da bin ich mal sehr gespannt. (selbstverständlich ganz dekadent als Hardcover)

San Jose vê os pequenos ajustes na set-list serem perpetuados. Os shows em Los Angeles foram muito bons e as respostas têm sido extremamente positivas. A banda, porém, não é de ficar acomodada. Todos estão muito satisfeitos com os shows, mas a busca pela mais impressionante das performances continua. Para tal fim, Politik deixa o banco de reservas e dá uma boa respirada. Eu mesmo não consigo entender o porquê de fazer um show do Coldplay sem ela. Ao vivo, Politik é simplesmente descomunal e a apresentação de hoje não foi exceção. É muito bom vê-la de volta! Do lugar onde fico durante os shows, parece a primeira performance totalmente sólida. Inevitavelmente, minha reação é amplamente construída de acordo com o bom desempenho ou não da parte técnica -e, hoje à noite, tudo foi sossegado, o que é muito gratificante logo no começo da turnê. Tão logo entramos no carro que nos levará para casa, a banda começa a discutir novas melhorias e refinamentos para nossa trajetória. São apenas alterações sutis, porém, nesse ponto, desenvolvimentos são baseados em pequenas mudanças, mais do que em um grande passo solitário. Mais um show e dois gloriosos dias de folga...

Aterrisamos em Las Vegas e o Tour Manager Franksy encontra o microfone Tannoy no avião para saudar a todos com sua melhor paródia de Elvis. Lá fora, os automóveis que vieram ao nosso encontro multiplicaram-se em uma verdadeira comitiva para acomodar a o seleto grupo de Los Angeles que nos acompanharam para uma festa no sábado. Chris observa que olhá-los na pista de decolagem o faz sentir como o presidente do soft-rock. É quase a chegada perfeita, atrapalhada apenas pelo pequeno detalhe que a escada que trouxeram para o desembarque era do tamanho errado. Todos voltamos para nossos lugares enquanto o homem da escada dá meia volta para procurar algo mais adequado.

Parece que foi um dia exaustivo para o restante da equipe. Quando chegamos, ouvi alguém dizendo "Preciso ir tomar café"; dado que é 5 da tarde, é seguro dizer que o dia foi bem cansativo aqui. Após as dez horas de viagem de San Jose até aqui, o caminhão chegou apenas às 11 horas, o que significa que ele fizeram milagres para conseguir organizar o show em apenas uma pequena fração do tempo que eles geralmente têm. Tiro o chapéu para eles!

Muito embora todos estejam felizes por estarem aqui, um pequeno detalhe está no deixando preocupados. O público de Las Vegas podem ser um pouquinho difícil de se impressionar. Não que eles não tenham muitas opções de entretenimento para uma noite -e, mais do que isso, acho que, por vezes, as pessoas podem ficar meio empolgadas demais. Sejamos realistas,  qualquer cidade que pode comportar hotéis com suas próprias montanhas-russas, próximas a pirâmides, esfinges e navios pirata em tamanho real vai achar algumas luzinhas e uma bandinha um tanto entediantes.

Ou não?

Era de se esperar que achassem! O público enlouqueceu desde o comecinho, tanto que passei boa parte da noite sem os fones de ouvido para que pudesse acompanhar o som da multidão. Ainda estou tentando concluir se, até agora, ninguém cantou Viva La Vida tão alto ou se era eu que não estava ouvindo. Minha pergunta é respondida quando a música termina e a platéia simplesmente continua cantando o refrão com um estrondo e isso é completamente maravilhoso. É o tipo de som parecido com o que um grupo enorme de torcedores de futebol fazem que eu só havia ouvido na América do Sul e em algumas partes da Europa e cá está a banda em uma "cidade difícil de impressionar" fazendo isso sem hesitação! Fatalmente, o entusiasmo do público leva a banda a novas alturas. Não quero passar o restante da turnê escrevendo "foi um show excelente", mas hoje foi realmente memorável, isso tem de ser dito.

Vejo vocês em alguns dias...

2. This goal was set immediately when I first heard of the language and all that it meant. I am now a part of the Esperanto movement and I would encourage you to learn the language, or at least learn of it. Priority: Second. Interest: First. Achievability: First.
3. I suppose this is the ultimate goal for everyone, but it came into light this year especially. I know nobody can truly solve it, but for me, I came close late June (I can tell you about it if you wish) Priority: First. Interest: Third. Achievability: Third.

Since the beginning of the summer (when I started, more or less) I have progressed to leciono ses of the full ten (though I recommend starting here), am currently eating with my nondominant hand, and have written two fairly long pieces on why I exist and how I feel about it.

I would rate my progress at six and one-third out of ten.

Yesterday, we kicked off the 8th Annual CBS-42 KEYE Food & Fund Drive with our friends, Chris with CBS-42 KEYE and Connie with Randalls.

We’ll be on our "tour" of Randalls stores every day of the drive (through Sunday, July 27 ) going live on air mornings, 5 p.m., and 6 p.m.

Friday morning, Fred Cantu and Liz Dannheim will broadcast their morning show live from the Randalls at Research & Braker. Come out and say hi!

Choose how you'd like to participate in this year's drive:

• Go to any area Randalls grocery store. At the register, tear off a $1 or $5 scan coupon and hand it to the cashier. The donation will be added to your final grocery bill.
• Or buy a pre-packaged bag of the Food Bank's most-needed items. Look for bags in the front of each Randalls.
• Or drop off non-perishable food items. Check for specially-marked barrels in each Randalls store.

Of course, the universe is an imperfect place, and six times nine is actually 54. At least in Base Ten. In Base Eleven, 6x9= 4A (where A stands for the digit TEN, since fifty-four is 4 elevens and A=ten ones left over). And in Base Twelve, 6x9=46, since fifty-four is 4 twelves and 6 ones left over. And finally, Lo and Behold, in Base Thirteen, 6x9=42 since fifty-four is 4 thirteens and 2 ones left over.

So maybe the universe isn't such a wacky place after all! Maybe Douglas Adams was secretly suggesting that we should all be using Base Thirteen. Or maybe not: when Douglas Adams was asked about this, he supposedly replied, "I may be a sorry case, but I don't write jokes in Base 13."

^*Seriously. Try typing in "answer to life, the universe, and everything" all lowercase.

2. 각 ActiveX 는 원래 깔렸던 사이트에 한해 (쿠키처럼) 활성화되게 된다.
3. 활성화 될 때 마다 사용자의 확인이 필요하다.

윈도우즈를 잘 모르지만 여기 저기서 줏어들은 지식으로 예측해 보건데, 우선 3) 때문에 ActiveX 가 필요한 사이트는 IE6 SP2 보다도 훨씬 사용하기 골치아파 졌다. 심지어 아직도, 액티브 엑스 경고를 켜 놓은 상태에서는 "다시 고침" 기능 때문에 액티브 엑스를 깔지도 못하고 뺑뺑이 도는 사이트가 있단 말이다.

그리고 의외로 1) 의 심각성을 사람들이 잘 모르는 듯 하다. 현재 인터넷 뱅킹 및 쇼핑몰에서 사용되는 액티브 엑스는 크게 나누어 암호화 플러그인과 키보드 보안 플러그인이 있는데, 암호화 플러그인은 사용자 권한으로 (아마도) 깔릴 거라 생각되지만 키보드 보안 플러그인은 키보드 드라이버 뒤쪽을 후킹하기 때문에 깔릴 리가 없다. 다만 일부 카드라든가 은행 사이트의 경우, 키보드 보안 플러그인을 깔라고 나오긴 하지만, 깔지 않고 그냥 무시해도 동작하는 경우가 있다. 아마 해당 기사에서 한국 마이크로소프트의 담당자가 "간혹 그렇지 않은 경우가 있다" 고 말한 것은, 키보드 보안 액티브 엑스를 반드시 깔아야 동작하는 사이트들을 의미하는 것 같다.

또, (이른바) "전자 정부" 사이트의 경우 프린터 드라이버 뒤쪽을 후킹할 테고, 이 부분도 어드민 권한이 필요할 것이다. 주민등록등본을 신청할 수는 있지만, 프린트 할 수는 없다는 얘기다.

결국 IE8 이 나와도, 변하는 것은 별로 없다. 한국 사용자들은 "인터넷 보안을 위해" 새로 추가된 각종 보안 기능을 끄고 살아야 한다. 어드민 권한 계정으로 지내야 하는 것도 마찬가지다. 사실, 애초에 깔지도 않을 것이다. 대부분의 관공서/기업의 IT  담당자들은 "IE8 설치하지 마라" 는 공문을 직원들에게 하달할 것이다. IE7 때도, 그 전의 IE6 SP2 때도 똑같은 일들이 벌어졌으니까. 혹시 정부가 정신 차리고 액티브 엑스를 뺄 거라 생각한다면, 당신은 너무 순진한 것이다. 한국의 인터넷 보안 액티브 엑스는 훌륭한 하나의 산업 분야가 되어 버렸기 때문에, 거기에 미칠 영향을 생각해서도 함부로 현재의 정책을 바꿀 수는 없다. (나도 오픈웹 투표는 했었지만, 기대는 전혀 안한다)

하지만 아직도 그런 회사에 다니고 있다면, 이 기회에 이직을 고려해 보는게 좋을 것 같긴 하다.

I've listened to the new album many times now and can safely say that I like it.

I was never a big fan of Coldplay but, as I said it in a previous post, I've always respected their role in the music scene : bring the underground forward to the mainstream. They do it again here, by having an album full of rather progressive songs that are somwhat demanding from the audience, especially if you consider how easy to listen their previous albums where.

The gem of the album is a song called 42, which manages, in just about 4 minutes, to be a full-blown progressive song, with 5 major switches of feeling/melody/time. Another highlight would be Yes, that suddenly fades out and back in for a whirlwind of niceness. Other highlights include the groovy, RnB influenced Lost? and Violet Hill, the first single off the album.

I'm glad coldplay saved their carreer and I cannot end this post without clearly giving credit to Brian Eno, whose production work on the album is outstanding and who's influence is felt in every note. He saved coldplay from the abyss they were in after the disastrous X&Y.

Edited to add: those are not my feet. Those are Darren's feet and legs. Mine are somewhat less hairy. When I have razor blades and shaving gel anyways.

(Note: You can only get LASIK if your corneas are thick enough. Like my mother, I have thin corneas so must get PRK instead. Apparently, PRK is more painful. I hope I get some good drugs.)

At any rate, my eyes turning into saucers. I normally beg off because, well, I hate them. I had a headache already, and all that light pouring into my eyes didn't help. I also had a hair appointment that I was supposed to drive to but couldn't because I couldn't focus. So I cancelled my hair appointment and went to London Drugs for some clip on sunshades for my glasses and wandered the mall with sunglasses on. And checked out my pupils - there was barely any iris visible.

I even wore them while sitting in the hair place in the mall because those lights in the hair salons are really bright.

Sunglasses inside the mall. How much cooler can you get than that?

"Du bist ein Affe. Du sollst von Baum zu Baum schwingen und Dich verhalten wie ein Idiot. Du wirst lustig sein und so sollst Du für zwanzig Jahre leben."

Der Affe sprach:
"Gott, zwanzig Jahre als Clown der Welt zu leben, ist zu viel. Bitte gib' mir nicht mehr als zehn Jahre." Und es war so.

Dann erschuf Gott den Mann und sagte zu Ihm:
"Du bist ein Mann, das einzige rationale Lebewesen, das die Erde bewohnen wird. Du wirst Deine Intelligenz nutzen, um dir die anderen Geschöpfe untertan zu machen. Du wirst die Erde beherrschen und für zwanzig Jahre leben!"

Darauf sprach der Mann:
"Gott, Mann zu sein für nur zwanzig Jahre ist nicht genug. Bitte gib mir die zwanzig Jahre, die der Esel ausschlug, die fünfzehn des Hundes und die zehn des Affen."

Und so sorgte Gott dafür, dass der Mann zwanzig Jahre als Mann lebt, dann heiratet und dreißig Jahre als Esel von morgens bis abends arbeitet und schwere Lasten trägt.
Dann wird er Kinder haben und fünfzehn Jahre wie ein Hund leben, das Haus bewachen und das essen, was die Familie übrig lässt.
Dann, im hohen Alter, lebt er zehn Jahre als Affe, verhält sich wie ein Idiot und amüsiert seine Enkelkinder.

Und so ist es bis heute.

To Do

• Shower (believe me, I need a shower)
• Drive to Coquitlam to have a pre-op appointment for laser surgery in which they will probably make my pupils huge and with my luck I'll get pulled over on the way back and the cop will think that I'm all strung out or have a head injury (note to self: digress later and tell the story of the girl who got whacked on the head with a softball last night)
• Drive to Maple Ridge and get a haircut (in which they will wash my hair. again)
• Drive home to feed and water cat and grab 3 bottles of wine and a bucket of cherries (note to self: digress later about the cherries)
• Drive to the butcher in Pitt Meadows to get some steaks.
• Drive to New West to watch Darren umping the softball tournament.
• Drive to Surrey (somewhere) to team bbq.
• Drive home and die.

Well, that's sort of dull. How about some stories about my lady bits?

The Diva Cup. LURVE. I finally got one and seriously it is the BEST THING EVAR. Quite possibly, the most interesting thing is its graduated so you can see exactly how much of your innards are coming out.

The Digression about the Girl who Got Whacked In the Head with a Softball

I was sitting at Darren's softball game last night, minding my own business and keeping score (sort of - I doubt how accurate it was but it didn't matter because it was LOTSANDLOTS to FOUR. For the other team). And then I heard a sound: the sound of a head hitting something. I swallow my nausea and look up and the other team's firstbaseperson drop.

And wow - the instinct. Seriously, I was like one of Pavlov's Dogs. I zipped over, cleared her teammates, got one to hold her head still, another one called 911, calmed her down, checked her for neck injuries, oohed and aahed over the goose egg on her forehead, got her up, talked to 911, then waited for the firemen.

And got many handshakes and hugs from her teammates.

And I got to see firemen.

Although I haven't been on deck lifeguarding in a few years - that sound, the one of a head hitting something firm still gets me. Although, its nice to know the training sticks.

The Digression About the Cherries

This will have to come later. I have to leave soon and still have to shower.

So here goes

This first shot was taken from an Amtrak train window as I was speeding south to North Carolina from Union Station in Washington DC.

I love the sense of speed, movement and the bedazzlement of the sun in this picture. It makes me feel like I am a child again on the merry-go-round spinning as fast as I can.

This next picture is from further down the line on the trip.

This shot was taken along the Potomac River. 

 This next picture is the silly one. I saw this notice on the terracotta painted walls at the Phillips Gallery in DC.  I think I loved it becuase of the blue one orange background it really jumps out at you.

The final picture was taken on 14th Street NW in Washington DC right outside of Plan B Art Gallery.  I believe it was some type of asphalt paving equipment, but I loved how worn and colorful it was.

There are times I am tempted to go out and buy a really good camera since I love to take photographs and I believe I have a good compositional eye (except I should crop the last photo a  bit.

So, first things first, the password for the post below can be acquired in two ways.

Now that the administrative stuff is out of the way, I really have nothing to say because all I've been doing is (a) working (b) WORKING and (c) working. And drinking some wine.

We made it to the driving range a couple of times and it is abundantly clear I haven't been out in almost TWO YEARS because the driving range is just not fun. Apparently, Wii golf doesn't count when it comes to playing real golf.

The first time we went out, my sides hurt for awhile. Then I spent about 8 hours over the course of two days working on other people's swimming strokes (have not done this in YEARS). And then I had to go to work and try to maintain some semblance of normalcy in my private life.

Thank god the cleaning service came at some point in there. Really, I don't know what I'd do without them.

And then the thing in the password protected post happened and weirded me out.

So I have a month off working weekends. Not that it matters because next weekend I have an optometrist appointment, then have to stop wearing my contacts and on the 31st I go under the laser. Am quite excited about this: not only do I get my vision corrected, but my mommy is coming to take care of me and cook. Daddy is coming too. Maybe I can guilt him into kindly ask him to be removing the laminate from the laundry room for me because its pretty nasty?

So yes, a rather abrupt end, but I have to go get ready for the thing in the password protected post.
