A briga pelas quatro primeiras posições é sempre ligada ao 'Big Four', grupo composto pelos quatro maiores clubes ingleses na atualidade (Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal e Liverpool), e raramente algum time que não seja um desses quatro termina acima do quinto lugar. Exceção à regra, o Everton conseguiu este feito na temporada 2004/05 mas, não chegou a fase de Grupos da UEFA Champions League. Nas temporadas seguintes, o grande favorito para beliscar a quarta vaga para a competição foi o Tottenham, chegando até a brigar com o rival Arsenal até a última rodada em uma ocasião.

Pra essa temporada, o Tottenham, agora comandado pelo excelente Juande Ramos e com a moral de ter vencido a Carling Cup sobre o Chelsea investiu e mostrou que vem pra essa briga novamente mas, uma outro equipe, pouco notada e falada também investiu, conta com um excelente técnico e talvez seja até mais promissora na briga pela vaga na UCL que o Tottenham. Essa equipe é o Aston Villa.

Conta com um treinador vencedor, que teria lugar hoje até nos times do 'Big Four' se estes times não tivessem treinadores 'tops'. Martin O'Neill já provou em outros clubes e nas temporadas anteriores que tem estado no Villa que sabe usar o material humano que tem e que se movimenta bem no mercado.

O elenco da equipe nessa temporada contém muitas peças do time da temporada passada, mas trouxe boas opções pra reserva e pra brigarem pelo time titular.

O elenco que conta com nomes como John Carew, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, Nicky Shorey, Brad Friedel, o valorizado Gareth Barry mescla peças experientes e já conhecidas no mundo do futebol com nomes promissores que já provaram dentro do futebol inglês sua qualidade. A estréia com uma excelente vitória em cima do bo time do Manchester City, fez com que o time de O'Neill mostrasse sua cara já na estréia e largasse na frente na briga pela vaga na UCL.

O hattrick de Gabriel Agbonlahor é só a prova que o time não precisa de grandes nomes para mostrar um bom futebol, e nomes que não atuaram na estréia como Routledge e Sidwell fazem sombra aos titulares e mostram que se é necessário elenco para conseguir chegar ao objetivo, o Aston Villa pode chegar lá.

Gabriel Agbonlahor may have missed out on Fabio Capello’s England squad, but he gained compensation as the Barclays Premier League Actim Index got under way. The young forward’s hat-trick in Aston Villa’s 4-2 win over Manchester City earned him 63 points to catapult him to the top of the standings.

Frank Lampard celebrated his bumper new five-year deal at Chelsea with a goal and an all-action performance in Chelsea’s 4-0 thumping of Portsmouth. Team-mate Deco may have claimed the headlines with a debut that netted him an impressive 33 points, but Lampard’s goal plus four shots on target and 38 passes sealed second place in the Index with 47.

In fact, it was a good week for the men pulling the strings as midfielders claimed five of the top 10 places in the week’s standings. David Dunn’s wonder strike against Everton not only suggested he may be able to fill David Bentley’s boots at Blackburn but also put him in the top 10 along with Lampard, Deco, Chelsea's Joe Cole and Hull hero Geovanni, who netted on his League debut for the Tigers against Fulham.

It was also an impressive weekend for Arsenal debutant Samir Nasri, who racked up 21 points for the Gunners in a fine introduction to Premier League life. The former Marseille winger registered the only goal in the victory over West Brom while also making it an uncomfortable debut for Scott Carson with four shots on target.

West Ham's Dean Ashton was on the pitch for less time than anyone else in the top 24 places but still managed to register two goals and two shots off target in his 74 minutes to notch 41 points, which gave him fifth place in the Index. He left the pitch with what was feared to be a calf injury but luckily for the striker it turned out to be cramp and he should be back for the clash with Manchester City.

In contrast, Wigan’s Honduran defender, Maynor Figueroa, had a nightmare weekend as he clocked up five shots off target and three fouls in Wigan’s defeat to West Ham to end the week on minus 26 points. But he was not the only Latic to have a bad start, as striker Amr Zaki and midfielders Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios all ended in minus figures on -13, -4 and -2 respectively.

It was just as bad for Tottenham, who also ended the week with four men in the red after their 2-1 loss at Middlesbrough - Bentley and Gareth Bale (-5), Giovanni and Darren Bent (-4).

The discipline Italian rather looks at long-term prospect of ability to show consistency performance & teamwork commitment especially when implementing his tactical knowledge. One game display is not enough to warrant for a starting line-up, given that competition for strike-force places are very competitive with Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Michael Owen are all eyeing the regular line-up..

Y durante su estancia en las Islas, los periodistas británicos no van a parar de preguntarle acerca del supuesto interés de Aston Villa y Fulham en hacerse con sus servicios.

El medio Setantasports ya lo ha hecho, ante lo que Plasil ha dejado claro que de momento sólo tiene en mente el partido ante el conjunto dirigido por Fabio Capello. "El club no ha recibido ninguna oferta oficial y no está interesado en venderme", ha declarado el futbolista de Osasuna, quien ha añadido que estos rumores no van a afectar a su juego.

De este modo, Plasil se ha remitido a las palabras del presidente del club, Patxi Izco, que la semana pasada dejó claro que tanto el checo como Javier Portillo "no están en venta". "Ni tan siquiera han habido llamadas", apuntó el máximo mandatario rojillo.

No obstante, de todos es conocido que Osasuna es un club vendedor; y en el caso de que llegue una oferta suculenta por el checo, el conjunto de Iruñea no pondrá dificultades a su salida (el año pasado se pagó 2,2 millones de euros al Monaco por Plasil).
