<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="r">Those of you who had a chance to play with <a href="http://www.fryrender.com/">Fryrender</a>, <a href="http://www.maxwellrender.com/">Maxwell</a> or <a href="http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/">Indigo</a> probably used or at least heard about their ability to simulate lens aberration. Although these implementations may differ slightly they're all based on the same algorithm made by a bunch of guys working hard at University of Tokyo back in 2004 (<a href="http://www.hc.ic.i.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~kaki/paper/PG2004/Kakimoto2004GlarePresen.pdf">more info</a>).</p>
<p class="r">This algorithm can simulate a glare effect that is caused by tiny imperfections on a lens. Besides this, it can imitate a situation when the lens (or iris) is partially occluded. For example by cross filter or eyelashes.</p>
<p class="r">Basically, you bring two maps, one for obstacles and one for aperture, set the multiplier, the amount of diffraction, and the algorithm will do the rest. The whole generation process is physically based.</p>

<p class="r">It's quite fast too, but the best thing about it is that you are able to fully customize the power and the shape of diffraction patterns by experimenting with your own aperture and obstacles maps, on the fly.</p>
<p class="r">Fryrender comes with few nice maps, but I did some additional stuff to make this feature more flexible. You can download them <a href="http://pawelfilip.googlepages.com/glare_maps.7z"><strong>here</strong></a>. They should be compatible with Maxwell SimuLens<span class="l">™ and Indigo Render as well.</span></p>
<p class="r">I also did a small preview scene to show you guys some interesting combinations of aperture and obstacle maps.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A Microsoft desenvolveu recentemente um aplicativo de imagens 3D chamado <a href="http://photosynth.net/">Photosynth</a> . Ele <strong>permite criar imagens panorâmicas</strong> com uma média de 20 a 300 fotos de uma paisagem ou um objeto. Um exemplo pode ser visto <a href="http://photosynth.net/">aqui</a>, no site do aplicativo.</p>

<p>É mais uma ferramenta muito bem feita pela Microsoft, embora eu não esteja conseguindo utilizá-la devido "aos muitos synthings que estão ocorrendo". Vou tentar mais tarde. O <a href="http://photosynth.net/">Photosynth</a> é uma tentativa da Microsoft de interligar o remoto com o online, com o objetivo de colocar a maior parte do computador na internet; ela já anunciou que pretende lançar novas versões de aplicativos clássicos, como o Movie Maker, em versões online interligadas com o desktop.</p>
<p>O <a href="http://photosynth.net/">Photosynth </a>funciona assim, pois <strong>a maior parte das ações ocorrem online</strong>; no desktop, basta fazer o upload das imagens pelo programa [somente disponível para Windows XP e Vista]. No entanto, <strong>a Microsoft oferece 20GB gratuitos online para amrmazenar as criações</strong>. Para usar a ferramenta você deve ter uma Windows Live ID e baixar o aplicativo, que pode ser encontrado <a href="http://superdownloads.uol.com.br/download/5/photosynth/">aqui</a>.</p>

<p>Realidadetotal "Emily" é a nova personagem para o foto realismo para video game e filmes, diz o criador dela, Image Metrics. Metodos já utilizados anteriormente para animação de faces é colocado pontos em uma face humana e observar o jeito que esses pontos se mexem, mas a Image Metrics analisa movimentos faciais em um nivel por pixel individual no video, até mesmo as subvariações minimas, assim mesmo como a pele se comporta ao redor do olho pode ser analisada.</p>
<p>Achei o movimento da boca ainda um pouco artificial porem muito avançado do que conhecemos como nossa "Eve" que apareceu a um tempo no fantastico.</p>

<p>Microsoft Photosynth bietet weit mehr als Schnappschüsse oder kurze Videos. Mit dem neuen Service von Microsoft Live Labs lassen sich 360-Grad-Ansichten des Urlaubsortes oder dreidimensionale Darstellungen einer Sehenswürdigkeit im Handumdrehen erzeugen. Dazu reichen die Fotos einer Digitalkamera und das gratis unter <strong><a href="http://www.photosynth.com" target="_blank">www.photosynth.com</a></strong> erhältliche Tool. Beim zusammengesetzten Bild, dem "Synth", kann der Betrachter sich virtuell nach oben oder unten sowie nach links oder rechts bewegen, Details vergrößern oder sich übersichtlich die Gesamtansicht anzeigen lassen. Das Synth lässt sich auch mit Freunden und Bekannten austauschen. Sie können sich dann so fühlen, als ob sie selbst vor Ort sind.</p>
<p>Photosynth analysiert jedes Foto auf Ähnlichkeiten mit anderen. So ermittelt es, wo das Bild aufgenommen wurde. Anschließend stellt es die Umgebung weitgehend automatisch wieder her und nutzt diese als Basis für die Anzeige der Fotos. Das Verfahren lässt sich für verschiedene Anwendungen nutzen, von der umfassenden Darstellung eines Hauses oder der Wohnung bis zur Untermalung von Geschichten und Familienfeiern.</p>
<p>Nutzung von Photosynth</p>
<p>Zur Darstellung eines Objekts oder eines Ereignisses sind zwischen 20 und 300 Fotos nötig, je nach Anforderung. Dabei müssen sich die Aufnahmen jeweils überschneiden. Zur Erstellung eines Synths klickt der Anwender auf der Photosynth-Website auf "Erzeugen", wählt die zu verwendenden Fotos aus und vergibt einen Namen für die Datei. Nach dem Klick auf "Synth" setzt die Software automatisch das Bild zusammen und lädt es auf die Website hoch. Das fertiggestellte 3D-Bild lässt sich anschließend auf jedem Windows XP- oder Windows Vista-PC mit Breitbandverbindung betrachten. Falls der Nutzer die Synths anderer Anwender kommentieren will, oder eigene erzeugen möchte, benötigt er eine kostenlose Windows Live ID. Die Synths lassen sich auch in Webseiten, Blogs oder sozialen Netzwerken wie MySpace, Windows Live Spaces sowie praktisch jeder beliebigen HTML-basierten Website einbinden.</p>
<p>Aktion NRW in 3D</p>
<p>Der WDR zeigt in seinem Internetangebot unter <strong><a href="http://www.nrw3d.wdr.de" target="_blank">www.nrw3d.wdr.de</a></strong> schon zum Start des Photosynth-Portals eine Auswahl fertiger Synths aus Nordrhein-Westfalen. Dazu gehören unter anderem das Hermannsdenkmal im Teutoburger Wald, die Gehry-Bauten in Düsseldorf, die Kraftwerksbaustelle Grevenbroich und ein Stadtpanorama von Köln. Es handelt sich um ein medienübergreifendes Projekt, bei dem der WDR gemeinsam mit seinen Hörern und Zuschauern die schönsten Sehenswürdigkeiten sucht und per Synth präsentiert. Als erstes soll aus eingesendeten Fotos ein Synth des Kölner Doms entstehen.</p>

<p>Photosynth wird demnächst Bestandteil des Angebots von MSN sein. Dabei erscheinen auf den MSN-Seiten Synths, die bekannte Orte oder wichtige Events zeigen. Bislang wird dies über statische Bilder realisiert. <p style="text-align:justify;">Como todos devem saber, a tecnologia nunca pára de avançar. Em alguns segmentos ela se dá de forma  bastante rápida, caso dos <em>games</em> e das placas de video dos computadores, por exemplo. Outros avanços tecnológicos demoram décadas, como no cinema, que demorou vários anos para evoluir das projeções em preto e branco, sem som e com poucos <em>frames </em>por segundo, para o padrão comum atual. Nos anos 90, a tecnologia nos deu a possibilidade de sentar em poltronas confortáveis e assistir a filmes (com utilização de óculos pra lá de simples e poucos confortáveis) que nos davam a sensação de ver imagens em três dimenções. Apesar da moda do cinema 3D não ter se popularizado, o Brasil, em 2006 (mais especificamente em São Paulo), e os Estados Unidos, anguns anos antes, inaugurou suas primeiras salas de cinema em três dimensões porém, dessa vez, utilizando óculos com tecnologia mais avançada que os velhos óculos com lentes bi-colores.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Historicamente, as projeções de cinema se tornaram populares antes mesmo dos primeiros televidores aparecerem no mercado. Até poucos anos atrás, tinha-se a impressão que as TVs estavam sempre um passo atrás do cinema em se tratando de qualidade de entretenimento. Mas, com o aparecimento recente dos Home Theaters, DVDs e a vinda da DHTV (TV Digital), "o jogo" praticamente se igualou. Hoje tem-se o mesmo, ou até mais, conforto em assistir os filmes em casa. Porém, uma empresa espanhola de telefonia, juntamente com a Philips, resolveu virar o jogo de vez a favor das TVs e testará no Basil (possivelmente antes mesmo da sua terra natal) a TV em três dimensões sem a utilização de óculos especiais.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Segue abaixo a reportagem do jornal O Estado de São Paulo.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Telefônica testa TV em três dimensões</em></p>
<p><em>A Telefônica planeja testar em São Paulo, ainda este ano, um sistema de TV<br />
em três dimensões (3D), que não precisa de óculos especiais. "Com sorte,<br />
começaremos os testes no Brasil antes da Espanha", disse Raúl Ortega del<br />
Río, diretor da Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo, empresa de pesquisa<br />
da operadora. Em parceria com a TVA, de quem é acionista, a operadora vai<br />
oferecer o serviço via IPTV (vídeo via internet direto no televisor) para<br />
os clientes da região dos Jardins, em São Paulo, que possuem conexão de<br />
fibras ópticas. Na Espanha, onde também haverá um piloto, o IPTV da<br />
empresa se chama Imagenio.</em></p>
<p><em>A Telefônica demonstrou a TV 3D durante o evento ABTA 2008, em São Paulo,<br />
com um aparelho da Philips. Para assistir os programas tridimensionais, o<br />
espectador precisa de um televisor especial. O modelo de 42" da Philips<br />
sai por 18 mil no Brasil, incluindo impostos e frete. "Hoje, a tecnologia<br />
é mais voltada para aplicações corporativas" , disse Renato Secco, gerente<br />
da Philips. "Em três ou quatro anos, deve se tornar mais acessível ao<br />
consumidor."</em></p>
<p><em>Apesar de o aparelho estar disponível comercialmente há pouco mais de um<br />
ano, ainda não existe no mundo serviço de TV em três dimensões voltado ao<br />
cliente residencial. A Deutsche Telekom fez demonstrações em Hannover, na<br />
Alemanha, no ano passado. A Philips aposta, por enquanto, no uso do<br />
televisor 3D para exibir propaganda em lugares públicos, como shopping<br />
centers e hotéis, e em aplicações para setores como educação e<br />
farmacêutico.</em></p>
<p><em>O aparelho acaba com a necessidade dos velhos óculos de lentes verde e<br />
vermelha. A tela projeta imagens um pouco diferentes para o olho esquerdo<br />
e o olho direito, para criar a ilusão da tridimensionalidade . A TV usa<br />
pequenas lentes sobre os pontos vermelhos, verdes ou azuis, que formam a<br />
imagem. Essas lentes fazem com que sejam mostradas imagens tridimensionais<br />
para nove ângulos diferentes de visão. Quando o espectador fica entre dois<br />
ângulos, ele acaba vendo imagens duplicadas, como os "fantasmas" que<br />
aparecem na televisão analógica. Resolver o problema é fácil: é só se<br />
mover um pouco para o lado, para receber as imagens certas para o efeito<br />
3D.</em></p>
<p><em>A tecnologia funciona com filmes produzidos em 3D e jogos de computador.<br />
Os vídeos bidimensionais podem ser adaptados com um sistema chamado<br />
Bluebox. A Philips tem televisores 3D de 20 e 42 polegadas, além de um<br />
telão de 132 polegadas. Até o fim do ano, serão lançados mais dois<br />
modelos: de 22 e 52 polegadas. Não existe padrão de mercado para a TV 3D.<br />
Ou seja, um serviço que tem como base o televisor da Philips não<br />
funcionaria com equipamentos de outros fabricantes.</em></p>
<p><em>O conteúdo 3D se tornou uma grande aposta da indústria. Segundo a rede de<br />
cinemas Cinemark, os filmes em 3D permanecem mais tempo em cartaz. Neste<br />
ano, foram exibidos três títulos em 3D - A Lenda de Beowulf, Hannah<br />
Montana e Viagem ao Centro da Terra - e mais dois devem entrar em cartaz.<br />
Para 2009, estão previstos nove títulos.</em></p>
<p><em>A televisão 3D serve de argumento para a TVA e a Telefônica de que a<br />
entrada das concessionárias locais no mercado de TV por assinatura traz<br />
inovações e serviços diferenciados para os usuários, na briga com a Net e<br />
a Embratel. "A Telefônica e seus parceiros já têm mais de 600 mil clientes<br />
de TV por assinatura", disse Leila Loria, diretora-geral da TVA. A<br />
Telefônica planeja investir R$ 123 milhões este ano para ampliar sua rede<br />
de fibras ópticas e atender clientes residenciais em bairros de São Paulo<br />
e no interior.</em></p></blockquote>

<p>Actualmente Mozilla Firefox (FF) ha conseguido un avance considerable sobre Internet Explorer (IE), principalmente porque es personalizable y capaz de ser equipado con mas de 5580 addons que estan disponibles de forma <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/">gratuita</a>. El grado de expanción de FF lo ha llevado a organizar <a href="http://entregeeks.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/record-guinness-oficial-para-firefox/">eventos </a>masivos para crear la cultura de usar FF como alternativa eficaz en navegadores de internet. Pero ahora quiere ir mas halla y estar en las entrañas de IE, desarrollando plugins para este navegador de Microsoft.</p>
<p>Situación Actual. IE no tiene la capacidad de procesar gráficos <em>Canvas</em> inicialmente implementados por Apple en su navegador Safari. Canvas es un  conjunto de herramientas que permiten crear regiones html para generar gráficos dinámicos editables a traves de javascript, el uso de Canvas esta enfocado a crear animaciones, juegos, etc. La tendencia en desarrollo de aplicaciones con alto contenido gráficos es cada vez mas frecuente, podemos encontrar buenas aplicaciones como Google Maps haciendo uso de esta tecnología. Sin embargo, Microsoft se ha resistido a convertir a IE en un navegador moderno.</p>
<p>Propuesta FF. Este ambiente ha generado la inquietud de los desarolladores de FF por implementar el actual motor Javascript en IE para que este último pueda procesar etiquetas Canvas. Se planea que la forma de distribuir este plugin sea a traves de los ya conocidos parches de actualización de IE, sin embargo, este plugin seguramente no sera un parche aprovado por Microsoft por lo que generaría cierta indiferencia por la comunidad que usa IE. Es en este momento en que aparece en escena Adobe, compañía con las mas poderosas herramientas en el mundo multimedia para web, y buen amigo de FF (son amigos desde la secundaria :D ). La alternativa para distribuir el motor Javascript de FF hacia IE sería utilizando  el Flash plugin de Adobe, dicho motor vendría inscrustado en este plugin que es una necesidad básica para cualquier usuario que decee tener una experiencia interactiva con videos, gráficos, animaciones, como lo es Youtube.</p>
<p>Aunque esto pareciera que los desarrolladores FF desean revivir y potencializar a IE, creo que en realidad quieren comercelo, como pasa en la pelicula de "Aliens", donde este ser extraterrestre deposita alguno de sus huevos en el cuerpo de un ser humano para ser encuvado, que posteriormente termina por aniquilarlo. Esperemos ver la reacción de Microsoft ante esta propuesta.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Making sense of 3D Flash interfaces]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You must have seen the 3D web and software design trend, starting with Apple's 3D-esque interface designs of recent years, and lately boosted by the impressive <a href="http://blog.papervision3d.org/">PaperVision 3D</a> for Flash.  They make for beautiful, layered experiences and the sense of depth is intuitively pleasing. However, it doesn't take much to turn a trend like this into a for-the-sake-of-it gimmick. </p>
<p>The key to using 3D well is to think about the psychological value of 3D to a user, and not just turning things into 3D willy nilly.  People have portions of their brains that are dedicated to processing 3D visual scenes, and tapping into that is a powerful way to communicate things that have been tricky with 2D design:</p>
<p><strong>Movement patterns</strong> provide a major cue in 3D - when objects move in unison (eg, rotating in a circle) there's evidently a relationship between them.  The path in space taken by the objects give up clues to whether there's a finite set and how fast you are moving through them. Apple's 'coverflow'  carousel is a prominent example of using movement in space but the approach could be applied in many different ways.  </p>
<p><strong>Sense of place</strong> is communicated on multiple levels - 2D experience design relies on esoteric navigation constructs such as tabs and breadcrumbs to show people where they are in the overall structure of content.  Although many are now common across hundreds of websites, they take some learning and are often unintuitive.  In contrast, when you're looking at a 3D scene with objects located in relative space the structure is immediately evident and familiar.  </p>
<p><strong>Proximity = relevance</strong> - when you have many spatial constructs, the ones in close proximity are the ones that you assume are relevant to the matter at hand.  In a 2D space, this type of approach becomes a difficult task of managing clutter. Using size, location and perspective in 3D space is powerful for showing relevance, not just because of the extra dimensions but also because our brains are designed to process things that way.</p>
<p><strong>Real world rules app</strong><strong>ly</strong> - unlike unique constructs built for UIs, the rules of 3D are the rules of the real world, so it's easy to know whether you are breaking the rules based on what would make sense in the world: Objects shouldn't appear out of nowhere, things should move predictably and with a sense of weight/mass, and so on.</p>
<p><strong>Bonus: Lessons from 3D games</strong> have been learnt over years of experimentation and evolution that can now be leveraged in UI design. Video games have been building complex 3D interactive experiences for years and UI designers can actually claim some reference value from those hours of playing!</p>

<p><strong>Crazy Rambling #1: Sea Urchin Intelligence<br />

<p>So you might not remember this, but I do. When I stepped down on a sea urchin (<a href="http://stuntrabbit.wordpress.com/2008/07/08/days-46-52-island-melee/"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>45 days ago in St. Croix</strong></span></a>), I collected about ten small-to-medium spines in my foot, as well as two big thick ones. One of those, right in the middle of the heel, is still there.</p>

<p>I can still see it (I'll spare you the photo), and some days while walking with my muse I have to stop and say "Hang on a sec love, my urchin's hurting," and she understands, and I love her.</p>
<p>This isn't a complaint; it's some background info for something that would otherwise sound too random. Specifically, this:</p>

<p>No, not the spine. That would be silly.<br />

<p>It's not speech really, more of a thought-directing thing, but it's got me realizing some things about urchins I hadn't considered before.</p>
<p>As you can see <a href="http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artoct02/rhbroken.html"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>here</strong></span></a>, urchins are complex and beautiful. They're also all about <a href="http://virtualurchin.stanford.edu/anatomy.htm"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>sex and food, with no brain</strong></span></a> to speak of. So we understand each other pretty well.</p>

<p>We'll borrow some well-known ideas from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatland"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Flatland</strong></span></a> (by Edwin A. Abbott in 1884) and from Richard Feynman (<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=jL9reHGIcMgC&#38;pg=PA100&#38;lpg=PA100&#38;dq=feynman+smart+bugs+lecture&#38;source=web&#38;ots=_mrKaJPi8W&#38;sig=VKPqwfTU-uPphi7M9REZZEK8FBU&#38;hl=en&#38;sa=X&#38;oi=book_result&#38;resnum=1&#38;ct=result#PPA100,M1"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Gravitation lecture</strong></span></a>, "smart bugs on a hot plate").</p>
<p>Imagine a two-dimensional guy in a two-dimensional world. Flat-guy isn't just very flat, but perfectly flat. He can't see outside the 2D world, can't leave it, and can't even picture what a third dimension would be like.</p>

<p>He lives in a flat. He enjoys flat coffee, rides a flat bus, and uses a flat ATM to get flat money.</p>
<p>Now imagine his flat world happens to intersect a three-dimensional sea urchin. He can't imagine a 3D urchin at all, but in the places where the spines pierce his happy flat-world, our flat-guy sees a bunch of round spiky purple critters.</p>

Or if he doesn't see them, he might step on them by accident. Oh, what a dumb little flat-guy.</em></p>
<p>He's seeing a 2D projection of a 3D creature, and what he sees still isn't too far from what we see.</p>
<p>BUT, what looks to him like a whole bunch of urchins is really just some very small parts of a single urchin. If he dissects them, he won't find a brain, because it's not there. He'll conclude that they're not intelligent. So sad.</p>
<p>SO... back in the three-dimensional world, where does that leave us? Anywhere we find a sea urchin, you'll usually find a whole bunch of them.</p>

<p>Maybe we're just seeing a 3D projection of a 4D (or 6D) creature. Maybe they're all parts of the same creature, and maybe the most important parts are beyond our view.</p>
<p>SO... if sea urchins are intelligent multidimensional critters, then could a guy with a large painful sea urchin spike in his foot (just anyone, really) learn to cross over into other dimensions? I'll try.</p>
<p>If it works, I have promised my muse I won't wear the Captain Goldfish hat while traveling interdimensionally.</p>

<p><strong> BlenMaJu </strong>is my first serious fully rigged character , currently in progress. It already modeled, shaded , unwrapped , and main of body rigging is done. There's some problems especially in IK/FK switch and stretchiness on legs and arms, and facial rigging is in progress.</p>
<p>I think it will be available on Sunday or Monday, and for sure I'll share it to YOU. I'm also decided to write some tutorials on creating the BlenMaju especially on rigging it.</p>
