Поредната важна стъпка в развитието на многоплатформения графичен редактор с отворен код The GNU Image Manipulation Program(накратко GIMP) бе направена с това издание. Накратко:

GIMP 2.6 е важно издание от гледна точка на разработчиците. То включва промени по потребителския интерфейс(UI), които поправят някои от най-често получените  оплаквания, както и екпериментална интеграция на GEGL, the graph based image processing library, която в последствие ще внедри високо битова наситеност/дълбочина(high bit-depth) и  недеструктивно редактиране(non-destructive editing) в GIMP. Многобройните промени са:

• Toolbox Menubar Removed
• Toolbox and Docks are Utility windows
• Ability to Pan Beyond Image Border
• Renamed Dialogs menu to Windows.
• Keep a list of recently closed Docks and allow reopening them.
• Make opening images in already running GIMP instances work better on Windows.
• You can now enter the image zoom ratio directly in the status bar.
• Added support for using online help instead of a locally installed GIMP Help package.
• Make it possible to lock tabs in docks to prevent accidental moving.

Miranda IM, заедно с Pidgin и още няколко подобни проекта с отворен код са най-функционалните инстантни месинджъри(IM) в последните години. Те са в непрестанна разработка и са практически швейцарските ножчета в поддръжката на най-голям брой IM протоколи сред комерсиалните си събратя като MSN, AIM и дори патентования протокол със затворен код на Skype. Настоящата версия(v0.7.10) включва предимно поправки по стабилността и минорни поправки по поддръжката на MSN, ICQ и Gadu-Gadu протоколите. Най-добрата му страна е възможността за използване на персонализирани кожи за contact list-а, препоръчвам секцията в deviantART за Miranda IM skins като добро място, от което можете да си изтеглите нови кожи. Ето три примера за качествени кожи - Latte IM, Rino Skin и Miranda NION. Дори успях да намеря и кратък урок на английски, ако имате желание сами да си създадете скин за Миранда. Докопах се и до още една полезна връзка, с линкове относно създаването на скинове(кожи)/визуални теми за WinAmp, WMP, BSPlayer, VLC media player, Sony Ericsson GSMs, Nokia GSMs, Motorola GSMs, Opera v9.5+ browser, Mozilla Firefox 3+ browser, ICQ, Miranda IM и Yahoo! Apophysis 2.08 BETA [оценка на редактора-6/6]
Apophysis се превърна в един от най-популярните и използвани генератори на фрактални изображения чрез програмиране на параметрите им. След излизането на версия 2.02 все още не са се появили нови стабилни издания, затова се налага използването на бета версиите, последната от които е именно 2.08. Благодарение на многото си почитатели и автори на фрактали(най-вече от deviantART.com), програмата се сдоби с 3D хак, с който функционалността й се разшири значително. Примери за това, на което е способна програмата при наличие на добър Apophysis програмист, мощен компютър и няколкочасово рендване се намират в изобилие в deviantART.

ASCII Generator dotNET(ascgen2) v0.9.6 [оценка на редактора-6/6]
Наследникът на най-добрата програма от този сорт в миналото се  превръща в абсолютният победител в надпреварата за титлата best ASCII art generator ever! ASCII art е термин, с който се обозначава тип изкуство, при което чрез буквите от азбуката и допълнителни символи се представя визуално картина. Работата на тази програма е именно да улесни и автоматизира процеса по превръщането на произволно изображение в текстови формат, с помощта на интуитивна палитра от настройки и инструменти(избор на шрифт и символи, които да се използват, настройка на контраст, превю и т.н.). Настоящата версия 0.9.6 е доста стабилна и се държи чудесно дори при работа с по-големи изображения. Приложението дава възможност да запазите резултата като текстови документ(*.txt) или изображение, като се поддържат и черно-бели и цветни изходни резултати. Урок за използване на програмата е наличен от уебсайта й. Дори ще си направя труда скоро лично да я преведа на български. :)
СЪВЕТ: Ако ще поставяте ASCII art в чат(например в Skype), първо премахнете празният знак от списъка със символи, които ползвате и го заменете с друг(например с "_"), защото чат програмите често пренебрегват празното пространство при поставяне(Paste). За Skype - изберете за шрифт Tahoma Regular с големина 8, защото по принцип точно тези настройки използва Скайп(освен ако не сте ги променили чрез опцията Font до Emoticons в чат прозореца), макар че промяната им се отразява само на вас, а не на потребителят, с когото си чатите.

CamStudio 2 [оценка на редактора-6/6]
И тази програма е с отворен код. Попаднах на нейно ревю при преглед на един много полезен блог. CamStudio служи за направата на видео файл на това, което правите с операционната система и отворени приложения(т.н. Screen Recording Software). Може да се натъкнете на малък проблем при опит да прегледате генерирания .swf файл, но в сайта е описано подробно как бързо да го отстраните, пък и това ще бъде напълно поправено в следващата версия. :) Програмата е много малка(около 1.3MB) и макар да е сравнително елементарна, е и доста мощна - позволява следните функции:

• записване на видео (region, fixed region или full screen)
• записване на аудио (от микрофон или тонколони)
• поставяне на текстови обяснителни бележки/забележки/коментари/анотации - стрелки, балончета, други форми (много полезни при създаването на видео уроци/video tutorials/)
• експорт/конвертиране към Flash (.swf файлове)
• персонализиране на keyboard shortcuts("горещите клавиши за бърз достъп")

Друга безплатна програма от този вид, която горещо препоръчвам е DebugMode's Wink, която е дори още по-мощна и богата на функции.

Synergy [оценка на редактора-5/6]
Поредната убийствена програмка с отворен код. Със Synergy можете да "слеете" при управление на мишката и клавиатурата два десктоп операционни системи и така да влачите курсора от края на екрана на единия монитор в другия! Програмата е изключително полезна при наличие на мултиекранна среда на един компютър или за управление на друг от разстояние. Позволява дори общ clipborard за копиране/поставяне от едната в другата ОС с пълна поддръжка на Unicode! Освен това можете да синхронизирате пускането и изключването на скрийнсейвъри и дори да въвеждате само веднъж парола за влизане в две операционни системи(при подходящи настройки)! И всичко това, благодарение на идеите на The Free Software Foundation и Движението за Свободен софтуер! За в бъдеще програмата ще стане още по-добра, стабилна и безпроблемна, а междувременно сайтът й разполага с достатъчно информация за правилното й конфигуриране и има кого да попитате ако сте в затруднение(но първо потърсете решението в документацията).  :)

I'm happy to give up a follow up on my blog from last month about the Mobile App.

It has now been a bit longer than 1 month that I'm using extensively the mobile apps versions on my iPod Touch, basically since the software came available to download programs, and would like to give a short follow up on it.

I've been trying out loads of free programs, I still didn't buy any, because I want to be sure that it actually helps me, and that my computer doesn't get changed again, so only free for the moment.But even with these free programs I can see already a nice move towards very useful programs to the point that I'm hardly using some websites anymore..

My top 3 programs are:

Number 1: Twitterrific. This program is perfect for me to send of the tweets all the time, while I'm connected to the Internet. Especially at home I'm using it extensively, because at work I've been to busy to even look at my Touch, so haven't been using it there yet as much. But it is definitely a really neat way of staying in contact quick and follow the conversations what is going on on line.

Number 2: Facebook App. Basically I'm coming back to Facebook because of this application. It is perfect not to have any ads on my screen while going quickly to the most important points among my friends. Since the update to version 2 I'm using it now twice a day, at least. To give a compensation, before I downloaded that program I was checking facebook once a week. The Facebook site though I'm not checking anymore.

Number 3: The Wordpress App. Basically now when I'm in the metro I have to time to write a little bit and let my thoughts about things go out and inside this app. Maybe the quality of these thoughts are not really up to the level yet, but hey we're working on it. I'm only beginning.. hahaha.

There are a few apps I started to use optimistic but now have been deleted.. The App wall of shame :)

Number 1 (the worst): Yahoo OneConnect. The idea is brilliant from this program to collect all your data together, but they really need to work on the speed of this one. It takes me 5 minutes to setup a new service while after that it's crashing on me 2 times within 10 minutes. Not good, and I hope they will improve it soon.I'll check back when there's version 2 out, now I've deleted it for the moment.

Number 2: Last.FM program. I started to use it very optimistic but now it's on page 5 of my screen and I don't use it anymore the problem with it is that it's even more difficult to find Artists and than it keeps on crashing as well. If I do something wrong with this program, I'm more than open to hear your advise for it.

Number 3: NY Times App. This one is like the other 2, it has loads of potential but for the moment the implementation is not so good. Waiting times of 2 minutes over a 20 MB connection is not good for a program to get information. Furthermore the numerous crashes are not helping neither to improve the usability.

This is a very short rundown on the top 3 Apps I'm using the most or the least at the moment, next month there will be some new programs in these lists probably because there are a few very interesting apps at the moment on my Touch and will definitely keep on testing them all the time.

A Media Center is pretty much a Media Player, Say, Like Windows Media Player (WMP), or Winamp or iTunes or ... Yeah, you get the Idea now, right?

Anyway, a Media CENTER (Notice the all caps to note change from Player to Center) is pretty much an over glorified Media Player, it just has more built in support for more options.

The Standard Media Center can generally do the following things...

• Play your Videos
• View your Pictures
• Play your Music
• Run in Full Screen

Yup, Simple Idea, huh?  All they they really did was add in a "Sideshow" like type add in for the preexisting Media Player, and then they change the name up.

Ok, with that simple explanation behind me, lets move on..

So Who are the Challengers?

Windows Media Center, Elisa, MediaPortal and xbmc (XBox Media Center).

Ok, just so that everyone knows, here is the testbed PC's stats...

• CUSTOM BUILT MACHINE
• AMD Athlon XP 2.25GHz Processor (Overclocked)
• 2.25 GB DDR Ram
• 1600x1200 Resolution Monitor
• DVD Drive (8x)
• TDK DVD Burner (4x)
• Windows XP Home SP2
• Videos are all DivX Encoded
• Pictures are common formats
• Music is all in .mp3 format

Ok, now that we have the Tech Specs out of the way, here we go...

Challenger 1 : Media Center (Microsoft, Commercial)

Alright, First of all, It should be noted, the only way that you can get the Media Center (Not Media Player) is to buy a Copy of Windows Media Center (Also called MCE), It is just a special version of XP has has the needed software added in, along with more drivers for the now needed hardware.

Pretty much, This is Windows Media Player on steroids.  It is honestly nothing more than a front end shell for Windows Media Player.  That is it.  If you have EVER used ANY of the WMP's since version 6, then you can find you way around.  Yes, they gave it a neat and spiffy front end menu, but really, the only killer feature that there is, IMHO, is the right click and get a menu while the video is playing feature.

Challenger 2: Elisa (free) - http://elisa.fluendo.com

Elisa is a Free, Open Source Media Center.  What that means, for the non-tech heads, it that...

1. It is FREE. You dont have to buy another Version of the OS that you allready have.
2. It is Open Source. This means that if your a geek/nerd/whatever, you can download and build your own version

Obviously, not everyone will be building there own version.  Hell, I am a huge nerd, and I would not even try it.

Ok, So, What does This offer up that Media Center does not?

Well, First of all, It looks like an Apple Product. You know, the overly large icons, the rotating circular menu, trendy black background... Yup. Looks like an Apple app to me. But it is NOT.

Elisa is pretty much an easily configurable app. It runs in Full Screen mode, you can use the Keyboard arrow keys to navigate the menu icons, and the handling is responsive.

The Problem that I had with this is just one tiny small problem...

Elise took FOREVER to see My Videos, and even then play them.

So i go over to the huge, Apple iTunes looking menu, and try to play some of my mp3's.  Nope. Whatever the swirling circle mean, it is taking to long.  I have, at BEST, a 30 second attention span. And this app was killing my time.

Looks like Fluendo has screwed the pooch on this one.  I mean, why have a Media Center, when it has to take 5 minutes to recognize just three (3!) Standard DivX encoded movies?  What. The. Hell?

Total Rating: 2 out of 5 stars.  The Apple like UI is what saved them from getting 0 stars, seriously.

Challenger 3: MediaPortal (Free) - http://www.team-mediaportal.com

Wow, If this thing looked any more like Windows Media Center it would be amazing.  Or a long lost cousin or something.  There are Graphical differences, and this Media Center IS Skin based, so you can change out the way that it looks... but just WOW for the default skin.  Lack of Imagination will kill you in this review, and you have just been shot.

Video Playback is first, and I have to start off with a WTF.  Ok, I tell it where my My Videos folder is at... and it tells me that I have only 1 video.  Ok, now, for this testing, i have 3 videos... so something aint right here.

I try and try and try and try and ...... you get the idea, but it will only see one video. To bad, because i was really digging the Video UI interface, for some reason.

Music playback was good, it took a few seconds for it to start off, and i keep my playlists in the same folder with my mp3's ... and it did not see them.  On top of that, the menu listing only lists up to 30 at a time, so you have "Pages" of music to also flip through.

I guess that the developer had a reason for limiting one "page" to 30 entries, but no one that i know will like having to do extra work for there own music.

Some neat Plug-ins come with the app, my Fave was Weather.  They have games too.....

Ok, now, fact of like, Team-MediaPortal. People are LAZY. Kill to "page" system, and fix the damn Video Recognization Counter. That shit was annoying.

Total Rating: 3 out of 5. Mp3 playback worked, and is skinned.

Challenger 4: xbmc (free) - http://xbmc.org

xbmc (XBox Media Center) was originally made for ... yup. the XBox.  Good Genus.  Well, It has been ported to Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and (gasp!) even the XBox! OMG!

Yeah, this thing is everywhere.  And for a GOOD reason.

The Start off UI is a kinda-sort of XBox "tribute", i guess I can say.  But hey, it works out well.  Configuring the thing takes a bit of tweaking, and in the end, i discovered something useful about the settings.  Don't mess with them.  They work just fine out of the box.

Ok, now, Video Playback. Absolutely Great. It knew the difference between my Wide screen DVD rips and my Full screens, Sound was cool too. Kudos.

Mp3 playback was just as good, AND it saw my preestablished Play lists. OMG. HaveMyBabyPlease....

Not really much of a skinning UI option (errr... Wide screen VS Full screen of the same skin is still, well, the same skin...)  I like that the app has the ability to get my Weather also.

The ONLY drawback is they my mouse tended to "hang" over the main menus, as if the buttons doing there highlighting was draining the system.

Total Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars.

Ok, Well, with me having given each app one full day to see if i could, or even, wanted to come back to it, here is how it plays out.

Elisa is getting uninstalled. Sorry. If i wanted a Mac i would have bought one.

MediaPortal = teh Uninstalled also. To much of a Media Center rip off.

Media Center ... Well, lets just say that i will be using REGULAR XP instead of a Microsoft Customized Version for JUST one app and a few more drivers.

xbmc ... What can i say, I like it. Hell, as stated above, you can even get it for Macintosh, and even for AppleTV!  I know of plenty of people that go out of there way to make there PC look like a mac, but how about turning the AppleTV in to a XBox looking Media Center ... that is just pure genus. :D

So there you go. my Rants and Raves on the four main Media Centers out there.  As always, my ideas and your ideas may not match up, but that is the way that the world works.

The Villain

Not in the case of Web 2.0.

The power that certain tools like wikis, social networking sites, and group presentation software can give to teachers and their students is still unknown. Up until now, applications have already been created for ease-of-use, so some of them might *actually* make your life easier.

Here are some ideas for integrating some specific tools to promote collaboration, and some links to others who have good ideas or have even tried this integration already:

• Using a wiki: this can serve as a good 'homepage' for a course, but it can do so much more, too! I suggest creating assignments that will require students to add and review others' work. The highest level of Bloom's taxonomy is evaluation, and this is a very easy way to hit that mark and get students to think more deeply and broadly about what they're learning.

• Using YouTube: have students post videos - skits, conversations, creative representaions of the material that they're synthesizing, as well as post response videos and comments.

• Using Facebook: go beyond just creating a group for your class if it's available; use a community-building application such as Courses or Schools.

• Yammer is a great tool for keeping members of a smaller group up-to-date on the progress of projects. Students can use this to

Why have you removed the links for all free apps and iPod Touch Apps from iTunes' AppStore (they used to be just above the categories list)?

Yeah, I know many of the free apps were crappy and a lot were 'lite' versions of full software but those links served a purpose for me and now they are gone.  How am I expected to find the new free apps?  The search sucks and I can't reorder the search results by newest to oldest.  Is this a sneaky way to push the paid for apps?  Please don't try to screw me.

C'mon, do what's right and put those convenient links back up there for me.
