Interesting is the only word I can use to describe the two movies I recently saw. Across the univers

Interesting is the only word I can use to describe the two movies I recently saw. Across the universe is interesting in it's use of Beatles songs to tell a story. And Hamlet 2 is interesting in that well it's interesting? I guess? I'm not quite sure why I like Hamlet 2 other then the usual F-Off censorship. It's quite original, different and silly.

Across the Universe, is a powerful little movie, that suffers from power outages for most of the movie. With only two songs maybe three that really click, "Let it Be, Revolution, and All You Need is Love" It tells an interesting intertwined story of Jude and Lucy. It has both it's ups (the songs I mentioned) and the downs. Most of those being bad visuals during some of the songs, and the length at 2 hours and 13 minutes. Though I will say I really liked Bono's Cameo. It was in my opinion anyway very well done. I'd give the movie 7 out of 10 for at least trying to do something different, even if it didn't do it very well. Plus there is just something I like about it, but the words escape me, to describe it.

Hamlet 2 is both interesting and insane? I guess would be the best word for it. It is a funny piece that while fighting censorship and oppressive behavior. Falls short of it's goal of supporting the arts. It has it's funny moments, with Elizabeth shue and the rest of the cast. But Catherine Keener and David Arquette characters are more of a hindrance to the movie then a help. Though I guess that was there story line, but most of the scenes with them just felt odd and out of place. But overall it's a good movie, that gave me a couple of laughs, which is what I wanted from it. I'd give it 7 out of 10. Interesting movie, not really for everyone though.

Dr. Binayak Sen, somebody who has done a lot more for the country than most people, is now a victim

Dr. Binayak Sen, somebody who has done a lot more for the country than most people, is now a victim of the ridiculous charade that passes off as justice in India. He has been in prison for over a year now. Read about him over here. If you are moved, you could sign the petition to free him.

Imprisonment of people that speak out against the government is becoming unsettlingly frequent. There was Professor Geelani a few years back, Binayak Sen last year and Ajay TG this year. And these are merely the high profile cases that find their way into the media.

So many of us, the Indian middle class, feel so complacent and secure sitting on our plush couches watching fluffy shows like Big Boss on our flat screen televisions and driving to expensive restaurants in our glittering cars. Once in a while, we see newsreports of bombs and terrorists which disturb us a little. Like frightened children swallowing a fairy story to rationalise surroundings that we don't understand, we accept draconian laws trustingly and have touching faith in the police who we believe will use all this power we give it to shoot all the bad guys and make the roads safe for our new cars.

In the meantime, the people who can see what is really going on and who speak out against it are slowly being erased - the mild form of this removal is that they are ignored and the extreme form of their disappearance is that they are arrested - and we have no idea that this is going on.

Ours is a country where each of us has the freedom of speech and expression, and the right to ask questions when we can see that rule of law is not observed. By ignoring our right and allowing ourselves to be lulled into complacence, we are creating a frightening country for ourselves to live in. And by our indifference we are allowing the few heroes who champion our cause to be annihilated.

This week’s Top 5 Tuesday at Supernanny Where Are You? is all about movie soundtracks - you kn

This week's Top 5 Tuesday at Supernanny Where Are You? is all about movie soundtracks - you know when you are watching a movie thinking, "My gosh this music is incredible?" I know I do this all the time - so here are the 5 movies off the top of my head that have the greatest soundtracks:

Phantom of the Opera - I think the music in this movie is better than the movie itself, at least the recent one by Andrew Lloyd Webber - it's one of mine and dh's favorite movies, and we always end up getting the music stuck in our heads for weeks afterwards...

Garden State - I actually listen to the Garden State soundtrack all the time and love it - it's very indie rock / folky and all the different artists are so good. I think my favorite is probably 'Only Living Boy in New York' by Simon and Garfunkle but the whole thing is excellent.

Juno - The only thing better than the movie Juno, was the soundtrack. I especially love that song, "We sure are cute for two ugly people..." - oh the song is called 'Anyone Else But You' and it's by the Moldy Peaches but I like Ellen Page and Michael Cera singing it even better. And again, I always get that soundtrack stuck in my head.

Chicago - Cell Block Tango, All That Jazz, Razzle Dazzle - the music IS the movie and both are so, so good! A lot like Phantom of the Opera I guess in that it kind of started with the musical and was turned into a movie later so obviously the music is great, but yeah there you go...

Across the Universe - Being born in the 80's, I can say I love the Beatles, but you know I can only love them so much, having never seen them in their hayday, but this movie made the music come alive for me in an awesomely unreal kind of way. And now I love the Beatles in a whole new amazing way. And yeah of course the soundtrack is amazing - how could it not be?

So what are you're Top 5 Movie Soundtracks?

A huge part of my life is dedicated to music and film, partly because of my job, but mostly for myself. Thanks to Netflix, this American is able to drown happily in the world of foreign films. Don't get me wrong, we have good films every few years...the last one may have been The Princess Bride...

I recently saw Les Chansons D'Amour (Translated, Love Songs) and I really enjoyed it. I have always been a fan of musicals, but mostly the classics like Les Parapluies De Cherbourg or Singing In The Rain.

This film was a breath of fresh air after seeing Across The Universe and being forced to listen to the soundtrack almost every day at work. I have loved the Beatles since the age of 5, and the songs never get old to me, unless I listen to the soundtrack. The story was so ridiculous and then Lucy just pissed me off, along with Sadie's version of Helter Skelter. I thought I had lost my ability to love musicals, but oh how I was wrong.

The music is beautifully written so that the lyrics are more similar to a conversation than a song. After I saw it I started playing the DVD during the day just for the music. I only wish I knew more french so I could sing along...

Here is one of my favorites (Couldn't find one with English Subtitles):

It is a Thursday night, I am tired and just in that mood where my thoughts are deep when listening to Rufus Wainwright's remake of the Beatle's Across the Universe is just the right way to pass time. Just one of those nights.

The music video featues an even younger Dakota Fanning. Wow..has it been that long ago. Peace out.

Gene I Want You da (şarkının bir diğer adı da She's so heavy'dir) She's so heavy kısmını yine bayana yönelik düşünürdüm ama filmde buradaki she özgürlük (filmde özgürlük anıtı olarak yansıtılmış ama ben özgürlüğü kastettiklerini düşünüyorum) olarak kullanılmış.

Her kesimin kendini bulması...

Yesterday a substation caught fire which resulted in the power being out for the better part of the

Yesterday a substation caught fire which resulted in the power being out for the better part of the day. It did not go back on until around 8 in the evening. Needless to say, the servers that bring the internet were not rebooted and I will no doubt have to wait until tomorrow to post this. It is Saturday night for the record.

So I write this after going back to a past time that was mine before the internet, blogging and gaming on the PSN. Watching movies. My wife, son and I watched a movie that I had been wanting to see ever since I first saw the previews for it. Our youngest was not in the mood as he wanted to continue and improve on the 31% completion he has with Jak and Daxter on my old PS2. He did come through near the end of the movie as it was getting late and I asked him to save and quit. He went to bed ten minutes later but not until we had a snack.

It was kind of funny because as we were having our snack, our oldest was mentioning how the song we had just heard was stuck in his head. That is pretty cool because I approve of the music and the message that is the music in this movie.

For those of us who are familiar with the songs of the Beatles and the beauty that was their music, I hope you have had a chance to watch "Across The Universe". I won't go into a review of the movie as it has been out for a while now but I do want to talk a bit about what the movie meant to me as I watched it with my son who will be leaving for high school at the same time we welcome our third child.

Next month, September. It is a matter of weeks now. It has always been a matter of weeks as far as the baby goes and as of Wednesday, it will be our 36th week of pregnancy. I am glad that our 13 year old wanted to watch this movie with us and I was privileged to be able to watch this with him and my wife since he will be starting on his own journey around the same time. I want him to be able to talk to us and share his journey with us while he is in high school.

This movie provided an opportunity for us to talk about what used to be as far as civil unrest and and The Vietnam War goes. It was not a deep long drawn out discussion but it was us communicating on a deeper level than the often unidirectional nature of the Parent and Young Child.

I like that sort of discussion. It helps to focus him from his new interest. Girls. =) I don't want him to have tunnel vision when it comes to girls and does know he is leaving us to go to school. He had asked what it was like to be like to be in love already so I know that his interest is more than passing. He is thirteen after all. It was funny because it was still before the summer when he would turn away and be embarrassed about a woman's breasts being shown on TV.

There is a part in this movie where a breast is seen and there was nothing. I looked at him and his mom and nothing, no reaction from either. Our family is growing. From the new baby to the teenage son to us as parents who can talk to our oldest about such things love, war, civil unrest and being grounded in the knowledge that he is a part of a family, a community. But I have digressed into other blog topics so I will bring it back to the movie.

I have to say that when I saw the preview for "Across The Universe" I was expecting to watch a musical. Yes there is singing in this movie but not the kind of singing I saw in other musicals. The singing in this movie had some substance.

Perhaps is because I am nearing my 39th year four days before the due date of my third child. Perhaps it is because I have grown up listening to that music (as my parents played it) and know where it comes from. I didn't think this movie was a musical. It didn't feel like it. It felt like more.

So it's a new day and I'm back at it. I was looking at some of the post from yesterday and decided of something I could do to go along with my Wicked post from last night. I'm going to have a daily post about something to do with musicals and theatre, whether it's talking about a musical, one of my favorite actors/actresses or just a song from a musical. So for this morning I'm starting with Curtis Holbrook:

Curtis is one of my favorite ensemble actors. He's been in a few of my favorite shows including Xanadu, All Shook Up and Taboo. He can take even the smallest role and turn it into something amazing. My first experience with him was in Xanadu as Thalia the muse of comedy and other roles such as one of the Sirens and as the Cyclops. Even though those are not huge roles in the show, he had me captivated by his performance and his distinctive singing voice. He also starred in All Shook Up as Dean Hyde, and in Taboo as a member of the ensemble and played one of the dorm buddies in Across The Universe during the song "With A Little Help From My Friends". On top of all that he's also absolutely adorable lol.

That's all about Curtis for now. I'll be writing more later I'm sure. For now enjoy. :]
