From “The Adventures of Working in a Tux” comes a life lesson.

I know what you’re think

From “The Adventures of Working in a Tux” comes a life lesson.

I know what you're thinking: “...eh?”

Well, I work at a hotel meeting place where people schedule all sorts of kinds of types of different kinds of types of events to take place. The most consistent type of event would have to be wedding receptions, but last night I was in for something quite different and unexpected. You see, in little ol' Chelsea, Michigan there is some kind of event going on right now called EMF.

Oh right, before I get too far into that— I basically have to wear a tux (with a vest rather than a jacket), hence “The Adventures of Working in a Tux.”

.....

Okay, not very creative or funny in the least bit.

Whatever.

Moving on—

As I was saying, an event called EMF was going on. I don't have the slightest idea what that stands for, but it has something to do with old fashioned cars. A good amount of fairly old people pulled up to the conference center in their Model-T-ish looking cars and came inside for the event.

I'm not really sure of what went on at the event, for I had the task of setting up tables for the weekend wedding in the room next door. But I could hear a little bit through the wall. I continued to pay no attention to their event when suddenly I had an interesting thought hit me. You see, some older fella had gone up front to sing some hymnish sounding music to a piano that had been recorded on a cassette tape that sounded as though it had been taken from an old school record. In other words, it sounded old.

Really old.

And after about 10 minutes of music, it struck me.

These people were singing a lot of songs of, about, or relating to cars.

These people were having church! They were worshipping the good ol' automobile.

The only lyrics I can remember is something along the lines of “16 miles an hour.”

A common possession/obsession/love had brought these people together. They gave lessons, sang songs, and who knows, maybe even a testimony or two.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that cars are evil or anything like that, but it was really weird for me to hear people sing about a car for a half an hour or however long they continued. Sometimes just the worship leader would sing, but sometimes all the people were all singing together in beautiful monophony. Oh, and there was much more clapping and cheering after the song than you will find in some churches as well.

These people had found joy in something. So much joy that they found themselves singing about it.

And that made me wonder...

What are the possessions I own that I love so much I would sing aloud my love with many others?

We're a worldly people. Needless to say, we like stuff. We put our lives into stuff. We would much rather store up treasures here on earth than in Heaven, because it brings us joy and happiness. And apparently, it can bring us so much joy that we could sing about it with a bunch of other people whom it also brings joy.

I've been thinking a lot lately about giving stuff up after reading Francis Chan's book “Crazy Love.” Having nothing has never sounded more appealing and even more so—

convicting.

We all have our treasures don't we?

She loves music

He loves sports

She loves reading

He loves video games

We can make idols out of ANYTHING. We're experts at it, especially here in America. I'm not much of a model to look at, so I pray that we work on this together. Let's learn what it's like to lose those things. My band recently wrote a song called “Custody” which refers to giving God the keys to everything we own. It was a hard song to write, because it's really hard to say at times.

And therefore, I leave you with these lyrics:

Verse 1

Being a pack rat is never

What I meant to be

Holding treasures at my side

And I never meant to

Let them get here in the way

Let them take over my life

Chorus

And all

All I have

All I have

Is under your control

Please take it back

And make me me without it

So I

I won’t need

I won’t need

These materials defining me

Your heart is what I long for

Verse 2

All the things I needed most

Were here where nothing is

But Your will to give me aim

I’m proceeding to proceed

Into where love abounds

If I leave my life of shame

Chorus

Listen to Custody here>

18 Jul, 2008, 1031 hrs IST, ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Aiming to expand its fleet of environment-friendly vehicles, homegrown utility vehicle major Mahindra & Mahindra plans to introduce an array of alternative fuel variants including CNG and hybrid versions of its flagship SUV Scorpio, besides plans to introduce electric vehicles.

M&M launched a CNG variant of its one tonner pick-up vehicle Bolero on Thursday, priced at Rs 5.42 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The vehicle will offer 40% saving on operating cost compared to a similar diesel vehicle. The company has already launched CNG variants of its Champion and Alfa three-wheelers in the market.

M&M marketing vice-president Vivek Nayer said: “As an automotive company, we are exploring all options and over time new vehicles with alternative fuels should happen. We have undertaken a sustainable mobility solution programme to explore various fuel options—hybrid, hydrogen, electric and eco-fuels—in the near future.

As the availability and infrastructure improve, we will be there.” The company is also looking at the electric vehicles for its commercial and passenger vehicle range. Without confirming any timeline for the launch Mr Nayer said: “The technology is already with us and we are capable of doing it. Availability of the right infrastructure is the challenge as you will need proper facilities to charge your vehicles while running across the city and more distant destinations.”

- "Courage. Take a test drive" (Courage.

Today, John McCain Addresses His Plan For Creating Jobs And Ensuring America's Energy Independence. At the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, where GM is developing the Chevy Volt -- the next generation of electric vehicle -- John McCain highlighted how his Lexington Project will encourage ingenuity in America's automobile industry.

John McCain Has Outlined A Clean Car Challenge That Will Increase Access To Zero Emission Cars. John McCain will issue a Clean Car Challenge to the automakers of America, in the form of a single and substantial tax credit for the consumer based on the reduction of carbon emissions. He will commit a $5,000 tax credit for each and every customer who buys a zero carbon emission car, encouraging automakers to be first on the market with these cars in order to capitalize on the consumer incentives. For other vehicles, a graduated tax credit will apply so that the lower the carbon emissions, the higher the tax credit.

John McCain Has Proposed A $300 Million Prize To Improve Battery Technology For Full Commercial Development Of Plug-In Hybrid And Fully Electric Automobiles. A $300 million prize should be awarded for the development of a battery package that has the size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars. That battery should deliver a power source at 30 percent of the current costs. At $300 million, the prize is one dollar for every man, woman and child in this country -- and a small price to pay for breaking our dependence on oil.

John McCain Supports Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) And Believes They Should Play A Greater Role In Our Transportation Sector. In just three years, Brazil went from new cars sales that were about 5 percent FFVs to over 70 percent of new vehicles that were FFVs. American automakers have committed to make 50 percent of their cars FFVs by 2012. John McCain calls on automakers to make a more rapid and complete switch to FFVs.

John McCain Believes Alcohol-Based Fuels Hold Great Promise As Both An Alternative To Gasoline And As A Means of Expanding Consumers' Choices. Some choices such as ethanol are on the market right now. The second generation of alcohol-based fuels like cellulosic ethanol, which won't compete with food crops, are showing great potential.

Transport is one of the major global consumers of energy and therefore has an important role in meeting the primary objective of the World Energy Council, sustainable energy for all. Transport is the only energy sector in which the energy itself is mobile during consumption, rather than being delivered for use at a fixed location. For this reason, energy for transport is dominated by petroleum, which is widely available, relatively inexpensive and from which easily transportable liquid fuels of high energy density such as gasoline and diesel are made.
The sustainability of petroleum and other fossil fuels within the timeframe of this study, to 2050, has been put into question by scientists, policymakers and other stakeholders. Sustainability is measured in terms of the 3 A’s criteria of accessibility, availability and acceptability, differentiating between the relative importance of different regions. Sustainability of fuels brings into question the sustainability of the associated vehicle technologies. In this study, existing and potential fuel and vehicle technologies are assessed both qualitatively (by the 3 A’s criteria) and quantitatively (by the contribution to reduced consumption) to determine a roadmap for technologies which can help meet the objective of sustainable energy. Other non-technical measures are also considered. The roadmap of technologies and measures is put into a practical context by considering the policies necessary to ensure that the objectives are met in the most efficient and effective way possible.

So a few weeks ago a neighbor had told me about how our local mechanic that we both go to had found a good stop leak type fluid to put in with the refrigerant in a cars air conditioning system. Since my car had been without A/C for almost a year I decided it was finally time to do something about it and gave my mechanic a call to see what he could do for me. Of course the stop leak additive did not fix my A/C and he said it was simply the receiver/drier which was bad but he couldn't get the part for a few days and then he was off last week. So I take my cruiser back a second time to have this part put in and when I call to see how it's going he says I'm going to have to bring it back the next day for a compressor as well! After replacing most if not all of the parts I have spent just over a thousand dollars BUT I do finally have ice cold air conditioning in my pt cruiser!

Unfortunately the Comet did decide to die on me when I had it out on Tuesday. Fortunately it was sitting in the parking lot at my mechanics. When I tried to fire it up to leave it did not want to start, it would crank fine but it didn't even try to catch and eventually I ended up wearing the battery down. After a couple of minutes investigation my mechanic diagnosed that the alternator was the culprit and for a fee he could replace it for me so for another $100 I now have a brand new alternator in the Comet which watching the ammeter even just idling seems to be charging the battery much more effeciently than the previous one. Only time will tell if I will be able to leave the battery connected for more than a few days without the battery going dead on me again.

We were asked to detail this white '05 Lamborgihini Murcielago that has just return from an extended excursion up north in Malaysia. Needless to say the car came with all kinds of traffic films, tars, bugs committing hara-kiri on the bonnets besides the usual swirls, scratches and light hologrammings. The paintwork looked a bit tired and yellowish so a complete restoration for both the paintwork and interior was needed!

The large panels of this 6.2L V12 beast makes it very tricky to get the paintwork prep just right as every imperfection are easily highlighted...

Fully detailed and the white are brought back to life...

A supercar such as Murcielago in white looks a bit plain (for my own taste)...compare this with a souped up pearl yellow Murcielago that we detailed a while ago and decide for yourself. Good thing I can't afford either of them so it's a problem I don't have to face for now...*haha* hic!

ENGINES FROM JAPAN HAVE LOW MILES, DO YOU KNOW WHY ?

It is very expensive to own a car in Japan. Gasoline, Highway tolls, Labor, cost of repairs & insurance cost up to 4 times more than US. One needs parking permit before they purchase a car, average parking in a commercial area is over $500 per month. Japanese vehicles have less miles in comparison to the US. So, a 10 year old car in Japan might have 50,000 miles on the engine compared to 100,000 on US engine. There are no after-market parts, very few body shops. It is not uncommon to spend $150/day to use a car. Most people use their cars on weekends & take shin-kansen (bullet train) or subway to work. Moreover all Japanese cars go through a stringent bi-annual inspection called SHAKEN. The cost of complying with these tests can run as much as 30% of the vehicle value. Cars with minor body damage are considered unsafe. There are few cars over 6 years old in service. Cars are recycled early. Compound these costs with propensity of Japanese consumers to drive only the latest models. The result is vehicles with tremendously low mileage are recycled. Vehicles in Japan suffer quick depreciation as cost of repairs is extremely high.

Locating low mileage, good-running engines & transmissions is a challenge. It requires great deal of endeavor, passion & infrastructure to keep our inventories stocked up. Right from the genesis of our company our aim has been to stock as much as possible; low mileage, well-maintained, running engines with good compression, no sludge & no cracks on the block. Our head office in Osaka, Japan ships over 20-30 containers of engines & auto-parts per month all over the world. We have a nexus of trustworthy suppliers all over Japan who have been making containers for us for over 15 years. We are constantly trying to supply hassle-free, tested engines.

We carry almost all models of following Japanese engines:

We ship Acura engines, Honda engines, Toyota engines, Lexus engines, Nissan engines, infiniti engines, mazda engines, mitsubishi engines, subaru engines and Suzuki engines nationwide.

If you need an engine or a transmission, please send us a price quote from our website www.usedjapanmotors.com or simply call us toll free at 1-866-418-3229 OR 1-713-863-9195 & experienced sales staff of ENGINE WORLD USA will be glad to assist you.

Let us explain who carefully we test our engines :

We have a great nexus of trustworthy suppliers who have been making containers for us for over 15 years. All engines are pulled from running cars, engine is started while in the car.

When we receive the container in the US, each & every engine is compression tested. To measure the cylinder pressure, we take out the spark plug, connect a pressure gauge to the cylinder & the engine is turned with the help of a battery starter connected to the starter motor of the engine. Cylinder pressure is measured as pounds per square inch (psi) The cylinder pressure (psi) difference between all 4 cylinders or 6 cylinders (incase of a V6 engine) must not be more than 10% . Sometimes the difference may be more than 10% as the engine has been stationary for several months so the valves may be sticking. In this case we lubricate the cylinders with WD40 (an effective lubricant). If the compression does not go up, we do leak down test to find out pressure leaks from valves, rings, block, or gaskets.

Oil Pressure—proper oil pressure in a used engine is a great indicator that the internal components are in good shape. Certainly an engine cannot be shipped with poor oil pressure and in fact much more detailed inspection would be required if low pressure was detected in a used engine.

We also check the engine for sludge. Sludge means “Oil build-up gunk” which blocks the passages, this is what cholesterol does in human body. We open the valve cover & oil pan to check for sludge & oil contents.

The block is carefully inspected for cracks. All external components are carefully removed from the engine as intake & exhaust manifold have O2 sensors according to Japanese emissions & other add-on parts, accessories & sensors are different from the US version.

We have qualified & experienced technicians who spend over two hours on each engine.

Therefore our emphasis lies more on ensuring good quality engines rather than ONLY focusing on low mileage. Haven’t you seen 2 year old cars with 5000-10,000 miles in serious conditions. One may not change engine oil regularly within 3000 miles & keeps on driving, as a result there will be a sludge build up & the car will end up in a repair shop requiring serious repairs or a new engine.

We are constantly trying to supply hassle-free, tested engines and we carry almost all models of following Japanese engines:

How to fit an HHO cell into a car or truck is quite straightforward. I would definitely recommend a manual, if you do not have one already. They are excellent value for money and will show you how to make as well as fit an HHO cell. Anyway, here are the basics of what to do. (Author: David Payn)

You can find more details about HHO cells and manuals by clicking here.

Take normal flexible plumbing hose and hook up your bubbler from the top of the electrolyzer. It is better for the bubbler to be housed a bit higher in your engine compartment than the HHO cell, but it is not essential. If it is higher, it means that any vapor collected during operation will flow back to the electrolyzer when the unit is not in use; it saves you having to clean it out so often.

Your bubbler can be as far away from where you have fitted the cell as you like. Space is often at a premium under the hood of modern automobiles, so you may be limited as to where you can place the bubbler and HHO cell. Some folk even attach them to the front of their grill. Anyway, measure out the distance between bubbler and cell before cutting to length.

You will then need to measure the distance (with any bends and turns) from your vapor catcher to the hole you have made in your carburetor intake hose. Cut to length.

The final step is to connect your electrical unit, which controls the whole system. They vary in sophistication depending on the manual you are following, but this is basically what you do. Remember, I am only telling you how to fit the HHO cell, not how all the individual components are made.

Connect the positive wire to the top of your HHO cell and the negative wire to the bottom. You need a good gauge wire with a fuse (15 amp is good in most cases) going to the car battery. You will need to connect the wire to the on/off switch on the electronic control unit itself. Then one to the vehicle's ignition fuse and then back again to the on/off switch.

Finally, you will be left with three or four, depending, negative wires. Connect them all together for convenience and send them to ground.

To fit an HHO cell is pretty quick once you have decided where to position the components. On most cars and trucks I can fit an HHO cell in about 20 minutes. Of course making the HHO kit itself takes a little longer. That said, I get all the parts mailed to me and in a tiny workshop in my kitchen, with minimum tools, it takes about 3 hours to come up with a fully functioning kit. More ...

July 17, 2008
By Tammy R. Lawson
I was quite amused by some of the stories that made news last week

July 17, 2008

By Tammy R. Lawson

I was quite amused by some of the stories that made news last week-two in particular.

First, District Attorney Mary Lacy of Boulder, Colorado, sent a two-page letter to John Ramsey about his murdered daughter, JonBenet, stating, "...we do not consider your immediate family including you, your wife, Patsy, and your son, Burke, to be under any suspicion in the commission of this crime."

Was that not a noble gesture? It's been 12 years since JonBenet died, and Patsy expired two years ago due to ovarian cancer at the age of 49.

While attending junior high school and growing up in the same town as she, I viewed a photo in the newspaper of Miss Paugh being crowned supreme at the state's pageant competition; her daughter's face later clichéd that of the hometown girl an entire state was proud of, even if she did wear too much eyeliner.

That family could have been cleared years ago; DNA evidence was found on the girl that didn't match any family member. In a court of law, that would have been reasonable doubt any defense lawyer could have toyed with just for fun.

But since a court of law was never assembled, a court of public opinion (fueled by unscrupulous journalists reporting innuendo close to the case as factual truth) did so while the district attorney's office and police stood idly by. Public officials knew they mishandled the case from hour one and needed a scapegoat.

At least the office finally apologized, and some would quip they are the sorriest.

How treacherous it was to watch the family's demise, but at least the living can take solace in knowing Patsy Paugh Ramsey died with her character fully intact. There are those living in Boulder who can't even claim that.

Now, here's a piece of friendly advice:

If you are using a microphone in a public forum and do not have complete control of the on/off switch, beware, for you never know who is listening.

Having written that, Jesse Jackson should have known better. Not realizing his mic was on, the modern-day quote maker himself whispered vulgar things during a Fox News program about wanting to cut off parts of Barack Obama's manmade anatomy, and according to the media outlet, we have yet to hear the worst.

Maybe the reverend should rephrase his infamous quote accordingly: "Keep hope alive, and bring me a knife!"

In the same breath, he accused the fellow Chicagoan of "talking down to black folks" by giving moral lectures to African Americans. Oh, the irony.

Jackson could easily be paralleled for his remarks and this was a prime instance of practicing what he doth not preach. After all, Jackson ran for president twice during the Democratic presidential primary in 1984 and again in 1988, so instead of demeaning his fellow man, realizing that he may have helped pave the way for the first black American to possibly be the next leader of the United States might fair him better.

Jackson once said, "If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it, I know I can achieve it." If so, the next time he hypocritically dines with the presidential candidate, secret service will be removing all sharp objects from the table as Obama sports a cup holding something other than coffee.

They remind me of the big dumb jock from high school…..he was good for something at one point in

They remind me of the big dumb jock from high school…..he was good for something at one point in time….but now that a few years have passed….what good is he?

Recently Edmunds.com published a story about the top 10 most efficient 4-door cars available. They ranked the cars based on EPA fuel economy numbers. And would you guess that not one car from an American manufacturer made the list!

With gas prices on the never-ending rise…..it’s clear that foreign automakers have their finger on the pulse of the car buying world.

Do American car companies just not care about what consumers want?

We do know that there are domestic hybrids out there……such as: the Ford Escape, Saturn Vue, and Chevy Silverado. But these are not cars at all!!!!!! They are SUV’s and Trucks. It seems that American car makers have decided to take aim at areas outside the hybrid car market.

So the Japanese have such a stranglehold on the hybrid car market, and the big American manufacturers won’t even give it a try. Actually Saturn does have Aura and that’s about it!! But now there is hope on the horizon…..

The Chevy Malibu Hybrid is coming out late this year. Horary for all you Bow Tie fans out there. But wait….just how good is the Malibu Hybrid….well according to the EPA; 27 MPG is the average you can expect to get out of this car. That is absolutely hilarious….my Nissan Sentra which is 8 years old, tops that number by 3 MPG and I don’t even practice gas saving driving.

But what about Ford all the Blue Oval fans out there shout? Nope…sorry…Ford doesn’t make a hybrid car. But the Escape hybrid SUV gets 32 MPG which is still better than the Malibu hybrid.

So 9 out of the 10 most fuel efficient sedans come from Japanese auto makers. The tenth comes from Kia. Kia……a company that is tiny compared to the big American Automakers. The future does not look good for domestic vehicles.

Of course the reigning champions are still there…..the Civic hybrid, the Prius hybrid, and the Camry hybrid are all on the list. The interesting thing is that 6 of the 10 most fuel efficient 4 door cars are not hybrids at all. They are small gasoline powered cars such as the Corolla.

Fuel Efficient Sedans…….Not A Domestic Insight!!!!!

A Hybrid with no Transmission…..and it gets 160 MPG too!!!

Generally; 10-20% of a car’s power is lost through the transmission. This includes all automobiles: cars, trucks, and even hybrids. The big auto manufacturers have all know this for years and have made more efficient transmissions over time. The factory rating for horsepower and torque are numbers taken from the flywheel…which means that they are numbers taken from the engine only. Real world numbers are gathered from the wheels (wheel horse power). So if you buy a new Nissan 350z rated from the factory at 280 horsepower…..it really is only putting down around 239 hp to the wheels…..Darn transmission!

But now Volvo has come up with an ingenious idea for Hybrid cars. Eliminate the Transmission altogether! Well that was simple enough…but wait….how will the car get going then without a transmission? Ahh…very good young grasshopper. The Volvo ReCharge “packs a small electric motor in each wheel, so that no power is lost in the drivetrain.” (popsci.com/cars/article/2008-03/how-it-works-tomorrows-hybrid)

The electric wheel motors will be powered by electro magnets and computers. All stuff that is way over my head. Just think of it as cool Bullet Train or roller coaster technology. Nevertheless….a pretty smart idea. Of course the car will run on battery power for a certain number of miles before the diesel engine kicks on. And since the engine will not be connected to a transmission; the power made will be transferred more efficiently to the batteries or a fuel cell. All of this adds up to a 160 MPG car…..Hopefully this technology will reach us before our economy collapses due to skyrocketing gas prices!

Now SSC plans to release the Ultimate Aero EV (electric vehicle); to crush the record as fastest electric car! The car is rumored to make 500 pollution-free horsepower. The question is how can SSC fit a 500 hp electric engine and battery pack in such a small car? I say good luck and Godspeed!
