assumed that’s just how Germans did concerts. In preparation, I brought out my heavy duty shoes and put extra gel in my hair so I could spike anyone in the face should the need arise; I regretted leaving my brass knuckles and flame retardant pants at home.

Beforehand, we decided to do whatever it took to get to the stage and see our beloved Avril up close, so we started sizing up the competition along the way to Columbia Halle. Either we took the scenic route not used by most concert goers, or Avril’s demographic was significantly younger and, much to our pleasure, easier to beat up than we had anticipated. The streets were lined with prepubescent girls all boasting identical Avril getups: Pink, Plaid, and Converse. It was a sea of conforming non-conformists. I would have normally felt uncomfortable when walking around all that estrogen and face glitter, but today was a special occasion and nothing could tarnish the night.

We also noticed that quite a few parents were walking said children to the concert hall along the way. We reasoned they were just dropping their kids off like most, boundary-respecting parents would; what pre-teen in the history of the world would be caught dead in such a social situation with their parents? Apparently, every single one in Germany, Tara and I exclaimed with resentment as each one pulled out an extra ticket for the show. It put a serious damper on our plans of ass-kicking our way to the front of the stage where we could meet the original Ms sk8erboy herself.

The reality of the situation didn’t completely hit me until I was inside the hall itself. For a split second I thought I accidentally walked into a McDonald’s play place or something, because everyone looked so young. I’m not sure about you, but all kids between 4^th and 10^th grade tend to look the exact same to me; I’m just terrible when it comes to telling ages. Tara and I immediately made a beeline to the bar to help ease the shock.

Some of you weren’t even born when Avril first came out; you’re not real fans like us! Go back home to your stuffed animals and Barbie dolls!

About ten minutes passed and Tara and I were getting antsy. It was about time for the performance to start, so we started maneuvering through the crowd to get to the front. We were immediately met with dirty looks and nasty remarks by the dozen. Luckily Tara didn’t understand German, so she remained unphased when a pack of angry girls criticized her hair. We quickly realized this wasn’t one of those survival of the fittest/every man for himself mosh pits, so we switched strategies. Tara started calling out to our lost, fictitious little sister who probably wandered off towards the front of the stage. The hoard of angry little girls would rather have seen poor little Tiffany trampled to death than let some strangers get ahead of them, so our efforts were again met with failure.

My sadness soon evaporated when I noticed some movement on the stage… or perhaps because I finished my Smirnoff. Either way, my mood changed when the supporting act came on stage. Neither Tara nor I were very knowledgeable about female teeny-boppers or their musical infatuations, but apparently every girl aged 7-15 is head over heels for the Jonas Brothers. Their appearance was met with a volley of high pitched screams and declarations of love. I was quite convinced that some of the screams were so high that every dog within a five mile radius was going insane. It instantly gave me a savage headache, but my anticipation for Avril kept the pain at bay.

Anyways, let me just say that I don’t blame the teeny-boppers for loving the Jonas brothers, because wow. Actually, most of the ‘wow’ factor actually comes from the lead singer, Joe, but the other two aren’t bad looking in the least bit. They started off with an awesome song and I was pretty impressed with Joe’s singing ability, but then I realized he wasn’t really singing at all; he was basically a glorified backup singer inserting ooooohs and ahhhhhs every now and then. It was his brother Nick who did the vocals in addition to playing the guitar. The other brother, Kevin, was also on the guitar. Joe’s main contributions to the first couple songs were his good looks and hot stage presence. I’m sure the audience was pumped full of too many hormones to notice though.

He finally kicked in a couple songs later and did a rather good job, but then it was straight back to his position as the hot backup singer. Occasionally he switched things up and brought out the oh so complicated and difficult to play tambourine, but that was about it. I didn’t really care though; he was good at pumping up the crowd and was entertaining to watch. As the act progressed, he started shedding his clothes and I was just waiting for his shirt to come off, but alas it never did. Damn. Don’t give me that look; it’s not like I’m cheating on Jake Gyllenhaal or something, I was just looking.

Anyways, after the Jonas brothers left, I expected to see Avril do an immediate, dramatic entrance to play off of the excitement built by them, but no. She waited a full thirty two minutes (and yes, I was counting every one with anticipation) before she graced the stage with her presence. The mysterious black curtain hanging from the rafters suddenly dropped revealing her band and all the instruments and they immediately went into Girlfriend. I was ecstatic.

The backup dancers were perfectly on cue with each other and the choreography was excellent. I was so mesmerized by the waving flags and pink spot lights that I didn’t notice Avril slowly rising from the center of the stage. Her stage presence was even better than Joe Jonas’ and I was totally pumped for every song afterwards. Tara and I were belting out the lyrics and dancing to every song we knew; the bitchy tweens in front of us kept slinging dirty looks our way, but I knew they were just jealous of our singing ability.

All things considered, the Avril Lavigne concert was quite good. I would definitely recommend anyone with even a mild interest in her music to see her live. That’s not the fan in me recommending you do so, she truly is a good performer.

Meanwhile, Lavigne's management is saying she's made $2 million from her YouTube plays. As of this morning, her three official videos on the site -- Girlfriend, When You're Gone, and a Girlfriend remix -- have a collective 137.9 million views. So if my math's right, that works out to a $14.50 CPM split. Not too shabby. But for some reason Laipply is not a YouTube partner, so it seems he has to rely on dancing engagements and sponsorships from places like Sonos to pay the bills.

OK, and the story takes another twist with the operator of Avril Bandaids, the aforementioned fan site that ran an auto-refreshing autoplay page last month for Girlfriend -- which was originally posted February 27, 2007 -- in an attempt to surpass Evolution. Bandaids owner "Sharifa" wrote yesterday that the auto-refresh ploy was just a publicity stunt, in a passionate manifesto that you may not be able to see if the site's still down.

Basically, Sharifa admits dedicated Avril fans wouldn't create enough views to bring the video to the top spot because YouTube allegedly only allows 200 views per IP address. But the Lavigne fans' plot was reported all over the place (including here), prompting people all over the world to view the video. And the result, she says (I imagine with a cackle), is Lavigne getting her rightful place at the top of YouTube.

All along, I knew that YouTube capped the number of views added to a video at 200 per IP address per day. As such, the only way to make Girlfriend the most watched video on YouTube the fast way was to increase our reach, not our views per person. And the best way to do that was to use viral marketing to tap into traditional news sources. So our members went about inflating the count on the YouTube Viewer and spreading the link around the net.

In the mean time, the real end game of the campaign was unfolding nicely. As media outlets around the world began accusing Bandaids of cheating Avril's way into the record books, they drove thousands upon thousands of curious folks to watch Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend video on YouTube (yes, even you Perez). This resulted in a much larger boost to Avril's view count than Bandaids could ever have generated on its own.

Don't believe me? When the Viewer launched on June 19th, Girlfriend had amassed 88.0 million views on its own merits. On June 24th when the viewer was retired, Girlfriend had 88.9 million views – an increase largely on pace with what Girlfriend had been steadily gaining in the past few months. At best, Bandaids' YouTube Viewer added under 100,000 (legitimate, as per YouTube's terms of service) views to Girlfriend's total view count. The only thing we cheated was hundreds of reporters into doing our promo for us.

At current count, Girlfriend is 732,892 views away from becoming the most watched video of all time on YouTube. And when it does clinch first place, it won't be because of Bandaids, it will be because Avril Lavigne wrote an irresistible song and recorded a damn good video for it. We're just here to help Avril get the publicity she deserves.

It's not entirely clear that Sharifa's account is borne out by the numbers, but it does seem that Girlfriend has been hitting new heights in the past month. TubeMogul provided us with a chart of Girlfriend vs. Evolution dating back to March:

Evolution is embedded all over the Internet, and has a certain notoriety attached to holding onto the crown for so long. It also, as Chris noted this week, seems to be used in every demo of YouTube on other platforms -- something that happens with increasing frequency these days. Girlfriend, meanwhile, doesn't allow embeds. We'd speculated that YouTube was cracking down on autoplaying videos to combat efforts like Sharifa's, but it's not clear that's the case yet.

Anyways, surely we could be could all be off be curing AIDS or something, but it is what it is.

Voting for nominations in the Best Male Video and Best Female Video categories is open now through July  23. The nominees will be announced July 25.
