<Das Team MILRAM löst infolge des Schiedsspruches des Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) vom Dienstag, 6. Mai 2008, den Vertrag mit Alessandro Petacchi mit sofortiger Wirkung in beiderseitigem Einvernehmen auf.

„Jeder Verstoß gegen die Teamrichtlinien wird geahndet“, so Teammanager Gerry van Gerwen. Aufgrund dieser klaren Richtlinien, in der unter anderem die Konsequenzen bei Missachtungen der UCI-Regularien definiert sind, entschloss sich das Team MILRAM, den Vertrag mit Alessandro Petacchi aufzulösen. Nach Rücksprache mit dem italienischen Radprofi wurde der Entscheidung gemeinsam zugestimmt.

Der Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) befreite Alessandro Petacchi zwar von dem Vorwurf des Betruges und des Missbrauchs des Medikamentes Salbutamol, kam aber zu dem Schluss, dass es zu einer Missachtung der UCI-Regularien, als auch der Sondergenehmigung (ATUE) zur Verwendung von Salbutamol gekommen war.>

Der CAS hat nun beschlossen, Alessandro Petacchi rückwirkend für dem Zeitraum vom 1. November 2007 bis zum 31. August 2008 zu sperren. Außerdem werden alle wettbewerbsfähigen Ergebnisse des Radprofis während des Giro d´Italia 2007 mit allen sich daraus ergebenden Konsequenzen aberkannt. Ebenso werden die Erfolge während der Sperrzeit nicht anerkannt.

Petacchi werden lediglich die zwei Monate Sperrzeit erlassen, die er während der Ermittlungen bereits "abgesessen" hatte.

"Das ist ein so absurdes Urteil, dass wir über eine Klage vor dem schweizerischen Bundesgericht oder vor dem Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte in Straßburg nachdenken", sagte Petacchis Anwältin Maria Laura Guardamagna.

Dem 34-jährigen Radrennfahrer könnte nun die Entlassung aus seinem derzeitigen Rennstall-Team Milram bevorstehen.

"Wir müssen das schriftliche Urteil abwarten und die Rechtslage prüfen. Letztlich liegt dann die Entscheidung beim Sponsor", so der Teamchef Gerry van Gerwen.

Der italienische Radrennfahrer war beim Giro d´Italia im Mai vergangenen Jahres "nicht negativ"auf Salbutamol (Asthma-Medikament) getestet worden. Petacchi besitzt eine Ausnahmegenehmigung, jedoch hatte der festgestellte Wert die erlaubte Grenze von 1000 Nanogramm um 320 pro Milliliter Urin deutlich überschritten. Bei einer hohen Dosierung entfaltet Salbutamol eine anabole Wirkung.

Alessandro Petacchi war damals in erster Instanz beim italienischen Verband freigesprochen worden. Das Italienische Olympische Komitee (CONI) fordert vor dem CAS eine zwölf monatige Sperre. Der 34-jährige Radrennprofi hatte bereits für den Fall einer Verurteilung das Ende seiner Karriere angekündigt.

"My team prepared this victory in perfect fashion," a happy Alessandro Petacchi said. „I want to thank my team mates, who worked very hard today for this success."

"After the first two hapless stages we are very happy to be rewarded with the second victory in a row," MILRAM pro Christian Knees explained. "We were in control of the race for the whole of the stage,and worked together very well in the mass sprint."

At the beginning of the race, a five-man breakaway got away from the field. Team MILRAM and Team Caisse d'Epargne with overall leader Pablo Lastras Garcia controlled the race and closed the gap with 1.5 km to go. In the final sprint, the MILRAM express brought their captain Alessandro Petacchi into position. The Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol's last stage leads from Antequera to Cordoba on Thursday 21. February, with a total length of 154.6 km.

Dortmund, 07 February 2008.  Team MILRAM captain Alessandro Petacchi will open his 2008 season on Saturday, February 9, with the GP Costa degli Etruschi.  With a team aimed at a mass sprint finish, the German ProTour team will look for the Italian sprinter star's fourth consecutive win.

„The first race of the year is always a special one for me,“ MILRAM captain Alessandro Petacchi said.  „The GP Costa degli Etruschi takes place about 100 km from my hometown, so my whole family is there every year.  Of course that gives me extra motivation.  I hope that we can go well-organized into the mass sprint directly at the beginning of the season.  I naturally want to repeat my victory of the last years.“

The GP Costa degli Etruschi takes place this year for the 13th time.  The 193 km course from Donoratico to San Vincenzo runs over two flat round courses in the second half of the race, which traditionally lead to a mass sprint.

Team MILRAM will hold an official press meeting with Alessandro Petacchi at the team hotel on Friday, February 8 at 17:00.

Zoals al aangekondigd in mijn overzicht van dinsdag, is het weer een strijd tussen de sprinters (en hun ploegen) en de avonturiers in de Vuelta. De hoogste bergen hebben de renners achter zich gelaten en de mindere goden van het peloton mogen het weer proberen.

Woensdag was het de beurt aan de Spanjaarden José Antonio López Gil (Andalucia) en Raúl García de Mateos (Relax), twee renners van kleine Spaanse ploegen. Na wat mindere pogingen in de eerste kilometers van deze 11e etappe, sprongen deze rijders na 8 km weg uit het peloton. Tot 7km voor de finish van de 191km lange etappe reden de beide renners vooruit. Hun maximale voorsprong bedroeg na 33km bijna 6 minuten. Maar zoals zo vaak, ook zij moesten het hoofd buigen voor het jagende peloton met de sprintploegen voorop.

De winnaar was uiteindelijk Alessandro Petacchi (Milram), die zijn eerste ritzege boekte in deze Ronde van Spanje. Hij was uiteindelijk te sterk voor Paolo Bettini (QuickStep) en ploeggenoot Erik Zabel, die tweede en derde en derde werden. De bergen van de 3e en 2e categorie waar de renners overheen moesten, was zoals voorspeld niet van doorslaggevende betekenis geweest. De benen van de sprinters hebben er dan ook niet onder geleden.

De Rus Mentsjov behield dan ook de leiding in het algemeen klassement. Hij heeft nog steeds een voorsprong van 2.01 op zijn landgenoot Vladimir Efimkin.

12e etappe

Vandaag is de 12de etappe en ook dit beloofd een duel te worden tussen de sprinters en de avonoturiers. De finish ligt in Albacete en de rijders moeten 176 km verteren, zonder echte beklimming. Het koersboek laat enkele heuveltjes zien, maar er is geen sprake van een berg van de een of andere categorie. De strijd om te puntentrui zal dus naar alle waarschijnlijk zijn vervolg krijgen. De trui is na het vertrek van Freire in handen van Bettini, die een voorsprong heeft op, jawel, Mentsjov van 25 punten. Zabel staat 3de op 1 punt van de Rus en zal er dus alles aan doen om Bettini achter zich te houden. Al zal ook Petacchi zich weer in de strijd willen mengen.

Maar ook de kleine ploegen zullen zich weer willen laten gelden. Alle grote sprinters hebben inmiddels wel zo'n beetje hun etappezege te pakken, dus wie weet. Op dit moment, de renners zijn net halverwege, is er een groepje van 3 man vooruit. De vijf (Gilbert, Krivtsjov, Rebellin, Minard en Ruiz Sanchez) hebben een voorsprong van 3.40 minuten.

Alessandro Petacchi lost his spot on Milram's Tour de France team on Wednesday after being charged with doping by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), according to Agence France Presse.

CONI's anti-doping prosecutor, Ettore Torri, asked the Italian cycling federation (FCI) to ban the 33-year-old sprinter for one year following a "non-negative" doping test after the third of his five stage wins at the Giro d'Italia.

The urine sample Petacchi gave at Pinerolo on May 23 showed an unusually high level of salbutamol, a substance primarily used to treat asthma.

"We signed the ProTour Code of Ethics, and and under the terms of this code, a rider suspected of having recourse to doping cannot be allowed to race," said Gerry van Gerwen, Milram's general manager.

Salbutamol is a banned substance, but riders suffering from asthma are allowed restricted use of the drug if they can provide a medical certificate. Petacchi has such a certificate, having suffered from asthma for many years.

The World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list notes, however, that riders whose urine samples show a concentration of salbutamol greater than 1000 nanograms per milliliter must prove that the elevated level is a result of normal therapeutic use. If a rider with a Therapeutic Use Exemption produces a level lower than 1000 ng/mL the burden of proof falls to anti-doping authorities, if they wish to show a doping violation.

Petacchi produced a level higher than the upper limit and must now show that he did not take the drug orally or inject it and that his use of the inhaler was in keeping with its normal therapeutic use.

Studies have shown that in addition to aiding in the treatment of asthma, salbutamol can be used to increase an athlete's anaerobic power. According to study results, peak power appeared significantly earlier and was noticeably increased after salbutamol use.

The urine sample taken at Pinerolo was the only one of the five doping tests Petacchi gave that showed an excessive amount of salbutamol.

The Italian sprinter will be replaced on Milram's Tour team by Ukrainian Andriy Grivko, according to Agence France Presse. But the rider who will take center stage in Petacchi's absence is Erik Zabel. The 36-year-old German sprinter has won the Tour's green-jersey competition six times and was victorious in 12 stages between 1995 and 2002.

Zabel has himself admitted to doping, saying he took EPO in 1996.
