we are all aware of what's happening to our planet, and more and more people see the benefits of shopping locally produced food. but what about all the other stuff? clothes, toys, furniture? i feel more and more disgusted by the way most of us live today, including myself. shop 'til you drop. let's face it, the only power we have as individuals, except for voting, is our power as consumers. where we choose to spend our money. where do you spend your money? who benefits from it? who are you supporting with your money? well, i have decided to be much more careful with who i'm giving my support to in form of money. which in one way means more yarn and less ready-made clothes. doesn't that sound like a good equation? which brings be back to my earlier point, i really need to finish that jumper if i want to have a nice, warm, and above all: stylish! article of clothing this fall. and there are fringe benefits: it's an original, i will have the only one in existance and i had the fun of knitting it myself.

the cotton bolero i had to finish in time for a friends wedding was almost finished, i didn't have time to complete the crocheted edgings, but i wore it anyway. it turned out a little too big, so my plan is to wash it in the washing mashine before finishing the edges, i hope that will do the trick. one reason for the size was the time issue. i didn't have time to block properly, so i ironed the pieces instead and then pressed them a little too vigorously... it looks a bit sad and wonky at the moment, but i have hopes for its glorious return as a successful fo!

Being a bit more specific with its engine details, Aston Martin has revealed that this is not an enlarged version of the current DBS (as was previously speculated), but indeed an all new engine. The size? 7.3-litres, thank you very much.

Also announced is the power output. Said to “top 700bhp” (520kW), the new V12 will hurl the car from 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 320km/h.

More details have emerged on the web, with the transmission being said to be an automated manual six-speed with paddle shifts.

Torque is touted as being over 750Nm, with traction being controlled by not only dynamic stability control, but also an adaptive suspension system.

With its aluminium panels, and carbon-fibre monocoque, the weight of the car is being put at around 1500kgs. That being the case,  in gear acceleration should be formidable, too.

The launch of a new Birmingham-based magazine focusing on creating a fairer city was celebrated this weekend at a gig with two Midland ska legends.

Ex-Specials member Neville Staple and singer from The Beat, Ranking Roger, came together for a special gig at an event to mark the 10th anniversary of Birmingham-based equalities and human rights charity BRAP.

BRAP, formerly known as Birmingham Race Action Partnership, last month brought out the first edition of Speak Out, a three-monthly free magazine produced with funding from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Speak Out editor Chris Allen explained the ethos behind the magazine.

“The aim is really to get the issue of equality out there to everybody. It’s about breaking down barriers and making a fairer city.

“We want to make it a fairer place for everybody, not just a few minority groups and the vision for the magazine is to convey that.”

Originally from London, Mr Allen said Birmingham was an ideal place to launch a magazine focusing on equalities.

“The reason why Birmingham is a great place is people do seem to be prouder of their diversity. I’m not saying it’s perfect and I’m certainly not looking at it through rose-tinted glasses, but there seems to be a coming together of people in a place where they can settle.

“It’s a great place to launch, it’s amazingly diverse and there is a history of people coming to the city.

“Diversity is part of the fabric of Birmingham and people really want to know about the issues we are covering.”

Mr Allen, a former freelance journalist and university lecturer, said the magazine was not aimed at any particular target readership or minority group.

Speak Out features a mixture of content, such as comment pieces, “think pieces” as well as more light-hearted vox pop interviews on subjects such as whether there is a Brummie identity. Content for the magazine is supplied by volunteers. “We’re not excluding anyone,” said Mr Allen. We’re talking about the message and issues of fairness and equality for everyone.

“For example we featured an interview with Ranking Roger who grew up as a black man in Birmingham, challenging stereotypes as a teenager by being a punk and then getting involved in the Two Tone scene.

“Since then he has been involved at being proud to be a Brummie – it’s about putting out a positive message.”

About 5000 copies of Speak Out were produced for the first edition and its publishers are hoping to increase that number to 7,500 for its next edition in November.

Speak Out has agreements in place to give the magazine away in several city locations such as arts centres, pubs and shops but the magazine is looking to increase its number of distribution locations.

Among the distributors are all of Birmingham’s libraries, arts centre The Drum in Aston as well as city centre sandwich and coffee shop EAT.

Fabio Cappelo was desperate to find some fire power to brighten up the England squad and wanted to look outside the top 4 for some raw talent, and what a better match to go to then Man City v West Ham, full of English talent.

I dare say in the first 3 minutes Cappelo must have been slightly excited with West Ham turning out some classy moves in midfield, but then man City turned on the pressure and played the ball from defence in 2 to 3 immaculate passes and running rings around the West Ham midfield.

What did Capello think? probably the same as most West Ham fans thought, What a waste of 90 minutes! and no chance playing for England

Whilst I don't disagree with the appointment, personally I would have preferred to seen Steven Gerrard in that role. Howeve, I feel that either he (Gerrard) Rio Ferdinand or John Terry would do a decent job.

This brings us neatly onto the selection of the squad... who will Don Fabio (don't you just loathe The Sun) pick. Well... here is my selection and formation.

Firstly my formation... I would go for a 4-5-1 formation, similar to that used by both Liverpool, Chelsea and English and Premier League champions (sic) Manchester United. This involves a standard back four with attacking fullbacks with two defensively minded midfielders just in front supporting three attacking midfielders and a single (preferably Strong and fast striker) up front. The reason for this selection is simple... most of the players chosen in this squad know this system as they play it for their domestic clubs.... and it produces attractive attacking football, something that has been missing from England for a long time.

So the squad...

Goalkeeper: David James
James for me still has to be England's number one, despite getting on a bit and being prone to the odd clanger their are very few better keepers in the premiership... let alone English ones. He adds experience and is a good communicator at the back.
Other contenders for this spot include: Green, Foster, Carson, Hart and Manual Alumina (if he can get English citizenship he should be considered)... Paul Robinson would have to show a complete change in fortune to be considered.

Right Back: Wes Brown
Despite not particularly liking this player, right fullback is a position in which England are woefully short of cover. Wes can attack and cross a ball, and his positional sense isn't bad... in essence you can be THAT bad if you've won the Premier League and Champions League.
Other considerations: Micah Richards Glen Johnson and Gary Neville (if he ever shows some of his previous form)

Center backs: John Terry and Rio Ferdinand
Two of the best defenders in the world let alone England and this has to be the first choice center back pairing. Rio is fast and (despite loosing concentration occasionally) a very good reader of the game. Terry will sacrifice anything for his team... just don't let him take a penalty.
Other considerations: Woodgate (if fit), Micah Richards, David (Davros) Wheater.

Left Back: Ashley (money money money) Cole
Ashley blows (allegedly) hot and cold, but there is little doubt that he is England's best left full back. Although he isn't very tall, he is very fast and makes Christiano Ronaldo look pretty ordinary whenever he plays against him. He will have a big year for Chelsea this year under (allegedly ;-)) Scolari.
Other considerations: Wayne Bridge, Matthew (goal of the season) Taylor.

Defensive Midfielders: Owen Hargreaves and Gareth Barry
Owen Hargreaves was the man we all loved to hate a few years ago but has gone on to show what a very good player he is. A real work horse with good versatility he must start if fit. Gareth Barry, lusted after by Rafa Benitez and Liverpool fans alike is my second choice. When I first thought about this squad I didn't think that choosing two DMs would be hard, but there is a real lack of quality in this area. Barry gets the nod over the others because he is a natural leader and is left footed, he also takes a good set piece.
Other considerations: Michael Carrick, Huddestone, Mark Noble.

Attacking Midfielders/Forwards: Joe Cole, Gerrard, Rooney
Three of the most technically gifted English footballers all very strong with a reasonable amount of pace. All can pass and shoot... all of them quality.
Other considerations: Lampard, David Bentley, Ashley Young, Jermain Jenas, Shaun Write-Phillips, Arron Lennon, Stewart Downing, Kieron Dyer

Striker: Gabriel Agbonlahor
A controversial choice. Gabby has shown his ability in the last two seasons in the prem, he is lightning fast and knows how to find the back of the net. He's also very young and likely to improve and isn't made of glass, so wont break in half as soon as someone comes close.
Other considerations: Ashton, Crouch, Owen, Defoe, Walcott.

What is one thing Aston Martin and Porsche have in common? This is easy, their desire for speed, beauty, and exhilaration, which is displayed in their pulse pounding sports cars. The two companies compete in the exotic tier of sports cars with price tags as high as some mortgages, but I do have to say they both make one hell of a sports car. Aston Martin and Porsche have decided to mix up the exotic tier by making their 2 door rocket cars grow, literally. Both companies are planning to launch 4 door super sedans that share the same blood lines as their coupes. Aston Martin is launching their new concept named the Rapide, that has been in the works for the last couple of years. The main idea is to make a practical, beautiful, and superlative performer. The sedan's architecture is derived from Aston Martin's flagship DB9. The Rapide resembles a longer DB9, and is powered by a similar V12 engine boasting 480 brake horsepower. Porsche is launching the brand new Panamera, which is derived from Porsche's previous endeavor into the SUV market. The Panamera will share very similar platforms to the Cayenne including its engine choices. The Porsche Cayenne (SUV) has been critiqued for being a sport derived SUV that has created a new performance market in SUV's, and has also provided the funding for Porsche to further extend their line up. Porsche is known for its legendary Carrera Sports car, but has looked at making Porsche a more "practical" super car brand,

 The Panamera will be the first sedan developed by Porsche and will be looking at a V6 or V8 engine. Porsche is also in the works for developing a hybrid engine that will first be found in the Porsche Cayenne, and later following in the Panamera, which plans on creating another new super car market. These new sedans are demonstrating a new era in sports car with the main objective being "practicality". These two new concepts will be battling it out with other luxury sedans, but in the end hoping to have the edge being backed by legendary sports car's names.

This, then, is just a few things in this county that struck me as being worthy of particular note.

~ Tonight (1st of August) will see the Capsule gal dem put on Japanese psych-noise collective Acid Mothers Temple at The Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath. They played there really not too long ago, and although I wasn't able to make it to that one pretty much everyone who went seems to say it was an amazing gig.

~ I'd suggest you head on over to the Villa Ground on the evening of Saturday the 2nd, for AMMA. No-head-shots-on-the-ground MMA, from a promotion who always run things well and match their fighters up excellently. I'm particularly looking forward to longtime favourite of this blog Danny Korbely defending his featherweight title against Gareth Pilot. That should definitely be a good 'un.

~ Rolo Tomassi appear to be playing at something called Summer Slam (yeah, that's the association my mind made too) at Wolverhampton Civic on the 9th. The rest of the bill looks like a load of cack for the most part, but it's probably worth noting somewhere at the back of your mind.

~ Hank Rollins, lord love 'im, will be bringing his 'Provoked' spoken word tour to The Glee Club on the 10th. I saw it in January and it's both funny and interesting.

~ Birmingham Opera Company are going back to their context-sliding ways and occupying The Sherborne Building (formerly a rubber factory) in Ladywood for performances of Mozart's Idomeneo on various dates between the 12th and the 23rd.

~ It seems that there is a festival of quilts taking place at the NEC between the 14th and 17th. I know it's too hot now but you'll want them come winter.

~ Clutch are of course The Best Rock Band Currently Going (as I've said far too many times for it to still count for anything) and they're playing at The Barfly on Friday the 29th for all you lucky people.

~ The Moseley Folk Festival is running over three days this year (the 29th to the 30th) and it's always lovely. I'm only going to be able to make it to the Sunday, alas, but there's plenty lined up.
